Lockdown
Damien sat in his ancient history class staring up at the flickering image of an archaeological dig. Despite enjoying the subject and having chosen it the previous year as well he was finding today’s class particularly boring. This however could be attributed to their casual teacher who regardless of their protests was showing them a film they had already had to watch twice.
Damien gazed around the classroom. It was part of the second storey of the school and roughly rectangular in shape with windows on either side one side pointing to the pathway on the school side while the others pointed toward the nearby town with blue skies and a thin snaking river cutting across paddocks and lines of trees. Unfortunately these views were currently obscured from view by thick grey blinds. He glanced at his watch for the third time that minute, eagerly awaiting the bell to ring in 12 minutes time. His prayers finally were answered.
A high pitched ‘ding-ing’ noise erupted above his head, drowning out all trail of thought. The students around him rose unknowing of the bells early send off due to the long lesson. They packed their books into bags and crammed items into pencil cases while the bell rang above their heads.
Damien although disturbed by the bells early coming began to move with the flock and pack away his things. However the students around him began to stop their slow shuffle to the door. Something was wrong. The bell was still ringing and had been doing so for a full 20 seconds. The confused students began to turn to one another and even the teacher seeking enlightenment as to their situation.
They had never had anything like this happen before. They had practiced fire drills but those were ten short 2-second bursts which meant they had to exit in a safe and orderly manner to either the road outside the school or the football oval.
Everyone froze as the bell continued to ring for another 20 seconds Damian among various others held their breaths during this time. Until finally a deafening silence met their ears. It had to be the loudest sound he ever heard, until finally the teacher remembered their role and stood up in front of the class just in front of the closed blinds.
“all right students we all know what that bell means” she announced to the class “a lockdown”
This was met by a sea of murmurs as students began to put their own spin on things like old ladies sharing neighbourhood gossip instead or year 11’s.
“hush children” she spoke slightly condescendingly “no need to panic I’m sure it’s just a drill seeing as the government has begun to crack down on schools not practising drills in all emerg-“ at that point the window behind her was shattered and a lifeless claw dragged her out through the gaping hole, while the students could only watch her eyes bulge with fear as she disappeared out of view behind the blind.
