Chapter.6. = Need to find Courage
The only place where I really and truly could feel safe without him being there was the park. My dad used to take me when I was just a toddler but he didn’t really have time now. There was no one else in the park apart from a girl who was in my class at school. Her name was Vicky and she had red hair and blue eyes, always wearing the usual outfit, jeans and t-shirt. No one really liked her and so she was always by herself. I kind of felt sorry for her.
“Hey.” She looked up as I smiled at her. “Vicky, right?” She nodded as I got up off the swing and went to sit on the bench next to her. “What are you doing here by yourself?”
“I should be asking you that.” She whispered. “Aren’t you meant to be in school?”
“Aren’t you?” She shook her head. “Bunking off then, eh?” She nodded. “I noticed you weren’t there today.”
“No you didn’t, no one does.”
“I just bunked the last few lessons, I felt like being alone.” I dug a hand into my bag and pulled out a candy bar. “Want some?”
“Sure.” She shrugged as I broke a bit off for her. She went to eat some but stopped. “Are you only being nice to me because you have no one else?” I shook my head. “So as soon as Kyle turns up, you’re not gonna run to him.”
“Kyle and I really aren’t friends at the moment.”
“So that’s the reason you’re talking to me?”
“No.” I told her quickly. “I WANT to talk to you Vicky.”
“Thanks Bella, you’re really nice.” I smiled at her. “So, why do you want to be alone?”
“Just stuff that’s been happening.” I muttered under my breath. “I was upset so Kyle talked to me and then Jane the school councillor and then Principal Robert’s but I didn’t talk to any of em so they got annoyed.”
“Why were you upset?” I shrugged, finishing off the rest of the candy bar and tossing the wrapper in the trash can.
“I don’t really want to talk about it.” She nodded, understanding. “Kinda personal if you know what I mean.” She nodded again. “So, what’s up with you then?” She sighed and looked up towards the sky. It was beginning to rain slightly.
“Family stuff.” She sighed again, glancing towards me. “Mainly my dad, he’s...he’s not the sort of dad people would like to have.”
“Does he hit you?” She stared at me with wide eyes. “Sorry but...”
“It’s cool and yes, he does.” My eyes widened then. “Sorry you had to hear that, so, you gonna tell me what’s up with you then?” I shook my head. I couldn’t. “Why not? It can’t be any worse than mine, can it?” I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
“Trust me.” I whispered silently. “It is.” I jumped as I heard my name being called and guess who walks up. Mark. “Hey Mark.” I mumbled under my breath as he wrapped an arm round my shoulder.
“Who’s this?” Vicky asked.
“My...”
“Boyfriend.” Mark cut me off. Liar. He was my ex boyfriend, not current. “So, what have you two girls been talking about?” I shook my head at Vicky, a sign for her not to tell him but she started speaking, no idea what I was on about.
“Bella just told me she was upset really.” She told him. “And we had candy and that’s about it.”
“Did she tell you why she was upset?” Vicky shook her head. “Ok then.” He gave me a subtle pat on the back and I flinched but remained silent. “Well, I should get home now.” He edged closer to my face and his lips brushed against my cheek. “I’ll see ya later babe.” He flicked my nose and walked away in the other direction.
“Have a boyfriend then?”
“Kinda.” I mumbled. “It’s complicated.”
“What can be...?”
“I have to go.” I stood up quickly grabbing my bag. “I’ll see ya tomorrow, ok?”
“But....”
“Bye.” I raced off, swinging my backpack onto my back. I didn’t go home though. I continued to run as fast as my legs could carry me, ignoring Vicky’s calls. I turned left and ran down an alleyway to where a load of men stood. I tried to turn back but one of them grabbed my arm spinning me round. Another got up close in my face and soon all five were surrounding me. I yelled at them not to touch me over and over before finally breaking free from their grasp and running away. My heart started pounding fast underneath my jumper as I slowed down to a halt. I let myself slide down the wall, looking down at my arm where the man had grabbed me. It was bleeding. I tore off my sleeve and dabbed at it, it stinging. I winced but didn’t yell out in pain or anything. I sniffed, holding back my tears as I tied my sleeve round my arm to stop the bleeding. I had to escape Mark somehow but....I just needed to find my courage!
