Just thought I'd cross-post a short, fluffy, romantic oneshot that I published on another website. A boy and a girl at a picnic at the park.

Little Critter

"I don't get it!" he said. "It's taking the seeds from you, but not me. Is my face really that ugly?"

She rolled her eyes before hunkering down at his side. She took some of the sunflower seeds that he was holding in his hand and lined them up in front of his knees. The rest she spilled onto his jean-covered lap.

"It's not because of you, silly," she told him. "It's just scared because you keep trying to shove food in its face. Try being patient and getting it to trust you first."

So he tried. He watched patiently and silently as the little squirrel with red fur poked its head out of a hole in the tree. It skittered over the rough bark and hopped onto the green grass.

Little by little, it scurried towards him, popping one seed after another into its mouth. And after a few minutes, it finally perched on his lap and feasted on the seeds scattered over his jeans. Seeing the critter up close put a smile on his face.

He turned his head towards her and grinned. "This is so cool! Thanks for helping me out."

"You're welcome," she replied. "It's not anything to brag about though."

His eyes widened. "Of course, it is. That's how you got me."

"Oh really?" she asked with a little laugh.

He leaned forward and kissed her cheek before she could move away. As far as he was concerned, it was true. She'd earned his trust by being patient with him, which was why he loved her so.

A beautiful story. Through a casual scene, you've revealed the formulae to be loved - Patience and Trust. With trust, comes acceptance. Thank you for sharing. :) I visited your website, and I was impressed with the style.

You describe the squirrel and its action perfectly. I can visualize the critter hopping in the grass towards the couple.  I really enjoyed reading it. It is not too short and not too long. Just nice for a quick reading. Your choice of verbs are really great. The moral values behind the story is also nicely potrayed. Thumbs up.

Thank you so much for this comment! I'm glad you think that it's a good length for flash fiction. Fun fact: I've never seen a squirrel in real life before, lol. Had to go with a few YouTube videos for this one. ^u^
