There's two worlds here - The Bush, and everything else.

The smell of the bush always felt like home to me. Since I was a youngin, sweet tawhairauriki, manuka, ponga and earth mingled into a smell that made me feel like I was sitting in the house of an old friend. Sounds and scents in the bush were as much home to me as my own cot. Even combined with the musty sweetness of a boar on my back.

The smell of the waiting room at the doctors on the other hand is like visiting a wealthy feller in the city – nothing looks used and you wonder if it’s bought new every day. You’re too bloody scared to drink your tea in case you spill it.

The girl in the picture in the magazine I’d opened looked as though she could use a few more layers of that thermal underwear she was meant to be advertising. It rubbed me up the wrong way somehow. It felt about as comfortable as she looked sitting on that rock. Imposter.

I’d put the thing down just in time for the man next to me to hack a couple of times before leaning in and introducing himself, “Ralph,” he said holding out his hand.

“Gidday – Bradly,” I replied shaking it.

“Waddaya in for?”

“Did a number on my leg ‘bout a week ago in Lees Valley. Got out OK but it hasn’t been right since. You?”

“Got this cough I can’t seem to shake.”

I hadn’t been sick for ages. Bugs seem to leave you alone in the bush – not enough people to harass.

I decided to give the magazine another go and opened it at random. Same page.

Reckon my leg will heal alright on its own - rather go for a walk.
