A short story about dissociation. *****cover art doesn't belong to me, it is by Steph Hope*****

I feel sick. My face feels hot and my body aches. This bathroom floor is cold and littered with dirty clothes. The rooms are never clean, I try, but my mind goes blank and I can’t bring myself to clean. The change of scenery from my bedroom to my bathroom is comforting, so I stay here in hopes that it will pull me out. If I sit here for long enough, the world turns animated; suddenly i’m a player in a video game.

I’ve finally been pulled from my desperate state of mind and thrown into a world identical to my own. There is one difference though; I am a player in this game, rather than a character. I can control my character, I can hear her every thought, I feel everything she feels, but this isn’t my world. Nothing I do truly matters, as this is just a video game and I am merely the player.

One thing I can’t feel from her are her emotions, she keeps those to herself, in order to protect me from her dark world. She feels every repercussion I cause once I leave, that way I can have my own temporary escape while in this world. I wish I could speak to her. I want to tell her how insignificant all of this will be in just a few days time. I want to tell her that it will be okay, that it’s always okay. I try to tell her, but her thoughts overlap mine.

Her thoughts are filled with denial and regret and anger. Her voice in my head is screaming, trying to drown out my words. The words she’s saying to herself are terrible, and I am left helpless. My escape has ended, and now i’m tasked with bringing her back down and trying to leave this world before my own thoughts turn into hers.
