I wrote this several years ago when I was spending a lot of time on chat sites. There was one site I was part of where there were several different groups. Two of these groups started fighting and it ended up spilling over into other users' rooms. In the end, many of us that wanted to be part of this problem were forced to get involved. I was probably one of the worse and ended up writing this after I pulled a particularly nasty trick and got a dozen people banned from the site.
A few years later I found this stuck on an old flash drive and it sparked an idea for another story which I ended up writing.

This war started because of a difference in philosophy.  At first, it was just words being shouted back and forth.  Which side struck the first blow nobody remembers if they ever knew.  It went back and forth with both sides generally holding their own.  There were those of us who attempted to remain neutral.  We watched the war with interest as it intensified until we on the fence were forced to choose a side.  That is when this useless war went from bad to worse.  The two original sides may have been at war, but they respect each other sort of and honored an outdated method of war.  We fought but by our own rules and we didn’t respect or honor our enemies.  I watched my love die and lost countless friends in this war, but through it all, I have continued to battle.  I have destroyed whole realms slaughtering every man, woman, and child in them.  But this war draws to an end, not because one side is close to winning, but because we have destroyed ourselves.  There are so few of us left that the human race may cease to exist.  You may be wondering now if I’ll continue to fight and I ask you what else is there for me but the blood, the gore, and the slaughter.  Right now, I feel the bile in the back of my throat rising but tomorrow I’ll stand ready to kill again and again until we are all dead.

Some wars go on for so long, that people forget what actually started it, but they know what maintained ...hate!
