Another Essay on Abortion

Note: This essay started out as a multiple part youtube comment on the following youtube video:

Over all, I think this is a very good video. We definitely need to be concerned about over consumption of the earth's natural resources. However, I take issue with what you said about abortion. You say that abortion is about a woman's right to choose, but I don't think anything could be further from the truth.

From what I understand, most women who have abortions don't actually want to do it. Instead, they're usually coerced into it either by their boyfriends or by their families, because their boyfriends or families don't want the women to have babies because the boyfriends or families are afraid that they will have to pay money to help the women care for those babies. Because of this, young pregnant women who would never dream of killing their unborn children willingly, are frequently bullied into having abortions anyway, even though they don't want to.

Furthermore, an abortion is often very emotionally traumatic for a woman. Most women are biologically programmed to love their children more than anything in the world. For a woman to kill her own child before that child is even born often leaves deep, painful emotional scars which can last for many years.

Also, the pressure for a young woman to have an abortion isn't necessarily limited to the social kind, either. Sometimes, a young woman who refuses to have an abortion is subjected to the most appalling sort of violence and brutality, either by her family or by her boyfriend, in an attempt to kill her unborn child and prevent her from giving birth thereto. Every so often, you read some tragic story about some poor, unfortunate young woman being brutally beaten by her boyfriend, her family, or someone else, merely because she was pregnant and refused to have an abortion.

Of course, those are only the women who refused to get abortions. I can't imagine how many other pregnant women don't want to have abortions but are intimidated into it anyway, because they are afraid of what their families or boyfriends will do if they don't have abortions.

Ultimately, I don't see how anyone could possibly construe abortion as giving the ability to choose whether or not they have children. Abortion isn't about giving women the right not to have children if they don't want to. It's actually about giving society the right to prevent a woman from having children whether she wants to or not!
