Chapter 12

He hasn’t come home yet. I’m a little worried. A lot worried actually. Zack and I entered a dark apartment just now.

“You want something to eat?” I ask Zack, trying to concentrate on taking care of him instead of my heartbreak.

“Yep. What ‘you got Auntie Cameron?”

“I’ve got a bit of everything, come look in the fridge with me and we’ll decide what to make you.”

As for me I don’t even think I’m going to get anything in my mouth today. I’m to nerves, yesterday’s scene still very fresh in my mind. Where could Kellan be at this moment? It’s’ almost 8 PM.

I pick Zack up; put him on the Island, facing the fridge. I open the fridge and give I give him a few options.

When he’s chosen, I put him down, just as the door behind me opens. I silently pray its Kellan-Who else has a key to my apartment really-before I turn around. When I finally do, all 6 foot and five inches of my fiancée are standing in front of the door. He looks a little pale, very tired. He is holding a gym bag, it looks full. He’s got on a grey track suit.

“Sorry, I’m so late” He says to Zack and me “I wasn’t here on time to greet my little champ”

“Uncle Kellan!” Zack shrieks, running to Kellan all excited.

Kellan picks Zack up and they both walk to me.

I still feel a little awkward about yesterday. We haven’t talked since he’s mother burst out in tears. I’m probably over examining why she did it. There probably is nothing to it. But I can’t seem to ignore the feeling there’s something more.

When he reaches me, he plants a kiss on my lips, one that feels sincere, one that feels like he really has missed me. Why wouldn’t he have though?

“How was your day?” He asks, already trying to avoid the conversation that we can’t have in front of Zack, but will surely have to have later.

“You left before I was awake and just came home now, so other than being worried sick, my day was alright.” I answer trying to sound as casual as possible so Zack doesn’t think we’re going to start an argument.

Silence; As if he is trying to find the right words to explain why he has been acting so disheveled, and quite frankly mysterious.

“Why don’t you boys settle down in the living room and watch the sports that you love so much, while I prepare us some fish and chips? That sounds nice doesn’t it Zack?”

“Yes it does!” He responds politely “Is there any soccer on uncle Kellan?”

“I’m sure we can find some soccer for you” Kellan says as he walks to the living room with Zack.

Once they’ve left I open the fridge and stare at what’s inside without really seeing in it.

I take out the fish and I get the chips from the frozen side. Suddenly, I wish I was making something that requires a longer cooking time, just to keep me here, alone a tad longer.

Once, I done in the kitchen, we all sit down around the Island table, Both Kellan and I concentrate the small talk on Zack- How well he’s doing in school, his friends and what not.

I put Zack in his pajamas and into the bed in our guest room as soon as he shows signs of being sleepy.

His mom hasn’t called or smsed yet. She must be having fun. That’s at least one thing I’m happy about.

When I get out, Kellan is waiting for me in the living room.

“Where were you all day?”

“New Jersey”

“Doing what Kellan? You could have at least told me where you were going what’s this about?  Your mom crying last night?”

“Babe, I know it sounds a little strange but her reaction really shocked me. I went to visit some friends in Jersey, just clear my head.”

“Why did she want to make sure you and me were real? That it wasn’t a fake relationship?” I’m out of breath at this point, a little scared of the outcome of this conversation. “What did she mean when she said she hoped it wasn’t another scam?”

“Let’s just say I hurt them before, when they thought I was settling in with the love of my life and starting a family with her. I swear Cameron you and me, it’s the real thing. I swear.”

I don’t say anything, I don’t move. Not sure what to say or do. I know he loves me, he must be dealing with his grief over something else.

I’m tired of playing bad cop and asking all these question. I walk to him, and I let him hug me.

“Cam, I love you. Do you doubt that right now?”

“No, I’m just worried about you and your reaction to all this”

“Don’t be” He says plainly.

We stay there, in the living room, in each other’s arms for what seems to be forever. My phone rings and we finally move.

“I’ll meet you in the bedroom” He says before giving me a kiss on the forehead- He still thinks we make a cute couple-and walks off to the main bedroom.

I reach for my phone before it stops ringing. It’s Vanessa and I don’t want to miss what she has to say.

“Babe!” She shrieks into the phone as soon as I pick up “Oh my God you are not gonna believe this date when I replay it for you tomorrow… You are free tomorrow so I can tell you all about this right?! Oh my God this is unbelievable.”

“Don’t worry I’ll be here to listen to this amazing date!”

“Thank you babe, gotta go back to the amazing date. Love you!”

“Keep having fun! I love you too.”

I hang up and walk to the guest room to check on Zack. He is fast asleep. I leave the door to his room open, just to always be able to hear what’s going on in there, and I walk to the main room.

Kellan as well is fast asleep, his clothes lying right there on the floor. Guys are so messy. You provide a laundry basket but they just think it’s better to use the floor. I pick his clothes up and put them in the basket in the bathroom.

When I walk back into the room I realize there are some clothes in his gym bag. I open the bag to be able to put those clothes in the laundry basket as well.

To my surprise there in the bag lie some trousers and a suit, both very smart. I thought he said he went to visit his friends before hitting the gym. What would he need a suit for?
