~ Chapter 3 ~

'What was his name again?” Jess asked as she turned the intersection. I clenched onto the car door handle for dear life. Jessie was the perfect example of rebel with her dyed violet hair and eyes covered in dark kohl. The new customers easily misunderstood her appearance for a gang banger. Well, it was all in the looks, Jess was just the contrary to it.

“Clayton Black.”

Her kohl smeared eyes stared at me for a minute and back, “The Clayton Black?”

“What does ‘The’ mean?” I quoted it with my fingers.

“Lord of the Black Manor?”

“You’re kidding?” Clayton can’t be the lord of the manor, I mean c’mon. Psycho killer, yeah fine but lord of the manor? How am I supposed to shove that information down my throat?

“Let’s see, family dies in a fire ten years ago?” Jess interrogated.

“Filthy rich?”

“A total weirdo.”

“Living by himself with granny Grumpy.”

“Well, you have the stinking rich heir of the Black enterprise and lord of the manor.” She snorted, “I’m starting to wonder if you even live on planet earth. You’ve been dating him since a week and you don’t know basics.”

Jess’s phone began to vibrate in the console, she reached for it, checked the text message and let it tumble back, “It’s Beckett, his ass caught some serious fire. I need to hurry up with the fire extinguisher. ”

That’s the thing with Jess; sometimes she tends to speak in code languages which I suck at cracking, “Whatever does that mean?”

She shook her head, “He is loitering around the movie theatre for an hour now and he is mad at me for making him wait.”

Beckett was Jessie’s long term boyfriend; who looked more like her brother than a boyfriend; the exact replica of Jessie’s, only his hair was charcoal black. Last year he won an award for Mr Whiny and successfully restored the title.

“Eyes on the road, this isn’t Grand Theft Auto.” I warned her.

Jessie pulled in front of the Amusement park gates the Tokyo drift style, grinned to herself like she’d pulled some major stunt. “What time should I pick you up by?”

“I’ll let you know or I’ll catch a ride with Clayton.”

“Right, now who wants a ride in a beat up old 1998 Subaru when you can easily get one in a flashy BMW. You’re turning into a snobby bitch by just hanging out with Richie Rich.  Did I just rhyme a line?” She mocked, changing the stick gear, “Is Clayton here yet?”

“I’m not sure.” I scanned the lot packed with cars. I couldn’t find his bmw. “I don’t see his car.”

As if on cue my phone vibrated, I retrieved it out of my pocket to find a text from Clayton.

I’m waiting at the entrance, have you reached already?

I glanced up and scanned the crowded entrance and spotted the tall figure busy with pressing buttons on his phone, his other hand dug deep in his denim pockets. Clayton looked anything but excited, but mostly leaned towards the bored side.

“There he is.” I told Jess, waving my arm so I could catch his attention.

Jess peered out the car, squinting her eyes in the dark, “I don’t see him. It’s packed.”

“He is right there.” I pointed.

Jess raised her eyebrows, “well, whatever. You have the pepper spray, right?”

“Good.” She clicked the seat belt into place and waved her long black finger nails at me, “See ya.”

I watched as she rounded a corner with a screech.

The Amusement park was bustling with the chaotic crowd; the aroma of grilled stall food and fresh popcorn overwhelmed my nostrils waking my taste buds. Normally, I didn’t enjoy places like amusement parks or water parks but Clayton insisted we came here together. I realized with time that it had nothing to do with my personal dislike but just hated it because whenever I noticed a family passing by, I had a sudden hollow stretch somewhere within me evoking all my sappy emotions, bringing back the years I had spent yearning for my parents.

“Are you alright, Abi?” Clayton asked me.

He rubbed the palms of his hand, scanning the adrenaline junkie rides. He waved his finger in the air, like counting the amount of rides or writing in the air with an invisible pen? He shook his head to himself.

Weirdo or just a great looking Mr Bean?

The information about him being the man running an enterprise and owning a large property on the edge of the lake was hard for me to comprehend. He seemed like a really fun person for a man who was living alone in an entire mansion with his granny. Not that it was any issue or my business. He didn’t even look more than twenty-five.

Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, “Clayton, how old are you?”

He eyed me curiously, “thirty.”

“How old did you think I was?” he asked looking me straight in the eye.

“I thought you were younger.”

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, Abigail, but I’m the worst case of a teenage soul pushed into a thirty year old body.” he laughed, “Would you like some ice-cream?”

