She couldn’t believe this. Really, he was still making her do this? Once again, she was scrubbing urinals, paying off her twenty-five thousand dollar debt apparently. Shane sat on a stool, reading
a book while he kept an eye on her.
“This is ridiculous.” she muttered. “Some husband you are.”
“Missed a spot.” he replied, flipping the page of the thick novel he was reading.
“Kiss my ass.” she said under her breath.
“If I recall, you seem to enjoy that when we’re in bed.” he replied, smirking now, his eyes still on the page.
“Yeah, and that’s another thing. We could be having a lot of sex right now, like newly weds are supposed to, but instead you’re making me clean bathrooms.”
“You need a break from sex.” Was his reply.
“Mr. Jacobs, you suck.”
“You would know, Mrs. Jacobs.”
“I want to have sex, Shane.” she said, since he apparently wasn’t picking up on her unsubtle hints.
“We don’t always get what we want Delilah.”
“Oh great, so now my husband won’t have sex with me.” She scrubbed the urinals harder. “I’m cleaning piss sinks, people are keeping secrets from me, Charles has a bond with me and uses it to get into my head. Now I can’t have sex. I’m going to have to take up smoking because I need something to relieve the stress.”
“And smoking will do that for you?” he questioned.
“It might. You never know.”
“I do know. I smoked for a number of years at one time. Not once did it solve my problems. I never thought more clearly, and I also noticed that I never developed an addiction to it.”
“What. Ever.” I said. “You know if I was the one trying to sex starve you, I would be in trouble.”
“I’m doing this for your own good.” he said casually.
“That’s exactly something I would say to deny what’s really going on. Hmm.” She stood up, threw down the brush. “Maybe I should just do what you would do. Maybe I should just make you.”
Shane smirked, closed his book and set it on his lap. “Make me, Delilah?”
“That’s what you would do to me.”
“On the contrary, the last time you refused to sleep with me, I never made you.”
“No, you just played games with me. Okay, I can’t make you.” she admitted. She crossed her arms over her shirt, grabbed the hem and pulled it over her head. “But I can sure as hell make you drool.” She grabbed the button of her jeans, jerked it open.
“Delilah, the men’s bathroom is hardly the place for this.”
“I think it’s kind of exciting, knowing someone could walk in.”
“I disagree. It’s irresponsible.”
“I’m only eighteen. I’m allowed to be a little irresponsible now and then.” She replied, pushing her jeans down her hips. Shane watched, and she saw interest sparking in his eyes. As she reached back for the hook of her bra, Shane’s hand caught hers. “Delilah,” he whispered, his lips at her ear now as he stood behind her. “Put your clothes back on darling.”
“No.” she murmured, then turned and faced him, unhooked the bra anyway, and let it slide down her arms and to the floor. She leaned forward and pressed her lips under his jaw, then down the side of his neck. Shane closed his eyes, inhaled deeply. She kissed his left shoulder, then bent down to kiss his chest.
As she kissed down his chest to his stomach, ending up on her knees, Shane watched with that now familiar fire in his eyes. She kissed his abdomen, looked up at him and bit her lip. She wrapped her arms around his hips and laid her cheek against his skin. “I love you Shane.” she whispered.
“I love you too Delilah.” He said and pulled her up. “But as I said, you need a break from sex. So put your clothes back on, and finish cleaning.” He walked back over to the stool, picked the book up, and started reading again.
“Can’t I just go to school?”
“You will begin your studies with the rest of the students just as soon as they return.”
Sarah walked in. “Hey Delilah-” she saw her topless friend and closed her eyes. “Are you both naked?” She asked.
“I am fully clothed.” Shane said, shaking his head.
“Oh, okay then.” Sarah opened her eyes again, looked Delilah in the eyes. “Your Dad asked me out. I, uh, I didn’t know what to tell him.”
Delilah bent down and picked her bra up from the floor. “I don’t trust him Sarah. I don’t want you to be hurt. And please, don’t call him my Dad. I prefer ‘biological father’. My Dad is… well I don’t know where he is.” She looked at Shane. “I haven’t seen them since I stabbed myself and then Charles took me.”
“I took care of it.” Shane said. “No need to worry.”
“What did you tell them?”
“Let’s worry about this later, Delilah. Sarah is trying to ask your permission to date your father.”
“I’m not going to say no. You can do whatever you like, I just wish you wouldn’t. I don’t trust him.”
“Well, Sarah, no matter what Delilah thinks, I am saying no. Marcus is dangerous and I will not have you hurt again.” Shane said. “And that is final unless I say otherwise.”
