Chapter One
I walk through the hallways as people jostle me, my heels making it almost impossible to walk straight. They’re six inches high. With them, I can come up to eye level with almost anyone who gets in my way. I grip at my skirt and pull it down farther over my ass. My sleeves itch my elbows as they also begin to ride up.
A hand grips my arm lightly to steady me. “Come on, baby, just a few more steps up to homeroom.” I’m grateful for his help, though I wish that I doin’t actually need it.
“Stand up straight, princess,” a boy teases. “Don’t want to make a bad name for your family.”
Suddenly, he’s grabbed and shoved up against a wall. “What did you say?”
“Tuck, leave him alone. He didn’t mean anything by it,” I reply and grip Tuck’s beefy hand. I pull him away from the senior who’s got his hands up in the air. “He’s not worth it anyways.” Tuck turns, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
“They shouldn’t talk to you like that, baby, it’s not right!”
We slid into home room ten minutes before the bell, like we always do. I sink down in my seat, yank off my heals, and throw them into my backpack.
“How’s Beckett?” Tuck opens his bag and pulls out converse. “I told you that I’ll kick his ass whenever you want me to.” I shake my head and take the high tops from him before slipping them on. “Come on, Conaway, you’re screwing yourself over with him!”
I shrug and take out my homework that I hadn’t gotten to last night. Tuck looks it over before sliding his worksheet out in front of me. Again, I shake my head, “I can’t. That’s cheating.”
“You work too hard, take it!” he orders me softly.
He takes the worksheet from me and writes it up before I can say anything. “I have sweatpants if you want them,” he tells me softly and slides the paper back to me.
I shake my head, “I can’t. Beckett’s coming to pick me up after school.”
Tuck grips my chin in his hand and forces me to look at him. His eyes are glossed over in fear, like he can’t believe what’s happening. “I knew something was up with you,” he tells me, “ever since we were five and your mom yelled at you for talking to me.” I laugh and duck my head. “I’m serious, come live with me.”
“And the guys?” I raise an eyebrow, “I don’t think so Tuck. But thanks for the offer.”
“Fine, but I don’t want you going on your date with Beckett, you know I don’t trust him.” Tuck leans his head in so he can whisper, “and I know he doesn’t respect you. It’s all your Dad. And his parents.” I grip his hand on the table, but he quickly puts his hand over mine. “We’re going out tonight. I’m taking you riding again.”
My face lights up.
“And,” he taps my nose, “I’m going to finally teach you how to shoot a gun. You never know, with that boyfriend of yours, it might come in handy.”
I couldn’t even think about shooting him. Tuck was off his rocket.
“He can be a sweet guy,” I tell him almost too softly and not at all convincingly.
“The day he’s sweet is the day I go on a first date with a girl without fucking her,” he winks at me as other students begin to crowd through the doors. “I’ll pick you up at eleven, be ready.”
