I want to be just me

by

Sheridan J. Wilde

If all the world is truly a stage,

And all of us play roles,

Is it really so important,

To focus on poles and holes?

I really don’t want to be labelled,

I want to be just me.

People are people, when all’s said and done,

And that’s the way it should be.

Does it help you to know that I was born double-X,

But feel like I’m really X-Y?

I will wear a skirt if you say that I should,

But I’d rather be dressed like a guy.

And I hate being branded non-binary,

It sounds like something from maths.

Nobody can see my chromosomes!

And I change on my own at the baths.

So, if you insist that I carry some label,

And I do understand that you might,

Don’t equate sex and gender,

‘Cos gender’s not black-and-white!
