Darkness surrounded me from every corner. I had absolutely no idea where I was. The room was silent. I could only hear the petrified heart beats coming from my chest. I tried so hard to remember what happened, but nothing was quite coming back to me.
Finally, I heard the quiet chirps of birds nearby and I saw a tiny crack of light through the wall. Clearly, it was morning.
I let out a few very long breaths, to calm myself down a bit. I sat up from where I was lying. I felt around to get a better idea where I was located. I felt a cushion beneath me. It was damp and not very comfortable. It also felt kind of dirty like it was older. I inhaled a very musky smell, like an old basement. I felt something running down my forehead. It had a liquid like texture. Was the ceiling leaking? I felt my forehead and there seemed to be a bump and more of the liquid was pouring out.
Was I bleeding? I thought, quite confused.
I heard a little pitter patter coming from the right side of the concealed room. I tried to jump up, but I had something on my ankles, holding me in place. I felt around at my feet.
Were they chains? They felt like chains. I thought again, just as confused.
The pitter patter came back, closer this time. I looked around, cautiously at my surroundings, but again, nothing seemed to pop up.
I heard a quiet spring of the cushion next to me.
There was actually something in here with me. I thought with fear.
I heard a "purr" like sound coming from the thing beside me. I didn't know if I should reach out to touch it or not.
Instead, it touched me. As it turned out, it wasn't a thing. It was a cat.
I felt it's ruffled hair on it's back clear to it's long tail. The feline's fur was kind of greasy and dirty, but I didn't mind. I was just happy not to be so alone, anymore. I pet it some more on it's small, dainty face and around it's ears. It let out a small meow and it made me smile a little. I love animals and this cat and I had a connection.
"Are you a boy or girl?" I asked curiously. It let out another quiet meow in confirm.
"I'm just going to call you a him because I have a boy back home. His name is Cheddar. I know what your thinking, but don't laugh!" I said with a little giggle.
"We named him Cheddar because he is yellow like Cheddar Cheese and he likes cheese, a lot." I said remembering my little kitten at home.
"Do you know where I am?" I asked him hopefully, but, he didn't have must to say back. Just that cute little meow.
"I didn't think so." I said in disappointment.
Suddenly, I heard a little creaking noise coming from behind me. The cat jumped down and I was alone again, but not for long.
"Hey honey, how you feelin'?" I heard a man's voice not too far from me.
"Who are you?" I asked with fear. I heard rattling, now farther away.
"Are you hungry, sugar because I made dinner for us?" the man asked in a redneck accent.
Then it all came back to me. The fireworks, the bean field, the hide and seek accident, the creepy man picking me up and taking me. It was the man with the Southern accent.
"You're the guy who took me to this place. You're the guy with the redneck accent that was driving that piece of crap Chevy. Where am I?" I asked, trying to sound tough.
"Baby, just calm down now, it's alright," he explained in a firm voice. I still couldn't see him.
"Don't call me that!" I shouted back angrily.
"Where are Ammara and Catrina?" I asked with a squeak in my voice.
"Oh, their safe and sound. Completely unharmed, Darlin' don't you worry," he said, back sounding confident.
"If their safe, then what am I?" I asked, taking a breath.
"Your just goin' have to figure that out on your own, sweetheart," he said laughing.
I thought for a few minutes, trying to take in the information this creep was throwing at me.
"So, Farrah are you hungry or not?" the man asked impatiently.
"Wait. How do you know my name?" I asked in a confused tone.
I heard the same heavy foot steps as I heard when I was taken, coming toward me. The man stopped in the light that was coming throw the open door. The man was tall with a brown go-tee on his big dirty face. He was skinny, but still muscular. He was tan and his teeth were yellow and crocked. His blue jeans were ripped and his red plaid long-sleeved shirt was covered in dirt. I took a real hard look at him. Then it hit me.
"David? Uncle David? I thought you were in prison!" I said, now a bit more terrified.
"No, no, no! It's Dad to you, you got it?" he stated furiously.
"What? No, your David. I'm not that stupid!" I said back, gripping the dirty blanket beside me.
"It was David. Not anymore. You are gonna call me Dad because this is my house and these are my rules. Do you understand?" David asked icley.
"Yes." I confirmed, not looking at his hideous face.
"Alright then. We're gonna live a long happy life together, understand? he asked, a bit more cheerfully.
Wait, I'm not going home?" I asked, now a tear falling down my cheek.
"This is your home now, got it?" he asked quickly.
I looked down at my ankles. They were chains. I nodded, still not looking at him.
"Okay then, it's settled." David said crossing his arms.
He walked over to where I was sitting in terror. He sat down with me.
"I love you, Farrah. Nothin' is gonna change that," he said leaning toward me.
I shut my eyes because I knew what was going to happen. David pressed his dirty, disgusting lips on my cheek and wiped the tears off after words.
"I'll be back. I got some uh....... things to take care of." David said, getting up of the bed.
"I'll leave the light on for ya," he said again.
I still had my eyes shut as I heard the foot steps to the door. It finally shut and I heard him lock it.
I opened my eyes and looked around. I was in a tiny shack with no windows. I looked behind me. I saw a small kitchen and a small door. I took another long breath. The room stunk really bad like something died here. I shivered just thinking of it. I took another look at my feet. The chains were digging into my ankles like crazy. I looked around for a key, but unfortunately, there wasn't one. I inhaled a few times to slow down my heart, but it wasn't working. Then I remembered the cat.
Was it his cat? I wondered.
"Here kitty!" I shouted, looking around for the feline. It didn't work, so I tried again.
I heard a pitter patter coming from above me. I looked up and the cat was peeping his head through a hole in the ceiling.
"Hey kitty, there you are." I said smiling.
He jumped clear down from the roof to the creaky floor. He meowed his cute little meow and jumped on the bed. It felt so nice to have this cat here. It made a total difference from when I was alone. He made me--- feel better.
"I need to get out of here. I wish you could help me." I said sighing.
The cat jumped off my bed and tip-toed over to the same spot he landed when he jumped into the room. He looked up at the hole and purred.
"Wow, you actually had a good idea." I said laughing.
"I could maybe get up there, but how?" I wondered out loud.
I saw the cat head over toward a big cabinet and rubbed against it.
"Hey, you're right. That cabinet looks moveable." I stated, grinning.
"If I could get out of these chains, I could move the cabinet underneath the hole and wiggle out. That hole looks big enough that I could possibly squeeze through and escape." I said cheerfully.
"Thanks cat. I owe you one." I said smiling.
"You know what? Once I escape, I'll take you home where you can have a real family, okay?" I said looking at him, thankfully. He purred and jumped back up on the bed. I scratched his head and smiled.
"We just have to get that key."
