Against all the grave signs, love shines through brightly.

During my walk I encountered a curious couple. A husband and wife, perhaps only a decade older than me. Yet their movements were so melancholically slow as if they were mummies risen from their sarcophagi. Their words were tired, exhausted. Instead of uttering, they rather dully exhaled them. Since I had no chance to overtake them, I listened in on a snippet of their conversation.

“According to the Tarot, today’s card is the four of swords.”

“That’s not good.”

I used to play Tarot a bit, so I know the cards. That made me think their words were a strange coincidence. Although it may not have been coincidence… Because the face of this card shows the inside of a stained glass crypt. Three swords hang down from its wall and there’s one more on the sepulchre itself. And if I’m not mistaken, in divination this card symbolises retreat, healing or not having to make a decision immediately. Perhaps the mummy couple found this card unfortunate because they had rested in their tombs for too long.

However, the dark grave “signs” didn’t leave me later either. On the banks of the murky Danube, the Halászbástya (Fisherman’s Bastion) was moored. This ship is the local agent of Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. It usually arrives when someone is buried on the water. I saw it quite a few times this year, as well as the black crowds with their white flowers it attracts at such times.

It seemed as though everybody and everything wanted to hold a funeral because of the arrival of the autumn, but summer didn’t take this into account. As it was summer again today. A soft and pleasant breeze was blowing. And the sun was smiling as brightly as you do on the photos you send me…
