While many training and performance concepts are mentioned briefly when training in almost any karate or martial art system, they are seldom defined in simple, practical, easily-applied terms that make a discernible difference in the understanding and performance of the practitioner. The older, original UechiRyu performance style of 100 years ago encompasses many of these concepts as taught by the founder, Uechi Kanbun Sensei. For the first time, many of these old-style concepts and training philosophies have been made available to practitioners in a conversational, easy-to-understand format.

"Bunburyodo" comprises the original non-sports training concepts and directions from Uechi Kanbun Sensei, as preserved and passed on by Toyama Seiko Sensei, Kanbun Sensei's last actively-teaching student. I am Toyama Sensei's student, and the only foreign practitioner of UechiRyu to be promoted to Kyudan (9th Dan) by a direct student of the founder, Uechi Kanbun Sensei.

Of greatest importance are the concept of softness above all, and that the Budo Arts were never intended to be used as sports.

It's my belief that these concepts and training directions are not exclusively restricted to UechiRyu system, but can apply equally well to any system or style of karate or martial art.

This is not actually a chapter, but the Introduction which outlines the book, it's contents, and a good deal about how the book came to be. I believe the reader will gain a very clear idea
regarding how we train in the older style of UechiRyu. Many of the old training concepts might well have passed away with Toyama Sensei and the previous generations of UechiRyu masters, had he not
chosen to share it with us and directed me to preserve everything possible.

Further books are being written to clarify and detail more of these older concepts and training philosophies, but I feel "Bunburyodo" can stand fairly well on its own.
