She couldn't help it. She hated the cold. She held onto Shane, her teeth chattering. She pressed her face against his chest. “You never did tell me why you have it so cold.” she murmured.

He chuckled and ran his hands up her shirt. She sighed at the warmth. “I do not feel temperature.” he murmured. “Though really it is only to annoy you until you sign the paper.” he added.

She would have glared, but she didn't want to move her face into the cold air. “Forget it Shane.” she murmured. She ran her hands up the front of his shirt. Her fingers slowly began to thaw.

Shane softly rubbed her back. She shivered then pressed her feet to his legs. “This isn't fair.” she murmured sleepily. Shane pulled her face from his chest and pressed his lips to hers. She whimpered. “You're using my hormones against me.” She tightened her hands into fists against his chest. She kissed him back before whispering. “Cheater.”

Shane pulled his hands from her shirt and grabbed her shoulders. “This is not a game or competition Delilah.” He moved his lips down to her neck. “You have no idea how serious this is. This is not a story where the innocent girl gets what she wants. I told you I'm evil. And I haven't had nearly enough time to change that.” He rolled her onto her back. “I am a man, I like sex.” He ran his hand down her leg until he reached her calf. Then with a hard jerk he hitched her leg against his hip.

Delilah's gasp was cut off when Shane's lips came crushing down onto hers. She murmured protests and pushed at his chest. “Shane!” she breathed, terror in her voice.

“Just so we're clear who is in control.” he whispered. “I will not be pushed around, and I will not take orders from you. You belong to me, Delilah. I'll do whatever I please with you, and I will be giving the orders.”

“I didn't mean-”

“Yes, you did.” he interrupted. “I have work to do, I'll turn on the heat.”

Of course, like always, he was gone in an instant. Delilah was ashamed of herself. Not only was she acting like a...well, like a horny teenager, but she was teasing him because of her own mixed emotions. That wasn't fair to him, and as she predicted, it was only going to get her into rated R movie trouble.

But she felt this overwhelming sex lust and wanted Shane back. Shame, shame she thought. She rolled over in bed, unable to sleep now. Shane didn't sleep, she remembered. So neither did Charles, but would he be at the desk all night too?

She stood quietly, walked out of the room. She'd never seen the school, and she could use a walk, it might help her sleep. She hugged herself and drifted into Shane's office, walked to the door. She reached out to the handle, gave it a turn, and found it was locked. Huh, she'd never tried to walk out of the room at night.

She gave it another jerk, just in case, still locked.

“The school is far too dangerous for you to be wandering around.” Shane murmured.

She actually didn't jump, but her heart did skip a beat. She turned around and faced his tall figure, his annoyed eyes. “Then why don't you accompany me? Maybe we could both use a walk. And I have a debt to pay, you can show me what needs to be done, give me a tour around the school. Oh, and Shane, I've been kind of scared to say anything, but I haven't eaten in three days.”

He nodded. “You've either been asleep or continually questioning me. With all that's happened I've forgotten your human needs.” he sighed, took her hand. “I think a walk will do us both some good.”

He took the door handle and opened it easily. She decided not to ask, it wasn't important anyway.

Delilah snacked on a muffin as she and Shane walked down the halls. “This is the library over here, you're welcome to it of course, as long as you have me with you.”

She nodded. “Thanks.”

“You will from time to time be coming to help Mr. Landlier, with whatever he may need done.”

She bit her lip. “So how it is going to work? Are you just going to follow me around every day from now on? Don't you have a lot of work?”

“I'll take care of those things while you sleep.” he explained.

“So it looks like we'll be spending a lot of time together.” she murmured. Not much good had happened since she'd met him.

He smiled and took her hand in his. “Is that a problem?”

“Well,” she began as she wove her fingers through his. “You are kind of demanding, and rude, a little obnoxious too.”

“You are right, I am. But all for good reason.” he flashed her one of his scary and charming smiles.

“Right, the whole immortal thing and me being a pain in your ass.” she replied, her voice light and joking.

He chuckled. “That is a big part of it.” he agreed.

“Why is Charles such a jack ass Shane?” she asked curiously. “Why is he so mean and depressed all the time?”

“He lost his innocence.” he explained. “She left him.”

She absorbed that for a moment. Poor Charles. She huffed out a breath, decided to move on.

