After five years I didn’t know what I expected but it wasn’t the cold reception I’d gotten from Catalina, even the use of the nickname I used to call her seemed to repulse her, there was no playful banter anymore, the light had gone from her eyes, she had changed her hair and appearance but I still saw her as that sweet and innocent little Cat I’d enjoyed teasing but nothing shocked me more than the horror on her face at the table, she looked like a ghost, what terrified her so much?

Blaine had called me last week, he didn’t know how to help her, they had all tried for many years but as the years went on she seemed to be getting worse, she probably wondered why I was here, after all these years, she probably wondered why I came back. I came back for her.

“Blaine, what’s with her?” I directed my eyes towards Cat.

“Told you dude, it’s always like this”

“For how long?”

Blaine went silent.

“Blaine, how long?”

“Five years”

“Listen, when you left things were strange for her, we thought she’d get over it but it just got worse, I didn’t want to call you man, look I know your busy but I didn’t know what else to do, she doesn’t speak to anybody, I tried, I really did but –“

“You don’t need to explain, this is my fault”

“Sin, no”

“If I hadn’t of left –“

“What choice did you have, this is not your fault”

“I could have stayed like you did”

I felt Blaine put his hand on my shoulder.

“Nobody blames you, Sin”

“She does” I glanced across the table towards Cat and she just blankly stared through me.

“If anyone can help her it’s you”

“So I’m your last resort?”

“Something like that”

“Hate to break it to you buddy but you’re fucked” We both chuckled at the notion that I was there last hope to bring Catalina back from whatever nightmare she was dealing with.

Standing outside I’d left earlier than her, she hadn’t even said goodbye but I suppose I deserved that, that’s what I’d done five years ago, left without saying goodbye but I had my reasons, not that she would have understood.

“Are you ready?” She looked up at me.

“I thought you’d left”

“Nope, still here”

“Yes, I can see that”

“Hop on then”

“Excuse me?”

“Hop on”

“I heard you the first time”

“Well –“

“Well the answer is no but-“

“Come on Cat, let me give you a ride home”

Why? Why not? Why was she been difficult? What did she think I was going to do to her?

“I want to make sure you get home safe” She roared with laughter and if she wasn’t mocking me right now I’d have laughed right with her because it was the first time I’d seen a semblance of her former self, the first time I’d seen a genuine, real smile and it was fucking beautiful.

“So now you care?”

“Cat –“

“Thanks Sin but I’m sure I will survive”

“I know Cat, please just humour me” She curiously watched me.
