The poem is about the people of Ethiopia, who by nature are considered as children of one mother- Ethiopia and they have enjoyed different parts of the country, but recently, they started fighting against each other. The poet therefore reminds them of their brotherhood and they should not fight and kill each other.

Ethiopia weeps for its Children

On the banks of the Blue Nile, the pride of Amhara

The great snake that drinks from Lake Tana, a fish habitat

There sits mother earth as she watches sun setting

Above rugged Western Highlands of her home Etiyopia

inidemini imeshehi, lijoch? she waves her drained palm

With tears undulating from her frowned light skinned cheeks

Sorrows fill her heart and her tears flow like Awash River

Crying for her children Tigray, Oromo, Amhara, Somali, Anyuaks

And all her 80 children in highlands and lowlands of Habesha

I breastfed you with great rivers and lakes of my belly Ethiopia

And fed you raw meet with enjera and drunk my favorite coffee

From Lake Hashenge I quenched your thirst my son Tigre

At Lake Ziway and Lake Afrera I bathed you Oromo and Afar

My son Amhara I made you great at mount Ras Dejen

Gambella my son, I fed you with Maize and sorghum crops

From the dynasty of Solomon to Queen Sheba to Haile sellassie

You have been singing and dancing the rhythm of folk music together

But now you have opted to kill each other spilling blood

Why have you decided to break my heart and quicken my death?

Why have you decided to turn against each other, she laments

Children are limbless and women are raped, my sons are butchered

The evil appetite of murder has quenched your humanity and love

From Tigray to Amhara, Afar and Oromo you drum drums of war

My children from the troubled Gambella are stamping their feet

And Adis Abeba my womb is spitting fire killing my children

When will you stop being belligerent and hug each other again

Your beautiful faces are not food for scavengers and beasts

Neither are my daughters children of the harlot of Sodom

Look, you are from same womb and suckled same breasts

Drop your pride; leave the evil ways for you are one in oneness

Giving my little girls guns to fight and my sons machete to kill

Will not make you victorious and powerful over the others

For heroism and strength are from peace, victory is from silence

Beautiful, and so heartbreaking.
Well written. I could feel so much pain. I loved the imagery.