“Shane, did you ever have a family?” she asked, then picked a chocolate chip from the muffin and placed it in her mouth.

“I don't recall that I ever did.” he replied. “I'm very old. Nothing of my human life has stayed with me over the years.”

“Oh. Well, you're welcome to my family any time you want, that is...” she stopped herself, decided that now wasn't the time to fight with him.

He sighed. “I did not mean it when I said I didn't care what you wanted. I do, Delilah. The entire situation here is delicate though, many precautions must be made. Do you really want them involved in this?”
“No, but I have been missing now for two days, and being eighteen, there isn't anything they can do really to find me. I am their child Shane, put yourself in their shoes. What if your baby girl went missing, your only daughter? No matter how old. For all they know I've been kidnapped, raped, sliced up, and now lay somewhere dead in a ditch.”

Shane pursed his lips. “That seems a bit over dramatized.”

“It happens Shane, all the time. By humans, crazy men and women who had a dysfunctional life and think others should pay for it with their lives. Parents have to hope for the best and expect the worse. I'm surprised they haven't come to the school looking for me, or even called.”

He sighed. “They've called a few times actually. Charles told them you never arrived.”

She sighed. “God Shane, they're probably freaking out. I'm only just out of highschool, you know. It's not like I've been on my own for awhile. Not to mention I've always been very open with my parents, and I always let them know where I was. They probably think I'm dead, great.”

“Perhaps that is for the best.” he replied, his voice sounding insulted now.

“No, it's not. They deserve to know I'm alive and...somewhat safe. I'm their child Shane, they have that right.”

“I'll be the judge of that-”

“Dammit Shane!” she burst out. “Who are you to make a decision like that? You have no idea what they're going through right now. I know you're evil, but I was sure you weren't the kind of monster to take someone's child away from them.”

“You are the monster if you are willing to risk their lives for simple peace of mind.” Shane replied, his voice low and even.

“Peace of mind? You think that's what it is? For someone as old as you are you think you would know better. They spent the last eighteen years of their lives and marriage protecting me, feeding me, clothing me, and working their asses off to earn money for my car and for college. They love me, they cared for me.

Shane, it's their job to protect me and for all they know I'm dead. You should be able to relate to that considering that you've told me you're trying to protect me. What if I died? Wouldn't you feel a little bit like a failure? If you really love me then you have to love them too. I'm putting my foot down. Either you tell them I'm alive or I-”

“You'll what?” he growled.

She stuck her chin in the air. “Or I'll just have to die so you can spend the rest of your life miserably.” She threw the muffin down, having lost her appetite, and marched ahead of him. “It's funny how easily we humans kick the bucket.” she called. “There's a name for people like you, you know. I believe it's heartless bastards.”

Shane was in front of her, out of nowhere. She didn't stop walking, wasn't going to be swayed this time. She just tried to step around him. Shane grabbed her arm. “You won't die on my watch.” he said. “You won't.”

“That isn't what this is really about! Damn you are so naive! All I'm asking is that you somehow let them know I'm alive, I don't care how. I'll stay here for you Shane, it seems that I love you too. But please,” her voice dropped to a whisper. “Just do this for me.”

Shane took a deep breath, exhaled slowly. “Alright Delilah. You win. I'll tell them.”

She turned and hugged him, sobbed into his shirt. “Thank you.”

Shane stroked her hair. “It's the least I can do after all, my love.”

There, in the middle of the empty hallway, she broke down. She had been kidnapped, beaten and bruised, threatened, and she just needed to cry. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks and onto Shane's shirt. He sighed, hushed her. “It's alright.” he murmured. “I promise, it's going to get better. It will all be okay.”

The lines were so cliche and so unbelievable that she couldn't help laughing a little bit. She sniffed. “I don't think there's anything okay with this, Shane. Nothing makes sense.” she said, but was smiling. “But I do love you, really. I don't know why, and honestly I don't think I have any reason to other than having the hots for you.”

He chuckled then kissed her hair. “I told you would become addicted. It's as simple as that.”

This entire thing was anything but simple, she thought. But at the moment she just decided to accept the feeling, to be glad she wasn't scared at the moment. She hugged onto Shane, hoping to stretch out this moment, to delay the oncoming troubles and evil she knew was waiting.
