TRUTH AND TRUST

By Al Garcia

Our immigrant forefathers founded this great American experiment with nothing more than truth and trust.  Everything else followed, and the resulting creation has been the envy of the world ever since.  Or, it used to be.

spirit of standing up for the values and ideals of liberty and equality, along with the thirst for justice, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom to question and freedom to discover. has withstood the tides of change in an ever-changing world.  And the simple notion of trust, that inspired and motivated strangers in a new land to join together to expand the vision and boundaries of a new frontier called America beyond imagination, continues to stir the basic instincts of the human conscience -- truth and trust.  Fragile ideals that define and distinguish the character and the balance of ourselves and our stature in the world.

Truth and trust have guided the hearts and minds of Americans through wars, and rumors of war.  Through times of despair and through times of national glory and triumph, Americans have always counted on the truth uttered by the great men and women chosen to guide our destiny, and on the trust in each other, that we will persevere, so long as we are united in spirit and belief.

Today, there is a hideous and repugnant weakness that is spreading across the land, that is attacking the values and ideals that have made this country great.  It is an infection attacking the two things that have made America great -- truth and trust.  And the two things that will be the downfall of America is spreading rapidly and it is deceitfully veiled in the red, white and blue of patriotism -- Alternative Facts and Fake News.

America has always stood by itself, and apart from others, on the fragile and delicate hallowed ground of fallen men and women whose belief in truth and trust defined and distinguished them.  Time will only tell if we can continue to stand upon that hallowed ground, and defend and protect the fragile pieces of a republic under siege from within.

And time is running . . . where will you be standing when the battle cry is heard?  Will you stand with America, or with those who have abandoned the dream, and seek only to burn down the house if they don’t get their way?

In the real world there are only winners and losers.  Winners look forward.  Losers keep looking back and trying to remake and relitigate the past.  And unfortunately, when trying to walk backward while looking backward, people trip and fall, while those looking forward, know where each step will lead.

As a Veteran, I believe in America and all Americans, and their freedoms of speech, assembly and protest.  I believe change is essential in any democracy.  However, change(s) imposed through the ballot box, not through third-world tactics of intimidation or attempted insurrection to overwhelm, overthrow, and impose a lost candidacy, a lost platform, or a lost cause, on the majority.  Democracy does not work like that.  Democracy does not exist when sore losers attempt to undo a free election, or unring the final bell of a political race or challenge.  Establishing, maintaining and preserving a democracy takes time, patience, truth and trust.

The January 6th Insurrectionists are not patriots.  Far from it.  They are anarchists, bullies, terrorists, idiots.  If they believed in democracy and wanted to keep a democracy, then after a political defeat, they would get up, dust themselves off, organize, and work for change by gathering support and votes for the next election, not try to overthrow and undermine their lost election.  It’s that simple.  And people should stop trying to make excuses for them and what they are still attempting to do – overthrow our American democracy.  And their effort will continue, so long as people keep enabling them by supporting their lie of who they are and what they want to accomplish.

Truth and trust are such worn and shabby ideas and notions.  Not exciting.  Not electrifying.  But that’s what made America, and what has kept it going for centuries.  An imperfect nation, striving and thriving, but not bowing or kneeling before any man or group of men, seeking to rule, untethered by the people’s voice and the people’s vote.
