“Be careful with that, you’ll break something soon.”

You take the kaleidoscope away from your eye and look at your brother examining an ant farm.

“Did you know that a kaleidoscope will never show the same picture twice; it always changes when you turn it.”

You hold it up again and stare into the array of bright colours. Twisting it, the prominent blue splits into a million pieces of red.

“It’s like a dance,” you say, still holding it to your eye. “All these little pieces dancing just for you, and you’re the only one that will ever see it.” You twirl in the spot, the kaleidoscope dangling from your hand.

“Stop it.” He grabs your shoulders firmly. “You’re going to knock something and then you’ll have to pay to replace it. Or,” he gestures towards the ant farm. “You’ll be spending the rest of the afternoon playing hide and seek with ants.”

“Fine,” you say mournfully.

As soon as he turns away you bring the kaleidoscope back to your eye.

There it is, the colours glittering like a hundred rainbows were all trying to show off their colours. You twist it, watching them dance before your eyes; each movement slipping in and out as if they were all connected, trying to reach each other…

“Stop!”

You feel the kaleidoscope yanked from your grip. You hadn’t realised you’d taken three steps closer to the ant farm, your outstretched elbow dangerously close to it’s glass.

“We’re leaving.”

Without another word, you’re being steered out of the shop into the sunlight. Blinking out the brightness of colours that flits across your eyes, you lift your arms up.

“Maybe I’ll become a dancer,” you say triumphantly.

“Maybe,” he says unconcernedly. “But don’t forget last week you wanted to be an astronaut.”
