Resting here on a cold, dark afternoon overlooking the highway below, I think back to the funeral and the professor’s comments. Was Michael’s death really an accident or was it something else. I knew that Michael’s life was not easy. When I met him our first year in college, he was clearly bothered by something. While he often exuded happiness and joy, his demeanor always was overshadowed by a darkness like the one surrounding me. I remember the day when the professor asked Michael to describe his fondest memory growing up. Michael paused a minute and replied “Why the hell should I tell you that, it has nothing to do with English Lit”; then he got up and walked out. Later that afternoon we were working as partners in biology lab when Michael began to cuss quietly under his breath. “What’s the matter”, I asked. He simply stared at me and said, “Forget about me and turn your mind back to the experiment”. We seldom saw each other after the first semester. Three years after graduation, I was in graduate school studying ecology and evolution when my professor asked me to present my research at an upcoming professional meeting. On the day of the meeting, I stepped up to the podium to begin my presentation, glancing down at the audience, I saw Michael smiling up at me. He asked me to dinner that evening and our conversation turned to what we had done since graduation. Michael was in a similar graduate program, and it was clear we had much in common. Over the next two years, we stayed in contact, occasionally seeing each other for an evening. But, as we grew ever closer there was always that memory of the cold darkness, of English Lit, and trouble in Michael’s life.

I like that mystery you created around Michael, and how it was built from that moment in English class. It's such a small moment, but it says so much. Great story.
