Four days later and I was getting used to the routine Pheonix performed every day. He was up at six, ate his breakfast, had a shower, got ready for work, came to kiss me on the cheek and then promptly left.

This, naturally, woke me up – at six – every morning.

After hearing the front door close, I dragged myself out of bed. Sighing loudly. I decided to get ready for the day. Although I had plenty of money in my account and was able to help pay rent (no matter how much Pheonix said I didn’t have to), I still wanted to find a job as quickly as possible and get my own place.

I mulled over job possibilities when I was in the shower. Luckily I remembered to bring my own shampoo and conditioner so I didn’t have to use the guys’. The strawberry scent of my shampoo soothed me and wiped away all tiredness, leaving me refreshed and happy.

Pheonix isn’t home until early evening, so I wrapped a fluffy white towel around myself and padded off to find some food. The fridge is stocked with all kinds of stuff as well as pancakes, bread and crumpets piled on top of the toaster. He must have got all this in for me because I know for fact that he always complains about him and Brayden having to constantly get take-aways due to their lack of skills in the kitchen.

Following a long, internal debate, I chose a small pot of honey flavoured greek yoghurt from the fridge and grabbed the carton of orange juice. I settled myself on a kitchen stall and tucked in to my breakfast, my mind wondering over to the fact that, in all the time between Pheonix getting a flatmate and me coming here, I have never met the guy. Sure, I had been told about him, but it’s not the same as meeting someone, is it? I didn’t even know when he was coming back from his business trip.

I finished my yoghurt, took a swig of juice (yes, alright I didn’t get a glass, but I usually do and no-one was here) and cleared it all away. I opened the fridge and a bottle of water fell out, smacking me on the head, before falling on the floor along with my towel.

‘Shit, that hurt.’ I rubbed the top of my head, surprised how much pain a small bottle of water could cause.

‘Excuse me, but who in the fuck are you?’

Okay, a deep, masculine voice was not what I expected to hear.

I whirled around to face an absolutely gorgeous creature. I inhaled sharply whilst taking in his curly blonde hair, melted chocolate eyes, chiselled jaw, broad shoulders, large and muscled body (he was wearing a white work shirt, but it was still obvious), long legs and his feet dressed in expensive shoes.

He was beautiful.

‘Hello? I said who are you and why are you naked in my kitchen?’

‘Hi!’ For crying out loud, I was squeaking! ‘Sorry, I don’t know if Pheonix told you, but he said I could stay for a little…’ Wait.

I looked down at myself.

‘Eek! Ohmygod. Don’t look!’ I dropped to the floor, trying to cover as much as possible, and scrambled to put my towel around me before running into my room and slamming the door. I leant against it, putting a hand up to one of my flaming cheeks.

I guess Brayden had come home.

Fully dressed, I walked slowly out of my room and peered my head around the wall concealing the kitchen.

‘I can see you, you know.’

I jumped and caught the eyes of Brayden, currently sitting on the stall I had vacated, with his chin resting on one of his hands. ‘You going to tell me who you are now?’

‘Erm. Right. Sorry. I’m Raine Everette. Pheonix’s friend. He said that I could stay here whilst I sorted a few things out. I hope that’s okay. I pay rent…’ I trailed off, aware that I was on the verge of extreme babbling. He didn’t say a word. ‘You’re Brayden, right? It’s nice to finally meet you.’

Still, nothing.

‘Look, I’m really sorry about what happened. I didn’t think anyone would be home and Pheonix didn’t say when you would be back so I just assumed that I was going to be alone for the entire day. Can we please forget it happened? Start again?’ It looked like I was doing a lot of forgetting lately.

I watched as Brayden’s eyes raked over my embarrassingly red face, and then down the length of my body. If it were possible, my face went a deeper shade of tomato.

‘Yeah, I’m Brayden.’

I blinked. And then he burst into fits of laughter. Seriously, he was laughing.

And bloody hell, it was a lovely laugh.

All deep and seductive.

‘Er, Brayden? Why are you laughing?’

‘Your face was priceless! And I’ve never seen anyone move so fast!’

Well. Alright. So I made him laugh. That was okay, I guess. Maybe this is a good sign.

‘You did scare the crap out of me.’ I ended up joining in, giggling for ages until we finally calmed down, tears streaming down our cheeks. Then we just looked at each other.

‘So, Raine. How good are you, at cooking?’

His question took me by surprise. ‘Cooking? I’m alright.’ Okay that was a lie. I’m good at cooking. It helps me relax.

‘Well, how would you feel about cooking me brunch?’ He gave me an adorable smile. I grinned back at him.

‘Brunch? Never thought an established lawyer such as yourself would use that word.’

‘What can I say? I’m a man full of surprises.’

‘Indeed you are.’ I muttered under my breath. Louder, I said, ‘What would you like?’

‘Why don’t you just have pancakes?’

‘Because I like waffles.’

‘You don’t like pancakes?’

‘I never said that.’

So you do like pancakes?’

‘I never said that either.’

‘Ugh, fine.’

I banged around the kitchen, trying to find everything I needed whilst Brayden just watched me intently. I grew uncomfortable under his burning gaze. ‘Do you have a waffle thinga-majigy?’

‘Yeah, I’ll get it for you.’ He chuckled.

He walked over to me, never taking his eyes off my own and I moved back slightly, bumping into the granite worktop behind me. Brayden came so close we were practically touching chests, reached both hands up either side of my head – bringing us even closer – before opening a cupboard I obviously wouldn’t have been able to reach given my small height.

‘Here you go.’

‘You could have just told me to move.’

‘Your welcome.’

I took the waffle-maker off him and sidled away, making myself busy.

‘Tell me about yourself.’ I looked at him.

‘There’s not much to tell.’ I shrugged, carrying on with my egg cracking.

‘What things do you need to sort out?’ he queried, referring to my earlier garbling.

‘You know, the usual when it comes to moving. House, job, things like that.’

‘Why did you move?’ I froze for a fraction of a second.

‘I just wanted a change, y’know? I missed Pheonix and Mallorie – I don’t know if you’ve met her yet? – and I just didn’t enjoy my job anymore. So I thought, why not?’

‘What was your job?’

I smiled at him. ‘A lawyer, actually.’

‘Wow. So you think you’ll look for a job at mine and Pheonix’s firm? I could put in a good word and you know Pheonix would aswell.’

‘Thanks, but I want to get it on my own. You know as well as I do what a tough occupation it is, and I want to show them that I can get there without help.’

‘No problem, buy just say the word if you change your mind.’

‘Thankyou Brayden.’ I said quietly. I wasn’t even sure if he heard.

We sat in comfortable silence for a while as I finished his waffles. When I was done, I placed them in front of him with some cream from the fridge, syrup, honey and even chocolate sauce I’d found in one of the cupboards. I even cut up some strawberries, which I helped him eat of course, and started washing up all the appliances I used.

Five minutes later I turned around to find his plate empty, and a grin the size of China of his face.

‘That was good, thanks Rainbow.’

I raised my eyebrows at the name. ‘Rainbow?’

‘Yeah. It suits you better.’

‘Okay…’ I turned around, hiding my blush.

‘You could tell me not to call you that, but you should know I won’t listen.’

I laughed softly. ‘No, it’s fine. I like it.’