“Yes Shane.” Sarah murmured. “I guess maybe it is too soon…I just want you-know-who off my mind.”
Delilah walked over to her and hugged her. “Let’s go do something okay?”
“Delilah, you have a bathroom to finis cleaning.” Shane reminded.
Delilah groaned. “Help me.” she muttered to Sarah. “He’s making me clean bathrooms and he won’t have sex with me.”
Sarah laughed. “Now Delilah, he’s just trying to do what’s best for you.”
“Bite me.” Delilah sighed. “Well you know what Shane, you can’t really make me clean. So goodbye.” she said then grabbed Sarah’s hand and pulled her out of the bathroom.
But Shane was in front of them, his face no longer joking or light or calm. “Delilah, perhaps you have too soon forgotten who is your master.”
Delilah pursed her lips. “Are we going about to get into another fight?” she asked.
“If you do not do as I tell you, then yes.”
“Fine. Sarah, you might want to step aside because I’m tired of just talking. Let’s fight Shane.”
“You know you will lose. And I do not want to fight with you Delilah.”
“But you’ll lie to me and keep things from me? That’s okay? Come on, I’m not stupid. You won’t have sex with me because you feel guilty.”
“I am only trying to protect you Delilah.”
“I am your wife, not your child.” she snapped. “I don’t want another parent, Shane, I want a husband.”
“Delilah, I am your master above all things.”
She pursed her lips. “As long as you keep thinking like that this marriage is destined to fail. I haven’t taken you for granted Shane but you sure as hell are taking me. Either one of us could end up like Charles or-” She looked at Sarah then looked back at him. “I’m more than just your pupil. You know for someone as old as you…well I thought you would know something of what marriage is about. It’s not about who wears the pants, it’s about partnership. I don’t want to be your daughter Shane, and I’m starting to wonder if I want to be your wife.”
She grabbed Sarah’s hand and led her down the hall. Shane stared after them in terror. The thought of losing Delilah in any way made his heart ache. He’d been so proud to call her his wife, but he hadn’t really shown that had he? He didn’t show her a lot of respect sometimes. He thought he knew what he wanted, how he wanted his marriage to work, and he was wrong. He didn’t want to be in charge. He wanted to be her protector, and he wanted her to be happy.
He was hurting the center of his world. As Delilah walked away, each step making his heart break, he wondered if she would come back. Of course she wouldn’t leave physically, but would she leave him emotionally?
Delilah crawled into bed, and didn’t speak or even look at her husband. She just turned out her light and laid her head down. She’d finished cleaning the bathrooms, because apparently that was important to him, but it didn’t mean she forgave him.
She could feel him staring at her, but she was in no mood for talking. She shut her mind off from herself and from him, and felt him jerk a little as she did. She closed her eyes and went to sleep.
It seemed like seconds only before she awoke again, to her husband. “Delilah.” he sobbed.
She sat straight up, turned to him. “Shane, what’s wrong?” She crawled over to him and hugged him. “Baby, what is it?”
“Please don’t leave me.” he begged.
She held onto him tightly. “Shane, of course not. I’d never leave you.” she whispered. She pulled back and kissed him. “I’m sorry Shane. I didn’t mean to hurt you like this.”
“I love you.” he cried.
“I know.” she breathed. “I know you do. I love you too.”
He kissed her, deeply, then laid her down. She resisted gently. “Shane, I don’t think that’s the best idea right now.” she whispered.
“Please.” he breathed, kissed her again. “Please Delilah.”
She sighed, nodded. She just couldn’t say no to him when he was like this. “Okay.”
He kissed her again, pulling up her night gown until it was around her waist. She let him settle between her thighs, and he kissed her more deeply. He was so terrified, she realized, of losing her. It obviously shook him, what she said earlier.
Shane moved into her, kissed her again. She ran a hand over his cheek, wiping away tears. “I love you, Shane.” she breathed. “I won’t leave you. You’ll have to do a lot more than make me clean urinals to get me to leave.” she joked half-heartedly.
He looked into her eyes, and she saw she’d broken his heart. She hadn’t meant to do that. She just wanted him to think. But not think that she was leaving him. “Shane.” she hugged him as close as she could. “Shane, I’m right here. I’m not leaving, I promise. I don’t want to go, I love you. Please don’t be sad. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” She kissed him again and moved her hips against his.
He began moving inside of her, kissing her back. She felt relieved, and hoped that she could heal what she had broken by dawn.