He made his way towards the food stalls and returned a few minutes later with a cone of ice-cream, Clayton wore a half-sleeved t-shirt which highlighted his puffed up biceps and the beautiful tattooed script over it that said, ‘Fear is the path to the dark side.’ I tore my gaze reluctantly away from the tattoo. He slipped a hand on the small of my back and led me through the throngs of people, maybe I was busy chomping on my ice-cream or eye-raping Clayton since I didn’t see the big beefy man walked right into me, I smeared the cone on his t-shirt, watching the gooey brown liquid drip down with sheer dismay.

“, I’m so sorry...” I stated apologizing, fumbling in my handbag for tissues.

He glared at me furiously, “Why don’t you watch which way you’re going?”

“Look, I’m really sorry...”

Next thing I knew, he gave me a slight push. I staggered back almost losing my balance.

“Did you just push my girlfriend?” I watched as Clayton came in his face, the muscle in his jaw working. He grabbed a fistful of the man’s collar and barked, “Looks like Mommy didn’t teach you any good manners. Apologize.”

“She was the one who pushed me.” The man continued, pointing an accusatory finger at me like that that was going to prove his point.

“Clayton, it’s okay.” I touched Clayton’s arm in hopes of calming the brewing testosterone, “It’s not his fault.”

We watched as he backed away---still blazing in fiery flames, smoke and all, making a run for the main entrance towards a group of thugs across the street. Everything after that played in front of me like a slow movie.  As soon as the man set a foot in the middle of the road, out of nowhere, a truck zoomed its way towards him, blaring but not making any attempt of stopping. Like he was pressing on the gas on purpose. I screamed when I saw the man fly in mid-air and landed on the hard ground with a painfully loud crunching thud, forming a red puddle of blood. Swarms of people began running in his direction to get help.

“How did did..that..just..” I strutted.

Clayton pulled me away from the scene, “That was horrible but what he did to you was even worse. Guess he paid for it.”

I gaped at him, how could he say something so awful so casually? That man could die.

“Come let’s go ride the Ferris wheel.” Clayton suggested.

I was starting to feel sick after what I’d just encountered; I didn’t even feel hungry anymore. Our previous dates were quite normal, we usually crashed at our favourite food joint and the conversations would just fire up automatically. Neither of us had to try hard, but something felt so off today. It was absolutely normal for Clayton to be a mix of charming and weird but his weirdo meter had just surpassed the maximum level.

Clayton helped me into the small cabin first before hopping in. The man shut the gate and locked it. The cabin moved a little further upward and I watched some girls hop into one. Like the guy Clayton was, he closed the distance between us, not leaving an inch of space. I should have seen this one coming and I’d been wondering why he was so pushy with the Ferris wheel. He laced his cool fingers through mine.

“Clayton, you’re cold.”

“Yeah, I know.” he angled my face towards his, as he leaned in “let’s do some cliché high school thing.”

I put a finger on his lips pushing him away slightly, “It’s not like you to get pushy.”

“Would you rather I kissed someone else?”

“Then what’s your problem?”  He pulled away, sounding pissed. He ran a hand though his hair and inclined his face towards me, “Have you ever wondered how you’d want to die?”

That question caught me off-guard.

“Normal death would be fine. I’d like to die when I’m old and deaf and watched all my grandchildren play ball in my yard, just a normal death while asleep.”

He eyed me sceptically, the contours of his mouth twitched upward in a sneer, “What’s the fun in that?”

I preferred to remain unresponsive; I hadn’t even noticed the cabin had travelled so further up. I swallowed hard when I glanced below. The crowd below were the size of insects. The roller-coaster on the right hand side came rushing down, the exhilarated screams echoed. Suddenly, the cabin came to a halt right at the top, swaying slightly with the force of the wind.

Dammit! If only I hadn’t watched Final Destination.

Clayton peeked at the view down, turned to me and continued, “Have you ever wondered what it would feel like if I unlocked the gate and pushed you down?”

“You did not just ask me that?”

He shook his head, “Just a theory, would your brain squish and splatter or would your body parts get cut before you hit the ground?”

That’s it. I needed to get the hell away from here.

Clayton stared into space, his expression’s dead pan, “Sounds like an exciting death, right?”

“Are you sick?”

“Not sick babe, the thought of butchered organs amuse me to a certain degree.” his eyes lit up as he reached out to me. “Would you like to give me a demonstration?”

“No. Stop, Clayton, No.” He grabbed me by my arm ready to haul me down, a pang of fear settled in deep down to the pit of my stomach, “NOOOOOOOOO....”

A set of firm hands shook me hard, “Are you okay, lady?”

I was drenched in sweat; pools of ocean green were fixed at me as he offered me a glass of water. It took me a while to register that I wasn’t on the Ferris wheel, I skimmed through the group of onlookers for Clayton but he wasn’t in view.

