I opened my eyes to see one of the guards, holding up both hands to block the strike with their electrified club. The Quwallie’s eyes narrowed as he stared into the guard’s black tinted visor that was built into the helmet, trying to see who would betray them. He stepped back and raised his sword in a stance. The guard tossed their club to the ground. It was nearly bent in half from the force and I was surprised it hadn’t cut all the way through.
Vaughan stood up from his chair and faced us. “You must be the other sync ring.” He puffed again and peered hard at the traitorous guard, “What do you want?”
The rogue guard took something from inside their armor and held it out in their palm for Vaughan to see. A hologram popped up with a picture of Vaughan’s face next to writing I couldn’t read.
Vaughan looked taken aback. “Crux bounty hunters?” He tried to regain his posture, “This isn’t the first time I’ve been hunted. You’ll never make it out of here alive.”
The Quwallie attacked the rogue guard but the guard was ready. They swiftly withdrew a knife hidden within their armor, and parried the Quwallie’s strikes. I felt like I was back in the arena, but watching expert fighters battle each other. I had never witnessed such a skillful fight before.
No longer the target, I scrambled away from the two warriors.
Clink! Clink! Clink! Clink! Knife and sword clashed. No way was I going to interfere with that battle. Vaughan told the other guards to jump in but every time they tried they were either kicked out or thrown aside by the rogue guard.
When it looked like the rogue guard was winning, Vaughan went back to his chair and pressed a button. His face held an annoyed grimace but the growing beads of sweat on his forehead was proof there was no denying the rogue guard’s skill.
The guard must’ve seen him push the button out of the corner of their eye because the lights suddenly blackened for a moment. When they came back on, their knife was pressed against Vaughan’s neck.
“It’s useless,” Vaughan uttered, “more guards will be here in less than a minute and this place will be surrounded.”
The Quwallie took a step forward but the rogue guard pressed the knife deeper into Vaughan’s neck. A stream of blood trickled down the blade, stopping the Quwallie almost instantly.
No one moved. Then out of nowhere, a different guard grabbed my arm and dragged me across the room toward the glass window.
The room shook violently as bombs went off just outside the door. I cowered against the wall as parts of the rock ceiling began to crack and fall. Guards were scurrying away from falling debris. Suddenly it got darker outside. Everything happened so fast, I wasn’t sure what was going on.
Just outside the glass wall, a large ship was hovering. It emitted a red laser in the shape of a square on the glass, and without turning around, the rogue guard back-kicked it and the glass popped out and plummeted to the arena ground. The crowd was screaming and fleeing the stands.
I considered making a run for it while it was chaotic, but the other guard grabbed my arm again and dragged me to the open window. Something shot out from the ship. It was large cables that wrapped around me and the guard, pulling us toward the ship. I saw another cable shoot out and wrap around Vaughan and the rogue guard. As we were drawn closer to the ship I saw the Quwallie run out of the open window and jump onto the rogue guard. Their cable jolted as he clung on.
The ship swayed before fully taking off, building speed quickly. I saw the rogue guard fighting the Quwallie on the cables as we neared the ship. We were thrust on a wall of some sort of red gel substance that slowed down our speed before the cables carried us .inside the ship and then released us.
The guard that was with me took off their helmet, grabbed something off the wall and pointed it at the gel wall we just came through. To my surprise it was a young girl and she looked strangely familiar. She motionless, waiting for Vaughan to fall through the gel wall, and he did just a moment later.
“Hello there,” said the girl mockingly as she pointed a pistol-looking weapon at him. Then she spoke into the air, “Tammy, our cargo has arrived.”
A different girl’s voice echoed throughout the ship, “Understood.”
A circle in the ship’s floor opened up.
“Well, get in!” the girl ordered Vaughan.
He didn’t seem to understand what she was saying but he understood her gesture. He sneered, then turned around to look in the hole and the girl kicked him in. I wasn’t sure how far down it was but I heard him moaning at the bottom from the fall. Then the circle floor closed again.
Someone else came through the gel wall. It was the winner of the cable fight, the rogue guard. They took off their helmet as well, revealing another familiar face.
“It’s you…” I mumbled.
Akiko frowned, “Who else would it be?”
The girl’s voice spoke through the ship again, “Please brace yourself; we are leaving this planet’s atmosphere.”
The ship jittered for a moment, and then came to a sudden halt. I almost fell over but the girl who pulled me into the ship caught me. I was beginning to feel the full effects of my earlier battle.
“Rei, why did you bring him along?” Akiko asked the girl.
“They would’ve killed him if we left him there!” Rei replied, hugging my arm.
Looking at her up close I remembered where I’d seen her before, “You’re that girl from earlier… I gave you my water.”
She had a big smile on her face, “You remember me!”
Her hair was long and brown and her eyes were a pretty hazel. I guessed she was a maybe a year younger than me.
Akiko looked down at her hand, “Oh yeah… I forgot to turn these off…” she fiddled with the sync ring on her wrist.
All of a sudden, I was hit with so much immense pain that I fell instantly to the ground. I was in so much pain I couldn’t even breathe and then my vision began to fade.
The last thing I heard was, “Oops…”
