This is just an Old Man's viewpoint on a national pastime.

I've lost all hope that television will return to it's original roll of providing entertainment, and keeping the public informed about events that take place beyond their local news.

Today's TV shows are all about how much Drama you can fold into each episode.

Hell, shows like NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, and Blue Bloods, among others, have gone from 1/2 crime solving drama, 1/4 human interest feel good stories, and 1/4 chasing bad guys, to Drama 98% of the time; the 2% is usually a feel-good ending to help you forget all the illogical and unbelievable soap-opera-ie mini-stories that they just fed you.

I've been told that Drama is easier to write than comedy. After all, there are a hundred ways for tragedy to strike a pregnant woman, but there are only about five proven ways to make the situation funny.

My point is, it can be done with the right writers. "Friends" and "The Big Bang" being two that come to mind.

Even mildly funny shows, in my mind, are far better than watching good actors reduced to acting like high school aged kids with over-reacting hormones.

Simple, and affective, comedy can work wonders in diversification for the viewing audience. Shows like the British Comedy, "Are you Being Served", comes to mind.

Other TV comedies that used silly life situations; they weren't hilarious but were good for a laugh and a wedge between the steady procession of dramas. Those were, "The Third Rock from the Sun", "Seinfeld", and "The Carol Burnett Show", among others.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good "Who Done It."

And a well crafted (believable) Drama has never offended me in any way. But when they try to cram six to eight mini-dramas into one viewing hour, and when every actor has a different Drama going on in each episode of every show, and there is no room for a little levity to brighten the mood, then it is time for me to look elsewhere. And I do.

Yes sir. Thank goodness that there are reruns of older shows to record. And record I do.

I leave the soaps to the wife for her afternoon fix, and Dancing with the Stars for her whimsical needs, but when evening comes it's reruns of Older Comedies, good old "Who Done Its", and well crafted Crime Dramas that are not written using 98% unbelievable life situations.

However, there is one Drama I do watch every day, The Nightly News. Just Say-in.

Old TV shows like MASH, come from the source material: books. Seinfeld, Friends, are scripted comedies with decent actors. NCIS came second to JAG. Today's shows are soap operas masking as dramas.

Rob --- Thanks for reading and the comments. And I do believe you are right, However, I thought NCIS was a "What To Be" military version of the first CSI TV series.
