I sit by the fire and watch the first snow flakes of winter

first snowflakes
leaves are turning
red, yellow, and orange
grass is starting
to turn brown
frost is waiting to bite
afternoon sun is low
in the southern sky
geese are lining up
in a big V in the blue heavens
to head south for winter food
squirrels are gathering
nuts each day and storing
them in their nest high in the trees
next-door neighbor
is tuning his snowblower
ready to take on a fierce winter
and I am sitting by my fireplace
with a good book and a cup of hot coffee
waiting for the first magical snow
flakes to start falling
so I can again smile
like I did when the first snowflakes
fell on our yard all those many years ago
