Life is not a walk in the park.Oftentimes, we are forced to make decisions that would hurt us and our loved ones ...

Seconds after l had cracked my eyelids open, the decision l had reached the night before presented itself in my conscious mind. I had chosen not to tell them. The sun was not yet out and l realized l was the only person awake in the house. That alone was to my advantage .l wanted more time to think clearly.

I steadily got out of our frayed, old and dusty blankets, careful not to wake Chipo, my little sister, and my mother. Outside nature had already risen .Flowers blossoming, birds singing and trees swaying in accordance with the rhythm of the soothing calm breeze that was sweeping across the lands. I stood like this for a while, enjoying the scenery, mesmerized by what l believed to be a huge gift to mankind from God, Nature.

I sighed as l realized l was going to miss taking a glimpse of nature from our little kitchen. Our only shelter, the kitchen. That single thought brought me to reality. I quickly tried to straighten the crumbled dress that l had slept in. It was ugly and almost worn out but it was one of the only three I owned. I stared at the two sleeping figures on the floor and almost broke down in tears.

Even in their sleep, their faces told enough of the challenges we faced daily. Us, the poverty stricken family. My mother was in her early thirties but her face was starting to wrinkle up, her body thin enough to evoke feelings of sympathy from soft people including her very own daughters. She was not a pretty sight. She was by far the most hardworking woman l had known but the ends never seemed to meet.

At one time I had offered to go to look for a job but Ma Mlipho is stubborn, she had calmly disagreed despite the savage times we were currently facing.” I’m your mother and l will take care of you. That is my responsibility. If l by any means let you suffer for me, l will never forgive myself! You are only twelve so stop worrying, l will try my best.”

I knew at that exact moment that she had once again brought the conversation to an end. However, I was sure that my plans were still in play. Today was the day. I was going to depart from that cursed place for the sake of my family. I had thought of leaving a letter behind but neither Mama nor Chipo could read .Chipo had stopped attending school when she was six and I at the age of ten.

I opened our only bag, grabbed my two dresses and folded them up .My time was up, I had made the decision. I was going to go and be back in less than a year .I would come back to change their lives .That was my goal .I stepped out and took the road that went further down the mountain .I didn’t look back ,I knew l wouldn’t be able to fight the urge of turning back. I didn’t even know where l was going or what the future had in store for me. I cried in anguish as l continued my journey on bare feet.
