is it too late when you're blinded by the lights?

Vanesa's never liked stupid bright lights. It gives her headaches and makes her heart race. She prefers the dark, no one sees her, no one notices her, well that happens even in bright daylight. She moves past sweaty bodies, reaching into a few pockets on her way out. A bit of cash for the next few days or so and oh of course a pretty little jewel for a cherry on top. She thanks Aiden’s stupid girlfriend for inviting her to the party 'you’ll have fun' she said. She didn't at first, but endings are always the best part.

Aiden drives her home in silence, did she blow it, does he know? Aiden knew her more than anyone has ever, they practically grew up together. Aiden's parents died of an overdose; she thinks her parents are soon to follow.  'You'll learn soon that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree' her dad so wisely told her. She scoffs at the thought. ' Yea, you showed me that' she replies in her mind.

Every day she walks past her parents without them seeing her, like a ghost. She likes that, she views it as a hidden strength. Aiden picks her up to go to her next target, though he doesn't know that yet. Amalie has a pretty smile, she just hopes Aiden finally breaks it, it’s been 3 weeks already the girls starting to get on her nerves by now. She knows that Amalie was only good for one thing anyway, well to her at least.

They arrive at a mall, " wait, I thought you said we're going to Jasmin's" she asks. "I changed my mind" he replies " just help me look for a gift, Amalie's mom invited me over for dinner, thought it might be a good idea to bright a gift or something." he continues. She rolls her eyes but just goes with it, maybe she'll just pick a few other pockets. Not anything big but better than nothing.

They go around the mall in silence, she knows something is not right with Aiden. He's usually the type to tell her about everything she doesn't even care about. So, his silence is making her uneasy. It’s like he's waiting for her to say something. She let the silence go on for just a bit more, till she just couldn't take it anymore. " What’s wrong with you? Are you mad or something?" she pries. "no" he shortly replies. "Huh, really? You sure you don't have anything on your mind?" he looks at her bewildered like he just heard her say the most outrageous thing in the world. "I don't know, do you?" he says almost shouting. Vanesa furrows her eyebrows, "no, I don't" he turns his back to her then sighs. "It's nothing let’s just.... ill drop you off at Jasmin's" his actions are confusing her, but not wanting to deal with it she just silently lets it happen.

Jasmin's house was closed like no one was home. She turns to Aiden to ask, but he beats her to her word "you know I would have just given you money if you needed it" she should be surprised but she's not, it's Aiden after all. "I don't know what you're talking about " she tries to lie but even she knows she's a bad liar. "Oh really? Oh, ok then. So, you don't know where Amelie's stupid ruby necklace is" this started her heart up 'did he see her take it?'. Rookie mistake, she should have locked the door.  " No Aiden, why would I know where your stupid girlfriend’s necklace is." he leans back in his seat then lets out the ugliest snort she ever heard. "How long have you been doing this?" She stares at him, no words come out of her. After a while of staring, she decides that this isn't worth it, so she jumps out of the car and runs home. Well, at least she knows that no one’s home.

When midnight struck, Vanesa leaves the house through the front door to get herself another pretty jewel. Surprised to see Aiden standing in front of her with his car " I'm coming with you". She calms down her racing mind and tries to feign ignorance "to where?". " Jasmin's" he gets in his car and jump-starts the engine. She's thinking of just leaving him there and just replan her little heist to another day, but she thought 'ah well, f it I guess if he's still willing to help her steal after discovering that she just stole from his girlfriend then maybe Amalie was just good for one thing for him too. She wants to cackle at the thought. Maybe she should have told him earlier, I mean he has always been her partner in crime.

They get there faster than she thought they would. She picks the lock in the backdoor while he stands there looking at her with a bewildered, no almost constipated look on his face. Once they get in, she sneaks up the stairs to Jasmin's room, she'll just look around because she didn't get to scope out the area earlier. When she opened the door to her friend’s room she freezes after hearing Aiden's next words, "I've called the police already, it would just be pathetic to try to run." Vanesa's still frozen but she could feel tears coming to her eyes. Aiden does know her well, but maybe she never knew him. Bright red light starts flashing behind her, she hears the loud siren of the police next. She lets her tears fall with her next thought "I've always hated stupid bright lights".
