Courage

October 17, 2021 4:05 pm

Why didn’t I understand?

Why did I not see?

The courage that it took for you

To say those words to me?

Laying down your shield

Sheathing up your sword

Removing your breastplate

Steadily moving forward

Holding your own heart

In your battle tender hands

I turned around to see

Unsure of why you where

Standing there in front of me

I let your heart

Fall to my feet

Shattering like crystal

Upon a busy street

Why didn’t I understand?

Why did I not see?

The courage that it took for you

To say those words to me?

The courage to speak

The patience to wait

Rewarded by a question

Followed by heartache

If life is war

I have wounded you

Inflicting new scars

A traitor who fired

Within friendly lines

Label me a breaker

Let me serve my time

Tear me apart

And hang me for my crime

And as for you, my victim

As far as you may know

I’m just like all the others right?

Just another one that let you go

The smoke has cleared

The cannons fall silent

You were killed among

The fray

I’ve been left here

My greatest fear

And I must realize

The hour has gone

The hour was then

It’s probably too late for me

To apologize again

Why didn’t I understand?

Why did I not see?

The courage it took for you

To say that you loved me?
