Chapter Four:

Warren

As soon as the bell rang for lunch break, I abruptly dashed to the cafeteria to catch Rachel and try to stop her from whatever she’s planning to do to Mike. As I entered the cafeteria, I realized I was too late to stop her. I saw Mike and Rachel standing near the jocks’ table arguing. And you don’t want to know what Rachel said to Mike. I cannot believe she managed to make the words airhead, jerk and dim-witted asshole in one sentence. Mike looked like he’s about to burst out of humiliation and anger.

“Lay a finger on him, and you’ll be sorry.” Rachel warned, shooting Mike evil glares.

“Alright, Conrad. Relax. It was only an accident anyway.” Mike said, looking really tired of hearing Rachel’s spiteful words.

I scampered to her direction and held her in the shoulder. “Rachel, that’s enough.” I whispered.

“Hey dude, I’m really sorry about that.” Mike apologized to me.

“You should be!” Rachel lashed out.

“Rachel!” I hissed, leading her to her table. “It’s cool.” I called out to Mike.

“I’m not yet done with you!” she spat. Mike looked really bothered, humiliated and scared. I mean, when Rachel says she’s not done with you, she’s not done yet with you. There are many tricks up on her sleeve.

“Rachel, stop!” I shushed.

“I want to sit with you today.” She mumbled, absently pulling my sweater.

“Sure, come sit with us.” I said. There is plenty of room anyway. Usually it’s just me, Liam, and a few friends sitting on our table. “It might ruin your badass reputation, sitting with the big Ls.” I teased, trying to cheer her up.

“Like I care. And you’re not a big L.” She reassured. “You’re just a way too nice guy.”

We headed straight to our table, not lining up for food anymore because my mom cooks really awesome food for the both of us. Rachel is like family, you know.

“Hey guys!” Lily and her boyfriend Andrew greeted in unison. They’re our good friends and one of those warm people who are liked by all. Honestly, I don’t know how they do it.

“What you did to Mike was epic!” Lily exclaimed, high-fiving Rachel. “That dude’s reaction was priceless!” she continued.

“I know right!” Rachel giggled.

“Oh, Warren?” Rachel called out. I turned to her direction. “Don’t forget you’re dropping by my house after classes, okay?” she smiled. “Sushi!” she cheered as I opened my lunch. I forked one and fed her.

“Yummy!” she said.

“There you are, Rach! I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Sophie said as she dumped her tray on the table and sat down. Whenever Rachel sits with us, the evil queen does too. “Hey guys.” she acknowledged us. “You won’t believe what I’m gonna tell you!” she said dramatically.

“What is it?” Rachel asked absently, feeding me sushi. She giggled as I slightly bit her finger.

“There goes the happy old couple again.” Sophie teased, rolling her eyes.

“Okay, so Mr. Smith told me that he browsed at my old Chemistry records and found out that I kept flunking that subject. So for me not to ever fail that stupid subject, he assigned me a tutor who’ll teach me for the whole year. And guess who my tutor’s gonna be.” She trailed.

“Who?” Lily asked curiously. Rachel and I leaner forward.

“That loser Liam! I mean, no offense Warren but I really hate that friend of yours. I’ve been stuck with him the whole summer because of my summer job. I don’t want to be stuck with him again!” she wailed.

“What’s up, guys!” Liam called as he sat beside Sophie, probably to spite her. “Oh, you.” He said as if Sophie was a lowly degrading life form.

“Speaking of the devil.” Sophie rolled her eyes.

So the whole lunch period passed by with Sophie and Liam bickering. It was fun to watch, really. Especially when an extremely beautiful girl like Rachel is feeding you sushi the whole time.

Rachel

“Mom?” I cried into my house as Warren and I entered. “Maybe she’s asleep.” I muttered. “Mom, there’s a hobo in the bathroom.” I tried. Still no answer. “Okay, she’s not at home.” I concluded.

“Alright, to my room!” I exclaimed.

“There! Your face looks perfect again.” I applauded. I put some concealer, foundation and powder on Warren’s face (there were a lot of whining, chasing and yeling for him to behave, I tell you) to hide his bruise so her mom won’t hyperventilate or something when she sees his face. Kara is known to overreact on things. We’re sitting on my canopied bed right now in my room. You would think that my room is owned by a seven-year-old. With the pink polka-dotted wallpaper, posters of childish cartoons, my collection of stuffed toys on my bed, Winnie the Pooh comforter and all. It’s my girly paradise.

Warren observed his face and said, “Nice. But I think there’s a hint of purple left in here.” He pointed at the lower side of his cheek.

I placed some more concealer on his face when suddenly, I noticed our faces were really close to each other. There was this part of me that really wanted to kiss him, to make him feel better. To make us feel better. But there was this larger part of me that was a coward. So instead I rested my forehead into his, our noses touching and I entwined my limbs to his waist.

“Will you promise me something, Warren?” I murmured.

“What is it?” he whispered, his voice so soft. I felt his breath on my lips.

“Promise me that when you fall for a girl or date someone, I would be the first person you’d tell. I mean, I’m your best friend and, you know.” I trailed.

“Yeah, sure.” He spoke softly.

“Great!” I said, jumping on the mattress.

“What gave you that idea anyway?” he asked curiously as he lied down on my bed.

“Well, I sort of figured out that you’re crushing on someone because you’re dreaming about kissing someone and exerting some effort on your looks.” I explained. I turned on the television in my room and rested my head on Warren’s hard stomach. He grazed my hair with his finger.

“How did you know I was dreaming about that?” he asked, obviously embarrassed.

I laughed really hard. “You were making kissy faces!” I taunted. I turned to face him and saw his face really red.

“What the heck! I can’t face you right now, I’m going home.” He said as he started for the door.

“Aww, don’t feel bad. You can beat me in Tekken 6 if you want. Just to make your sorry self better.” I teased.

“Kuma is sooo gonna kick Anna’s ass.” He declared.

“You wish. Bring it on!” I challenged.

Damn. I don’t want to talk about our Tekken match. That loser bear Kuma whipped my poor Anna’s sorry little ass five times in a row. Seriously, five times in a row.

“Get that thing away from me!” I wailed. I don’t want to see our PS3 anymore, really. It reminds how much I suck at Tekken 6.

“Ha! I rule! Who’s great? I am!” he whooped. I smacked that sucker with a throw pillow.

“Hey!” he exclaimed.

“Oh, by the way, would like to come with to the mall this Saturday morning?” I asked.

“Mall? Why don’t you ask Lily or Sophie instead?” he said. You see, Warren hates malls.

“Well, I really want to hangout with you Because someone,” I’m referring to him. “Was always gone during the summer to workout and look hot or something.”I rolled my eyes. “Just to make up for our lost time.”

“I’m not free this Saturday morning till the afternoon. I’ve got to go to the gym and we’re finalizing the school paper.” He said apologetically.

“Oh. You’re really working hard to get a six-pack, aren’t you?” I said. I cannot hide the disappointment in my voice. “Maybe I’ll just ask Lily to go with me.” I shrugged.

“But I want to hangout, too. Maybe this Friday?” he suggested.

“It’s a date!” I cheered.

This is too kind! KMU? I found it and I was like " OMG ANOTHER ROMANCE!" *Insert sheriking* Then my brother runs in with a baseball bat yelling "WHO'S THERE!?!" and I just sit there and stare at him. But anyway, this is really good!
