Chapter 2: Lost Control
I woke up at six. Keith was already up, as usual. He emerged from the bathroom, clad only in his boxers. I giggled. "What?" he asked. Not meaning to boast, but Keith is extremely muscular. He was in the wrestling team when he was in West Seattle High. The three of us moved after the accident and we were tranferred to James A. Garfield High School. He'd quit all sports and opted for the choir. Can't complain. I guesst he reason he quit was because Dad had wanted him to take part in sports.
Did I mention his boxers had little pink hearts on them? I couldn't stop giggling. He looked down and realised what I was giggling at. He laughed and pounced on me. "Not funny, Kayla." he whispered, mock menacingly. His fingers slid through mine and he pinned me to the bed. I was completely under him. "It's ridiculously funny." I giggled, trying to breathe. I know, I know, this seems wrong, but we're just really close siblings. He let go of my hands and started tickling me. "Hey!" I shouted, twisting under him. He laughed at me. That's not fair. He knew I was ticklish. I laughed, trying to push him off me. "Keith, get off of me." I laughed breathlessly. "Fine." Keith said once and got off me. I laid there, gasping for breath.
After a few minutes, I got up and headed for the toilet. I closed the door but it accidentally slammed shut with a bang. That very sound stopped me cold. The memories were coming back, flashing through my mind, again and again. The lorry colliding with the Jeep. Dad... DAD!!! I clamped my hands to my ears and shut my eyes, sliding onto the floor. That did nothing to stop the images that kept coming. God, where did I put my pills? I struggled to get up and grabbed the sink to pull myself up. Igot a glass and turned on the tap to drink. Just that what came out wasn't water; it was blood. I was hallucinating the whole thing. Yet, I couldn't convince myself that this wasn't real. I dropped the glass, which shattered as it hit the ground. It was like when I was thrown out of the window. Blood, glass, pain.
The door slammed open and Keith stood at the doorway. He must've heard the glass shattering. "Kayla!" he shouted. I looked at him, tears dribbling down my cheeks. "Make it stop. Make everything stop." I whimpered. I noticed my leg was bleeding as a piece of glass had lodged itself into my flesh. I couldn't feel any pain. Keith swept the broken glass that was all over the floor aside with his foot and reached for me. "Kayla, take my hand." he ordered. I did so. "Close your eyes and think about me, Kayla. Think about how much I love you. Calm down." he whispered, pulling me to him. I rested my head against his bare chest and obeyed. I began to calm down. I felt him run his hand through my hair. "Better?" he whispered. I nodded. "I'll go get the first-aid box-and your pills. Can you wash up on your own?" he asked. I nodded again. He sighed. "Keep the door open. I'll need to keep an eye on you." he continued. I started to the feel the stinging pain on my foot. I limped back into the toilet and washed up.
He was sitting on his bed when I was done. He helped me to the bed and pulled my injured left leg onto his lap. With a pair of tweezers, he pulled out the glass. I clenched my hands into fists from the pain. "I'm sorry." he said. He applied a foul-smelling lotion on the wound, just as Mum walked past our room on the way downstairs. "Kayla? What happened?" she demanded. "I...I lost control." I said, shaking my pill bottle at her. She swallowed. "Do you want to go for counselling again?" she asked worriedly. "NO!" I shouted, jolting up. "Ow." I seethed as Keith's nails scraped the opening of the wound. "Don't move." he ordered. "Okay, I won't send you back. Do you want to go to school?" she asked. "Of course, Mum." I laughed. "I'm not that injured." I continued. Keith looked grim when he let go of my leg after bandaging it."Are you sure?" Mum asked worriedly. I nodded. "Okay, I'll go make breakfast, okay?" Mum asked. I smiled. "Yes, please." I said. She walked out of sight.
I let out a deep sigh and buried my face in my hands. Keith's arm wrapped around my waist. "Are you okay?" he asked. I shook my head. "I'm tired of pretending." I muttered. "Pretending?" he asked. I froze when I realised what I said. "I'm hungry, you wanna come with?" I changed the subject, trying to twist out of his grip. "Kayla Destiny Hathaway, are you saying you were acting when Mum asked you if you wanted to stop counselling? You purposely wanted to stop counselling and treatment even when you were not recovered?" Keith demanded, his grip on me tightening. I tried to get up. "Let me go." I said as calmly as I could, looking at him in the eyes. "No." he growled. "Why did you lie? Act like eveything is okay when it's obviously not?" he asked. "Do you think I was that ignorant? I knew that when Dad died, we wouldn't have enough money just with Mum working. I knew that. You guys forced me to go for counselling, I went quietly. If you want me to go for counselling again, let me tell you, I'm going to run away." I growled. His eyes widened. "Let me go, now." I said and managed to pull out of his grip. I walked downstairs, fully aware of his eyes that were trained to my back.
