The breath of the avalanche lilies floated through the moist chilly breeze causing Alison to pause, then shiver.  She sat on a rock and hugged the blue shawl that Garth had given her on one of their walks. This trail was his favorite; it captured a moment that caused the words to spill out of his heart.  She remembered he’d said it was an “unvarnished” folk song. Truth, natural, genuine, heartfelt. She unfolded the napkin and read “Sweet Alison’s Hug”:

“I’ve seen clouds given rest on an open meadow,

I’ve seen a gentle snow bless a field with its kiss

I’ve felt a warm rain that perked up a fading flower

But sweet Alison’s hug gave me more than just this.

“Like leaves in autumn, I turn shades of every color

When I think of how our two hearts were pressed

It was only for a moment, but I searched for nothing more

For sweet Alison’s hug defined being blessed.

She reread the last phrase,  . . . Yes, the damnable virus came without warning, shocked them both and turned the landscape into a blur.  Would this be his last note to her?  Her blank expression sought the horizon.  The scent of the lilies made her queasy.  She read the ending:  “She can melt an ancient stone, and shake the wounded out of lethargy.  Alison’s hug can heal an aching heart.”  She wondered . . .

How sadly beautiful. I really liked the song in the middle. Your story really showed their deep love for each other and it really made her sadness be felt.
