I walked up to the platform, stepping up to the mike. I looked at all the people in the crowd and took a deep breath.
“Kaya was my best friend, we’d known each other since we were 11 years old. She was the first person to talk to me when I arrived. The first time we met, I was stood alone in the playground, just
kind of awkwardly standing there. But then I looked up and saw this redhead marching up to me, she stopped right in front of me and said ‘from now on we’re going to be friends’. I laughed
nervously. “And she was right from that day we’d been friends, everyone was her friend. She was kind, loving and beautiful. She connected with people in ways I can’t understand. She made every day
count, always having some kind of adventure planned because as she used to say ‘enjoy every day because you never know when it will be your last’.” Tears slowly rolled down my face. “Now Kaya might
be gone but she will forever be in our memories. I love you Kaya, rest in peace”. With that sentence, I broke down, tears flooding from my eyes, loud sobs escaping my lips.
I walked off the platform while everyone clapped. Why the hell would you clap at a time like this? It’s a funeral, someone’s dead for gods sake. I need to get out of here.
Instead of taking my seat I kept walking forward, straight out of the main doors. The cold air whipped me in the face, aah British weather, this would normally irritate me but today it was quite
refreshing. I took in a deep breath, trying to calm down. I sat on a step while I tried to regain composure.
People began making out of the church to the cemetery across the road, completely ignoring my presence. I watched as her coffin was carried out and laid next to a big hole in the ground. The priest
began speaking, while guilt washed through me. They began to lower the coffin into the ground. At that moment I hated myself, it should be me in that coffin, I deserve it. You want to know why?
Because I killed her. I killed my best friend.
