Chapter 4

The First Day

James woke on Monday morning to hear rain drops tapping on the window by his bed. It felt abit a cold today. It looked cold. James didn't like cold.
As he looked up he saw Lewis and Marcus having a pillow fight, throwing their pillows at each other from opposite sides of the room. Lewis and James had always been friends. Ever since their first ride on the Hogwarts Express. James had the imprecation that that was the place you made your friends.
Marcus, on the other hand. only became friends with them was because they were the only other Gryffindor boys in their year. He was fun at times but never really wanted to join in with their mischief.
"Hey, James." Said Lewis as James got out of bed.
"Hey." He answered back sleepily. They all got dressed in their robes and walk down the spiral staircase into the Gryffindor common room.
On the sofa were two girls. One was Lily, her hands over her head. The other was Diana, James best friend from the girls in his year.
"What's up?" James asked as he sat down next to Lily.
"My head hurts." She said weakly.
"And she's it's defiantly not a normal thing." Said Diana. " She says it's been hurting all morning since three in the morning."
James frowned.
"Well that's not good on the first day of school, is it?" Said Lewis. "The teachers would think your skiving on the first day of school!"
"Oh shut up, Lewis!" Diana shot at him. "I'll take her to the hospital wing. You guys go and have breakfast."
"Thanks Diana." James said as all of them got up and left.
When they got down to the Great Hall it was mostly full. James started to walk in when someone pulled him to the side.
"Where's Lily?" Albus asked.
"Um, hospital wing with Diana." James answered, abit surprised. He added "Sore head." At the look on Albus's face.
"Oh. Well if you see her could you give her this?" He held up a quill. It was green and had a little silver bit at the top. On it had the little initials that said ASP
"Wasn't this the quill Grandad Weasley give you for your birthday?" James asked.
"Um, yeah." Albus said, getting a little impatient.
"You can't give it to her!"
"I'll change the initials!" Albus took out his wand and tapped the silver part. The initials quickly changed to LLP.
"But this is a present from Grandad!" James objected as Albus walked towards the Slytherin table.
"I've got loads of quills from him! Just give it to her!"
Before James could say anything else Albus had already walked out of earshot. He started to wonder why he wanted Lily to have it so much.
He sat down next to Lewis who was with Rose, who was with Hugo and Archie. Another boy sat with Hugo that James didn't know. He had bright brown hair and a button nose.
"Hey!" Hugo said. Archie was looking at his juice.
"What's this?" He asked uncertainly.
"Pumpkin juice." The brown haired boy answered. Hugo must have seen James looking at him.
"This is Isaac." Hugo said. "Isaac, this is my cousin, James." They both gave a smile at each other.
They all started to talk about what school would be like this year. They talked about the new Potions teacher, Professor Hitchens, whether the Quidditch teams would be good and if the Dueling Club would still be on. By the time they got onto the subject of the Hogsmead trips Professor Longbottom had come to give out time tables.
"Hello, Neville" Hugo said.
"It's Professor Longbottom, Weasley." He said with a smile. Hugo looked taken back. "I'm kidding, but at least call me sir."
"OK, sir."
He handed James his time table, which didn't look good, then walked on down the rest of the table.
"Well I have Divination first. Better get going." James said as he looked at his watch. They all said goodbye.
Divination seemed to go on for ages. Everyone asked each other why Trelawney still taught there. James asked himself why he put his name down for this class. Like last year she kept saying he was heading for certain death.
"She did that with me too." His dad had said the year before. "But look at me. I'm still alive. You'll be fine." James just thought it was a Potter thing.
The next time he saw anyone was the lesson before lunch, Care Of Magical Creatures. He liked this class because he got to be with Diana and Professor Lovegood was teaching it.
"Hows Lily?" He asked Diana once they got to work on writing out the ways to identify werewolves.
"She went to her classes but she had to go to the hospital wing at break to get some potion."
James was relieved when lunch came. Werewolves didn't interest James that much.
Diana, James and Lewis had already got stuck in when Lily, Hugo, Archie and Isaac turned up.
"How you feeling?" James asked her.
"Hmm." Was all she said, helping herself to some toast.
"How was Divination?" Lewis asked.
"I'm going to die soon, again." James couldn't help but laugh under his breath.
"I couldn't have been that bad." Said a chubby looking boy who sat next to Lily. All the first years looked at him but the others just said "Hi."
"Well we got Defence next." Said Lewis, looking at his time table.
"Hello!" Lily said. "Who's this?" She jerked a thumb at the chubby boy who was helping himself to some toast.
"Oh yeah, sorry." James said. "That's Teddy."
Hugo and Lily both made understanding noises. Archie and Isaac still needed help.
"I'm a friend." He said. "And a Metamorphmagus." Archie was still confused but didn't push the matter.
"Why are you here?" Lily asked.
"I come and visit you guys alot." Teddy said as three Slytherins walked up to them.
"Hey, it's the Potters!" Said one boy. The other two laughed.
"What do you want?" James asked.
"Well me and the boys were wondering if you have a scar yet." The other two boys laughed but none of the Gyffindors or Teddy found it funny.
"How's that funny?" Lily asked.
"Well look boys!" The first one said again. "They still don't know!".
"Still don't know what, Goyle?" James said, standing up.
"Still don't know what a pathetic liar your father is." At these words James shot a spell at them. Goyle was quick and dodged it but it hit the one on his right. They all started to run out of the Great Hall with everyone watching, James following.
"My dad's not a liar!" He shouted at him as they ran outside. He shot another spell, hitting Goyle in the back. He flew into the air and hanged there by his ankle.
"Oh yes he is!" Goyle shot back.
"Potter! What do you think you re doing?" James turned to see Professor Murch, the Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher walking up to them.
"I..." But James didn't know what to say.
"Detention! Come to my office at nine o'clock tonight!" She turned to Goyle and whipped her wand, letting him down, then walked off.
"Well Potter." Said Goyle as James started to walk away. "Have fun!"
