Chapter 5

The first thing I noticed as I entered the vast dining area was how dark the room was. The table could easily accommodate eighteen people. Two servants dressed in matching butler uniform stood by the table with their eyes downcast like they were just waiting to be punished. The man from earlier, who had welcomed me at the door, the caretaker of the house beamed at me as he pulled a chair out for me to sit.

I settled down, smiling back at him. “Thank you.”

Clayton joined the table a second later, the girls who were more interested in inspecting their shoes, bowed their heads even lower. Either Clayton didn’t notice, or being treated royally was part of his daily routine that he hardly paid much attention.

He settled down at the head chair right beside me. I scanned my surroundings, and noticed it had a contrast difference from the massive living area. If that seemed like a posh museum, this was a horror movie set.  The beige, flowery wallpaper was sort of peeling off, giving it a sort of dull colour. The chandelier above my head was rustic.

It was like living the Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Where are the fangs, bitch?

The chiming sound of the chandelier in the silence was another example of sinister.

“A little too creepy for your taste?”

I glanced up from my chicken noodle soup towards Clayton. I could literally smell the rich flavours from the bowl.

“Uh...” I was never a good liar. “I..”

“This house is more than a hundred years old, passed on from generations. My forefathers lived in this house. I grew up here. You know how sometimes we have this sensitivity towards a place where we have spent our childhood? ” He asked in a matter of fact.

“Of course.”

Nope, I didn’t understand that sensitivity. Abigail Meyers had always been an orphan who grew up within the four walls of the orphanage, never adopted by a couple. Always the outcast. The fact that Clayton grew up in a large family did struck the cord of envy inside me, which I refused to show.

“The house was partly in ashes when it caught fire ten years ago, I had to reconstruct some of the areas, that’s one reason why you’d notice the house looks kind of old.” Clayton explained, seeming distant as he continued, “It used to be filled with so much love and, laugher. Family. Isn’t that right, Rafael?”

The man nodded. “Yes, my lord. Beautiful memories.”

Clayton’s fingers clenched the fork too hard. “Look at this place now. It’s empty. Haunted by loneliness.”

Dread washed over me, sympathy was also one of the emotions.

“Clayton, why is it so dark in this room? Why don’t you open the drapes?” I asked him politely.

And NO, I wasn’t checking if he was from Hungry or a descendent of Vlad Tepes.

Here’s the thing, ladies and gentlemen, vampires don’t exist. And sexy, charming, lord of the Manors could never be compared to the likes of Edward Freagging Cullen.

Clayton stared at me for a whole one minute, “It’s a little too sunny outside, my love, and the windows are as large as doors. But, don’t you worry; this entire room is going to be redesigned, as good as new. I’m just looking for a good experienced interior designer who is willing to understand what I want exactly. I will restore the previous look it had.”

I smiled in response. Rafael wheeled in the main course. He served everything with precision, placing grilled chicken on my plate and filled the flute with red wine.

I dug into the food, as there was a brief knock on the door. A man dressed in gray professional tailored suit stood at the doorway. His short chestnut hair was pulled back in a small pony tail, his high defined cheek bones and sharp features were strikingly similar to the man sitting in the head chair. He glanced at Clayton, then at me and froze. His green jaded orbs studied me carefully, not looking away. I was usually good at the stare-back-at-me-and- I-will-stare-you- down game.

Clayton cleared his throat, “Is there anything you need, Nathaniel?”

Nathaniel tore his eyes away from me reluctantly, and looked back at Clayton. “Brother, you have a call from the client in New York, Aaron Miller. You are to speak with him urgently.”

“I assume it can wait. I’m in a middle of a lunch date.” Clayton responded sternly, “Besides, I do not appreciate or enjoy being disturbed by work during my meals. Have him call me later.”

“But..” Nathaniel began.

Clayton waved a hand to dismiss his protests. “Abbi, meet my baby cousin brother, Nathaniel. He is the man I trust after myself. And Nathan, this magnificent lady is Abigail Meyers.” He grinned. “The woman your brother has taken a fancy to.”

“Quite the smooth talker isn’t he?” Nathan asked me.

I could feel the colour rise up my cheeks. “I’m a puddle of iced water.”

“Isn’t that rare coming from a man running the charming school since a decade?” Clayton teased his brother.

“Where are my manners?” Nathaniel laughed as he made his way towards me. He reached out for my hand, and I slipped my hand in his. He kissed it ever so lightly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. The name’s Nathaniel Black. I go by Nathan.”

“The pleasure’s all mine, Nathan.” I smiled at him.

“Look who is stealing the show now?” Clayton commented. The room was filled with a soft friendly laughter. “Would you care to join us, Nathaniel?

