A SOLDIER DIES

By Al Garcia

Lost among the shattered dreams of days not lived and seasons never seen.  I feel the lightness of being, and hear the silence of nothingness echoing in the emptiness of me.

The clarity of the darkness, and the cold and piercing wind flows through every pore of me.  I can feel the tangled vines of time begin to wrap themselves around my collapsed and buckled form.  My strength ever ebbing with the fading midnight light.  How strange to understand, yet not accept, the fleeting moment before the end of time.

The shadows turn to darkness, and the darkness into light so bright, it blinds the mind and shades the pain that burns inside.

Reflections of being born again.  The pain, the light, the sounds that surround and astound the grasping mind and fading heart, too swift to comprehend, too quick to take my breath away.  And then the nothingness of having been.

How cruel to have given me dreams of what would never be.  How brutal and how callous to have made me but a memory, before I had time to feel the life in me, and share the magic that was me.

A soldier dies.  And a dream becomes a shadow without reflection or expression.  Just a lost memory in a sea of tears, a million miles from nowhere.
