Short poem about the mask that's worn during depression.

The pain doesn’t go away just because I smile.

My smile is the mask I use for protection.

Protection against misunderstanding.

Protection from having to explain the unexplainable.

It hides the Waterfall of Sadness and the Abyss of Darkness inside of me.

Without it I am vulnerable,

for I am lost in the Cave of Despair.

Trapped and hopeless,

I need my demons to believe they’ve lost,

even though they've almost won.

I have loved ones waiting for me out there,

cheering me on.

One day I'll find the exit and my mask will be no more.

I won't be lost inside my head with sadness and despair.

Instead I'll have a heart with hope and my smile will be real.