I didn’t miss the use of Nathan’s name. Somehow there was an edge to how he addressed him.

“I would have loved to brother, but unfortunately, I have a few errands to run.” Nathan waved at Clayton and to me he said, “I will see you soon, Abigail.”

I heard his sound of his footsteps until the silence took over again.

“Your brother’s really nice.” I took a bite of the delicious chicken. And damn if it didn’t melt in my mouth like toast on butter. This wasn’t something I usually tasted; it was something you’d find in a Fine and Dine restaurant, where the waiters judged you by the shoes you wore. A place where I’d forever remained on the shit-list.

“Oh, he is a talker.” Clayton said, and then added, “And a charming one at that.”

“Does he live here with you?”

“He lives away from town; swings by once in a while due to work.” he continued, “Our entire family lived in this house, his parents, mine, our grandparents, and the children. We grew up together. Things were good until the fire ten years ago which drew everyone apart. He chose to live away.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. Some things are bound to transpire, and there’s nothing that one could possibly do to stop it.”

What in the name of cheese crackers did that mean?

“You told me you had a younger brother, where is he?” I asked him. I was testing the waters here.

Clayton raised an eyebrow. “There are certain subjects in this house which are not open for discussion. Noah is one of them.”

He’d made it loud and fucking clear with a garnish of politeness that the family subjects were supposed to be pushed behind large iron gates and locked securely.

I decided to change the subject to his liking. I had just started dating him anyway, what right did I have when it came down to poking my nose where it didn’t belong? Family issues were none of my business but, grown up people act like children sometimes. That’s basic human psychology folks. You tell a person that he wasn’t allowed to do something; he’d be more than just willing to jump head first into the restricted sections. Since we were just dating, I figured we could take things slowly. Family could wait, so would my personal inquisition.

We spoke about his interests, countries he traveled and other subjects that did not include his dead family. All was good as long as family was a taboo subject.

“Would you like a grand tour of the house?” Clayton asked as he led me out of the dining area, his hand brushed my back lightly.

“Oh, I’d love to.”

“Rafael, would you show Miss Abbi around?”

Rafael who’d walked closely behind us halted, “Yes, sir.”

“Where are you going?”

“I have to take care of the client from New York; also, I need to catch up with Nathan before he leaves. I don’t like to be off track where punctuality is concerned. Give me a few minutes.”

“Take your time, don’t worry about me.”

“Tu sei la mia Bambina.”

You are my baby.

My heart fluttered like a million butterflies.

I stared at him until he’d swaggered down the carpet covered hallway. I glanced at Rafael who still appeared to be stoic and frozen.

“Was that Italian he just spoke?” I asked him.

“Yes, Miss. Lord Clayton’s mother was an Italian.”

“I see.” That explained his perfect command on the accent and so did the olive competition.

What else do I not know about this man?

Rafael led me to a circular lobby like room, there was another curved marble staircase, and two elevators on the opposite side of it. Leather couches were placed near the elevators. I couldn’t help but, notice the map. This was like a damn hotel lobby, without a concierge.

Rafael was still maintaining the I-m-forever-cursed-to-remain-a-mannequin demeanour. If you looked closely, you’d notice that he wasn’t that old. Maybe in his late forties.

“Do you ever get lost in this house?” I tried.

“No. After serving this house for almost thirty years, I’m acquainted of every nook and corner there is to know. There are certain rooms, the servants are not allowed inside, including close family.”

“But you are?”

The first time I saw him smile. “Yes.”

“The lunch was delicious. Who cooks lunch?”

“The head chef, Toby. He cooks the daily meals.”

“Are you always this difficult to make conversations with?”

A warm friendly smile crossed his lips, there was way he stole glances at me. Should I say smitten? But, that’s ridiculous. Why would Rafael, the house caretaker, be smitten by me?

“The lobby and a few other rooms are covered with surveillance cameras which are operated and examined thoroughly by the lord himself, and even though audio is not accessible, servants are not allowed to make personal conversations with the family or guests. I’m to only answer your questions to the best of my ability. It is my job.”

“I understand, Rafael.” I patted his arm, which forced him to react violently.

He glanced sideways, wide doe eyed and walked past me, leaving me standing in the lobby. I followed him out and into another passageway with closed doors. He’d squared his shoulders as he stared to walk off.

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

He came to a stop but, remained glued to the spot. I almost panicked when I watched as tears grazed his cheeks. Oh no, was he in trouble because of me?

“Is it Clayton?” I asked without much thought. “Are you scared of what he’d say?”

He turned to face me, his slightly greying hair covered part of his face. He took both of my hands in his. He sobbed, his body shook with the aftershocks. “Miss Abbi...I..”

