Tonight, I ran over to CAVA, a Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant, to order a pita with falafel. They were out of falafel and had to make a new batch. Meantime, I went to the men’s room. As I walked through, the door behind me closed, and I immediately noticed the knob on the door was missing. With the stem exposed, I worked at jimmying the lock with my house key, but after a minute, I decided to call the store, asking if they could open the door. The following message played:

“At CAVA, we care about your safety and the safety of our team members...To speak with a team member press 4...”

Soon after pressing the number to connect with someone, the call disconnects, and I wondered if CAVA had ever considered this safety scenario.

I thought worst case; I could call 911, but decided to work on the door some more. After picking at the lock for some time, I got the door to open.

Returning to my lonely pita lying on the counter and waiting for my ingredients selection, a team member greeted me with a look of surprise, wondering where I had gone off.

I explained to him how I got locked in the bathroom, had picked at the lock to let myself out, and that phone calls to this store were not possible. He asked if I was police or military, and I responded government. It was a random question, but he was nice enough to recognize my inconvenience and offer my pita free of charge.

As he ran off to put an out-of-order sign on the door, I thought about how some people may have reacted differently in my situation, and it could have been an absolute nightmare. I'm happy it ended well, like the pita I just inhaled!
