Chapter 15

A Hurtful Comment

The last day before going back home for Christmas seemed to go on forever. While Hugo and Archie were outside having a snow ball fight, Lily, James, Rose and Diana were up in the Gryffindor commen room. Grace was lying on the couch that Lily was sitting beside. She was staring into the fire, thinking. Last night she finished the book. She didn't know what to think.
It was hard to believe that all the stuff in there was true. All the things they did and things they went through. It was weird to think that no matter how hard she tried she would never live up t them. That was impossible.
Lily suddenly realized that Grace was singing. Singing something she had never heard before.

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Lily looked up at her.
"What were you singing?" Lily asked curiously.
"Silent Night. It's a Christmas song." Grace answered. Lily's expression of confussion must have been obvious because she quickly added. "In German."
That was one thing that Lily didn't like about Grace. She knew these tiny little details in life that you didn't need to know and it made her smart in a way. Maybe that's what they learn in Muggle schools. Well Lily would never know, would she.
"I still can't believe they just left." James suddenly said from the comfy chair across from Lily. "I mean really."
"James, calm down." Rose called from the window. "People are in here too."
"Yeah but what type of lousy parents promise that they will explane something and then they just run off."
"James, McGonagall told them to-" Grace started but was suddenly caught off by Lily.
"They're not lousy! How dare you call them lousy!" She belted at him. He looked taken back but didn't back down.
"They are so! They promised-"
"You don't know what they've been through! You can't say anything!" Lily stood up, followed by James, and pulled her wand out of her pocket. "Flipendo!"
James flew back, flipped once in mid air, and hit the wall, falling down. It was a few moments before Rose rushed to him.
"James! James, are you all right?" Lily saw from where she was standing that he was moving.
She suddenly started to think about what just happened. She felt so angry she felt her blood boil. She didn't know why. Maybe it was because James just didn't actually know how much their parents did for them at Hogwarts. Even so he shouldn't have called them lousy.
Lily looked round at Grace. Her hair was covering her eyes but Lily could see Grace watching her. She was looking at Lily's eyes, like they were foreign.
"You're just lucky he's not seriously hurt." Rose said to Lily. She saw that there was a little bit of hatered in her eyes. Lily couldn't take any more, she ran out the room.
She flew down corridors and hallways, tears streaming from her eyes. She now didn't have a clue why she was angry with him.
She turned a corner and bumped into someone. She looked up and saw Teddy looking down at her, Albus beside him.
"Lily?" Teddy asked. She wrapped her arms around him.
"I didn't mean it." She said. "I didn't think he would die.'
Teddy and Albus looked at each other, panic all over their faces.
"Who died?" Albus asked.
"No one but he could have."Lily murrmered.
"Lily, you aren't making any sence." Teddy said, hugging her back.
"James nearly died. He hit the wall but he's OK. But it's still my fault." She said a bit loudly. Even these two not understanding was frustrating.
Teddy said something to Albus then told Lily he had to go. Instead of Teddy she started hugging Albus.
"Don't worry Lily." Albus said. "It will be alright.
"How do you know?" She asked. "You don't know what mum and dad will do tomorrow."
Albus didn't know what to say. They just stayed there, hugging. Lily was looking out the window as she did this. The snow drifted past and she could see people having fun in the snow. She couldn't exactly see Hugo and Archie, but they were there somewhere.
And just by the Forbidden Forest something moved. Lily didn't quite know what it was, but it moved, sterring the snow. She kepted her eyes on that spot and saw it moved again. This time further. It seemed to run down to the lake and along the shore.
Maybe it's just one of the pupils, Lily told herself. Or maybe Professor Lovegood.
But she knew that she was just kidding herself.