Even though I felt uncomfortable being held like that, all alone with a man I hardly knew. I still let him hold me. He didn’t strike me as the dangerous man.

His tear stricken eyes levelled with mine. “Miss Abbi, don’t you remember me?”

Remember him?

“Miss Abbi, I miss you...please tell me, you remember me...” he continued, “Miss Abbi..I..”

The harsh authoritative voice echoed through the empty hallways and forced us to pull away. Rafael’s face now seeped with horror, fear and realization. You’d think someone had splashed a bucket of ice water on his face.

“My lord, I’m sorry..I..” he started.

Clayton was glaring him down, a dark aura beginning to overtake his once friendly features, fathomless, hooded eyes. “I will escort Miss Abbi thorough the remaining tour. I assume you have other important business to attend to, Rafael?”

He wasn’t asking. It was a command.

There was an unspoken agreement between the two as Rafael bowed his head. “Yes, master.”

Without so much as sparing me a glance, he strolled away as fast as his legs could take him. Clayton’s features had softened once again. “He asked me if I remembered him. What does that mean?” I asked.

“Don’t let him worry you, my dear, Rafael has his moments. You remind him of someone he knew.”

“I want to meet your grandmother.” I said.

His jaw clenched. “Abigail, trust me. You don’t want to meet her.”

“You are to not make any conversations with her. That's my only condition.” Clayton told me. “Just follow my lead.”

That was one small condition which I could certainly comply with. As I climbed the marble staircase, I watched the beautiful vista of the lake as it came into view. The Black River. The sunlight illuminated over the calm water, seeming like golden pearls. The glass wall in front of me was the only solid wall setting us apart. It was the place I’d want to take a dip into, basking under the warmth of the sun, spending my evening with a picnic basket.

We reached the first floor landing and walked towards a large oak door. His fingers hesitated only once as he clenched the knob. He knocked the door once. “Grandma. It’s me.”

A.N: Hello Lovely Readers, Firstly, I have to apologize for the long wait. I'm so sorry, and thank you so much for being so patient, but The Black Secret will be updated on a regular basis now that my other novel is on the verge of completion.

holy shit!!! (sorry for the language) but what was that all about??? since I started reading this novel I keep having the creeps and as always you leave me wondering what the hell is happening??? You know I love Clayton but what is it with him ,, one time sweet and charming next he's cold and scary ', and the way he treats Nathan damn that's not cool at all!!! and what's with Rafael??? I was really on the verge of going inside this novel and ask them what the hell is going on?? why he'd ask Abbi if she remembers him?? why he'd told Abbi that he misses her??? does she resemble someone from his past or does he really know her?? why Clayton reacted like that as if Rafael just committed a mortal sin?? and why Clayton doesn't want Abbi to meet his grandma at first and when he agreed to introduce Abbi he doesn't want her to talk to her??? There's something really creepy about this really ... but in a good way though .... and i'm sure i'll be wondering and waiting like crazy to read more of this ,, anyways i'm here wondering a lot again so don't let me wonder for so long and KMU always!!!

Tue, April 8th, 2014 1:34pm

Omg! This was such an amazing chapter, Kash! (: I seriously missed this novel so much! Glad it's back! I love Clayton, even though he's creepy-ish and stalker-ish! And OMG Rafael?! Why did he ask Abby if she remembers him or not. You know...I have a theory! I think Clayton is some sort of person who has lived for like 100s of years and so has his family (until they died or whatever) and Abby has like reincarnated or something. I don't know but yeah. :P so they probably knew eachother in their past life. And Rafael also knows Abby because of that!! That's my theory! Anyway, this was such an amazing chapter! KMU x

Tue, April 8th, 2014 3:42pm

Haha. I'm glad this makes it all confusing. I think if Clayton lived for about 100 years that would be too cliche LOL! SO NOPE! my lips are sealed..You'll find out about everything as you read further. Thanks so much for reading and commenting Ikky! :) Will surely KYU~

Tue, April 8th, 2014 1:43pm

I like the suspense in this chapter, where Rafael talked to Abby! Clayton says Abby reminds Rafael of someone he once knew, and maybe that's why Rafael asked Abby if she remembered him. It is pleasantly interesting! It was good to read another chapter of The Black Secret again:) Thanks for sharing, AbstractKash! Keep me updated.

