Ai-Da

World’s First Robotic Artist

With capabilities of Artificial Intelligence, Ai-Da was built by Engineered Arts at the University of Oxford, in England. She is the world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid robotic artist, using cameras in her eyes, with her drawing arms programmed and designed by Ziad Abass and Salah El Abd—two students studying at the school of “Electrical and Electronics Engineering”. She was given the name “Ai-Da” based off a British mathematician from the Eighteen Hundreds, Ada Lovelace, who was the first female computer programmer. The project of creating the robotic artist was devised by Aidan Miller—as ‘Aida’ can be spelled in the first name as well. In February of Twenty-Nineteen, she was fully created and ready to release her skills of art.

At the University of Oxford, her first solo had taken place, later having her first major show at the Design Museum in London, United Kingdom, Twenty-Twenty-One. Works of art, by Ai-Da, has been featured at Saint John’s College in Oxford, England—in a gallery show named “Unsecured Features”, in Twenty-Nineteen. Not only does she draw, as Ai-Da has verbal ability also. A year after her creation, she appeared to her very first TED talk session in Oxford, titled “The Intersection of Art and AI”.

One million dollars were raised in art sales of her first exhibition, alone.  From scratch, a portrait by Ai-Da is completed within forty-five minutes, approximately. Engineered Arts, a Cornish robotic company and the builders of Ai-Da, is, in-fact, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of humanoid entertainment robots. Who designed and programmed her artful arms, Salah El Abd and Ziad Abass, are actually founders and Chief Technology Officers to a technical service in Egypt, named “Collard EG”, as ‘EG’ may stand for ‘Egypt’. The world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid robotic artist travels internationally, and with a team of well-skilled and wide-ranged contributors who go by “Oxfordians”.

In the month of October, this year, the robotic artist was traveling her way to performed at the Great Pyramid in Giza, getting detained for ten days at the Egyptian border due to Egyptian customs having belief of Ai-Da being a robotic spy. Her having a modem and cameras as eyes grew skeptical minds. Suspicion of espionage, removing her eyes—housing built-in cameras—became a debate for the Egyptian officials at the border, although removal did not occur.

Titled “Forever is Now”, the event began October Twenty-First, coming to an end on November Seventh. It was to be the very first exhibition of art held in the historical area. Eventually, Ai-Da makes it to the event, presenting her work at the foot of the pyramids. The main highlight of the event, she was. Organizing the event, Art D’Egypte is a privately-owned multidisciplinary firm in the country, founded to support Egyptian arts and the cultural scene, by Nadine Abdel Ghaffer—an Egyptian-French woman.

To the next level, self-portraits have even been made by the talented robot. To some, it is greatly seen as creepy. Ai-Da’s ability to draw, paint, sculp, and speak leaves a good amount of people disturbed, but having them even more spooked would be the self-portrait as others find it fascinating.

What art is can be, very well, debatable. “Today, a dominant opinion is that art is created by the human, for other humans. The ancient Greeks felt art and creativity came from the Gods”. “Ai-Da’s work is art, because it reflects the enormous integration of technology in today’s society. We recognize ‘art’ means different things to different people.”
