“So what’s up with you two? Why are you fighting like this?” Josh asked.
“Because he’s being an asshole. You heard him tell me to go change. Who the hell does he think he is anyway?”
“He’s just trying to get his head around it. You’ve gotta see it from his view. Think about what you looked like the last time he saw you and what you look like now.”
“What do I look like exactly?” I snapped.
Josh put his hands up. “Hey, I’m just trying to be reasonable. Don’t take your anger out on me.”
“I’m not that different. I still do all the stuff I did a few years ago, maybe with a few exceptions.”
“Just give him some time to cool. He’s worried about you. Every guy in town is out for you, he’s bound to have noticed all the attention you get now. He’s just getting his back up. He’s always been protective.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“Doesn’t matter. He knows that. The thing about guys, it doesn’t matter if the woman can take care of herself, we’re gonna want to take care of her too. It’s human fucking nature, Zac. Human nature sucks ass for the most part.”
“Eww. I hate that mental picture. Sucking ass. Who does that anyway?”
He just laughed. “You know, I’m not supposed to say anything because of our bet, but Reece has a theory about you and Nick. I don’t like it either.”
“What’s the theory?”
“He says you and Nick are either fighting or really polite because you have the hots for each other. He says eventually you’ll end up fighting your way into sex.”
I made a face. “That’s ridiculous. It’s Nicholas. I mean, he’s always been like a big brother, and a buddy. Well until now. That’s just weird and… Why don’t you like it? I mean, what would be the big deal? I mean if in an alternate universe something like that actually did happen.”
“Well first off, the thought of you having sex isn’t exactly on my ‘fun things to think about’ list. Then you having sex with one of my best friends is even worse because I love both of you and if things ended badly and I had to choose, I’d end up losing a good friend.”
“I would never make you choose Josh. I may be a bitch sometimes but I’m not malicious. I would learn to get along with him.”
“But it’s not going to happen right?” he asked.
“No way. Talk about weird. Creepy. I mean, it’s Nicholas for fuck sakes.”
Yeah, something definitely had to be wrong with me, because the thought of being with Nicholas romantically wasn’t giving me the creeps so much. Instead it was stirring something in my stomach. It should have been disgust, but I realized it was wanting…need. Good Lord, I was actually picturing him naked.
I shook my head. “No. No way. Me and Nicholas? That’s just wrong.”