Tue, April 8th, 2014 4:30pm

You'll find out all about that later in the story :) Thanks so much for reading and commenting Joel! Glad you find it interesting. will surely KYU~

Curiosity killed the cat but i don't care am very curious on Rafael. Could he be the person she met at the fair that day, Or Nathan? :o Oooooh Clayton is weird and iffy if you catch my drift. Abigail in my opinion better watch herself. I think am understanding 'The Black Secret' :) :) LIKE from me please please please KMU hun loving it :)

Tue, April 8th, 2014 9:25pm

That's a new theory. You'll see who it was that she met..I wanted you to be confused and I guess I did a fair job with playing with your head lol. oh no, your far from understanding 'Black's' secret ;) Thanks once again for the comment and like hun. Will surely KYU~

Thu, April 10th, 2014 1:38am

Hello AK,

Hmmm...Abigail is an orphan...and Clayton keeps a journal...He seemed to know her in the cafe...was the journal about her! There was a fire...and Raphael recognises her. Oh my god, did she lose her parents in the fire and, for some reason, she was cast out? Then where does Clayton come into it? Unless he's a brother she can't remember...Ooooh I like surprises, give me some more! :-)

Tue, April 8th, 2014 9:28pm

You'll see what the journal is about. I like your theory haha..lots of possibilities, but once you read the later chapters you'll find out. Clayton is not her brother..I can tell you that much ;) Thanks for reading and commenting!

Thu, April 10th, 2014 5:54am

yet another riveting chapter! All the mystery is wonderful! The cause of the fire in the house, why it separated the family the way it did? Nathan the charmer, Rafael the long lost whatever? Noah the unmentionable. there are so many unanswered questions which just keep you wanting more! great story telling my friend ;) Haha i got this picture of some old hag that looks like death warmed up sitting in a rocking chair with a permanent frown at the end when they were about to visit his grandmother. I get this impression she's going to be a cold old bitch lol as always thoroughly entertaining and humorous at times with Abi's off the cuff thoughts. Cant wait for more! so glad you have re-visited this mysterious novel. I still get this impression that Clayton is some sort of vampire or something. Having the blinds closed in the dining room. but you did make sure we were put off the scent there. So i am none the wiser to what he is. I just know somethings amiss! mysteries galore! love it!! Cheers Dino ")

Tue, April 8th, 2014 10:25pm

Every character has a role to play..I'm almost tempted to say more but I'm afraid I'll be giving out spoilers which I don;t want to do. You'll see Clayton's grandma in the next chapter. Clayton is definitely not a vampire. Thanks so much for reading and commenting Dino :) I'm so glad you liked the chapter!

Thu, April 10th, 2014 6:00am

Thu, April 10th, 2014 10:04am

First off. I have been waiting for this! I had to re-read all the chapters first, just to remember exactly where I left off. haha, but back to this new chapter. Rafael says he knows her? I mean I know it's already stated in other comments but, what if she did know him, but her memories about him as well as the other things in that place were purposely wiped out because, either to protect her or one of the guys is evil and if she begins to remember she can destroy whatever evil is in that house or something. I don't know for sure, but that would be awesome if something like that happened. Don't make it too predictable for me though haha, make it as complicated as you wish :P But don't forget to update me about this. :D

Wed, April 9th, 2014 10:08pm

Complicated Girl Clayton like, a ghost or something? At once, he's all goody goody; the other moment he acts like an evil barbarian. And how in hell is Rafael related to Abbi. I mean, he was so desperate to talk to her...a very interesting chapter. Had been waiting madly for this. Update me Kash...:)

Thu, April 10th, 2014 4:08pm

[A tear falls down my left eye, as it falls from it, the tears of joy] Ahhh! This is the shizznit! I can see why Raphael would be so desperate to be known by Abigale, I mean, she has that hotness factory that could make anyone think that she's famous. ;P Nathaniel seems like a great guy, I bet he works as a court justice attorney or better yet, in real estate. I can't get enough of this! I just want to read the whole thing, like, I'm rocking back and forth, continually scratching my arm at the moment! :'C x3 I'm looking forward to the next chapter; I would really like to know who grandma is. I think grandma is a secret agent, who runs a foot clan, demolishing gang members of the Bloods and Crips. But please don't tell me. I would like to wait and see if my prediction is true. :)

Sun, April 13th, 2014 2:42am

LOL! Your always so Hilarious. I'm glad you don't find Abigail boring. And I like your theories..something that never would've crossed my mind. Grandma a secret agent? we'll see. LOL! Thanks so much for the wonderful comment. hahaha.

Tue, April 15th, 2014 2:54pm

I am excited you have started up this chapter again. This is a great story, it has that eery supernatural feel I love so dam much! It is my favorite genera of story writing. I wonder why that servant knew her. It is an interesting situation. I can already tell there is something different about her, and I am anxious to see how meeting his grandmother will go. Keep me updated!
