I wrote this for the Curtis Brown Instagram contest. The task was to write a 150-word story beginning with a prompt: The gathering was just as I had imagined.

The gathering was just as I had imagined – my grandparents and my baby brother, rushing towards me with their arms open wide. They all hugged me at once, lifting me, taking away every ounce of physical pain left within my body. I cried like a baby that day; a joyful cry, signifying my waiting has come to an end. It took me a while to believe we’re all finally together again; it’s been decades since I last saw them. Instead of a silent agony flowing through my veins, relief has spread inside of me. Love that never died, but was forced in a dark, quiet corner, crawled back out to the light, reminding me of the memories I dared only to dream of, once in a while. But at that moment, everything was set right. We were together, never to part again.

Heaven is such a beautiful place.

I really like this! Short, sweet, and and heartwarming in just a few words. Well done.

Thank you so much! I haven't won the contest, but I wouldn't change the story for anything. It's rather personal. I really did lose my baby brother this year.