“I was here with a man, did you see him?” I asked, downing the entire contents of the glass, “He is tall, dark hair with tattoos.”

The man shook his head, “No, no, I didn’t see any man.”

I pressed my temple. What is going on with me and where is Clayton?

Some romantic date this was. Taking your girlfriend on a Ferris wheel, try to kiss her and then talk some B.S about getting body smashed. Just perfect. Clayton could write a book named ‘How to scare the living shit out of your girlfriend.’

I rummaged in my pocket for my phone and speed dialled Clayton. He’d better have some answers or he was as good as toast.

“Abigail, Hey!”

“Don’t you ‘hey’ me, Clay, did you just graduate grade four?  Or did you think it was April Fools? I already hate heights and I came to the amusement park because you insisted on it.”

“Wait.wait.” Clayton sounded perplexed, “What are you talking about?”

“I haven’t come across a bigger jerk, seriously Clayton. That was not funny.” I growled over the phone.

“Why would you say something like that?”

He’s got to me kidding me...playing the pretence game with me again.

“You insisted on taking a Ferris wheel ride, then you talk some bull about how exciting it would be to get my brain splattered and then you go AWOL on me. Mister, you are some gentleman for a lord of the manor.”

“Abigail, you need to calm down. I have no idea what Ferris wheel you’re talking about. I’ve been keeping my grandma company for the rest of the evening and that’s the reason I cancelled the plan for the date.” Clayton explained, “I’m sorry if that’s what you’re upset about baby, but I thought you received my text telling you I’d cancelled the plan and postponed it instead.”

All the blood drained out of my system.

“So you’re telling me, you were at your house the entire evening?”

“Yes. You can talk to my gramps if you want, she’ll be a great alibi.”

I wanted to pound my head against something hard, was this an indication that I needed an urgent appointment to the best shrink in town?

“You’re not lying to me are you?” I tried again, I couldn’t imagine everything.

He sighed, “No, I can send you the location if you want.”

“I’ll talk to you later, Clayton.” I told him as I hung up, making my way towards the guy who had allowed entry into the Ferris wheel.  I ignored the whining long queue.

He noticed me approaching him, “I’m not allowing you back again.”

“Hey, you know the man who was with me, right?” I heard a few people yelling at me to join the queue, “Do you know which way he left?”

“As far as I know, you came alone. There wasn’t anyone with you in the cabin.”

I like the twin idea that Demon writer said. I was like okay, so it's just a normal date. Then was shocked when the man was killed and Clayton said he deserved it that's not like him at all and then became even more shocked as he started to explain to her about death and his fascinations. I feel like I just went on a spinning ride ad then a roller coaster. So Uhhh. 0.o Dang that was good. KMU!!!!- Ashley

Oh. My. GOSH. That was an intense chapter! I nearly choked on my food when I read the part about the guy getting hit with the truck. *whistles* I love the references you are using in this story (the Napoleon XIV song, Final Destination)! I cannot wait for the next chapter!
As a side note, if you ever need any French for any stories, I could help. :)

I swear I thought this Clayton dude might be a sexy lion going to maul Abigail....but this is a lot scarier than sexy mad bull dog Rowan. I hate ghost thats for sure. But great chapter for building the suspense. Kmu, buddy

LOL. Your humors are unlimited. 'Weirdo or a great looking Mr. Bean?' ha.... WHOA. WHAT! My laughter died right after reading their conversation in the Ferris wheel. That's some creepiness in a guy. Just a tiny mistake I found: "Clayton could write a book NAMED".. Alright, now pushing ur girlfriend off doesn't seem so creepy enough. She came ALONE to the wheel. WOW... u really keep me wondering. Overall: Awesome, thrilling chapter. JUST CAN"T WAIT FOR MORE!!! XD

Girl! you are some writer and story teller. i was shitting myself when Clayton or who ever "it" or "he" was, was threatening to throw Abigail off the Ferris wheel! dam i hate heights to and i was experiencing vertigo just reading about it! i was genuinely scared by the way Clayton (or whomever)was acting and i thought she was a gonna for sure and that he was really a ghost and that he wanted her to join him in his world. the thought of falling off the ferris wheel was terrifying! Great job! lol i mean that the fact that he didn't give a dam about the guy being hit by the truck struck me as being very weird not to mention cold and callus! at tat point i was yelling out for Abigail to exit stage left. i really enjoyed the playful banter between the two friends at the beginning, it had me laughing and i thought this was going to be a funny chapter from start to finish. oh how wrong was I. the mystery surrounding Clayton has just increased 100 fold or is Abigail going insane being around him or are there more sinister forces at work here? i cant wait to find out! this is one of my favorites on Booksie my friend!...Cheers Dino
