Brooke stared into the mirror on the wall in the girls bathroom.  She tried o wipe the tears away from her face, but the stains seemed to remain.  Out of the corner of her eye she could see her friend, Roxxanne, storming into the bathroom.  Her face was red with anger and her hands were balled into fists.  Brooke tried even harder to hide her tears.  If Roxxanne saw her crying, someone would get hurt.

“Brooke…look at me.” Roxxanne ordered.  Brooke didn’t respond.  She pulled her hoodie sleeves over her hands and began to dry her eyes.  “Brooke, look at me NOW!”  Roxxanne grabbed her shoulder and spun her around.  Brooke covered her face with her hands.  Roxxanne gently removed them and stared into her blood-shot eyes.  There was a few moments of silence afterwards.

“Roxxanne…it’s fine…I’m fine…it’s nothing…” she tried to explain.  It wasn’t working well.  Roxxanne released her friends hands and made her way out of the girls bathroom.  Brooke was left alone, leaning against one of the sinks, reminiscing about what happened earlier.  Her moment of silence was broken by Roxxanne running into the bathroom and shoving Brooke into a nearby stall.

“Listen, don’t believe anything you’re about to hear.  Stay in there and don’t make any noise.  Stand on the toilet, that way she can’t tell that you’re in here.”

“Her?”

“Shhh…”  Brooke obeyed.  She locked the door to the stall and slowly climbed onto the toilet.  Yet again, the girls bathroom fell silent except for Roxxanne’s heavy breathing and the sound of footsteps entering.

“Is she in here?” a voice asked.  It was Lyla.  Roxxanne, Brooke and Lyla use to be great friends, that was until Lyla started hanging out with the more popular kids.  She threw aside her old friends and started to kick them around.  The only time she treated Roxxanne and Brooke like true friends was when the popular kids treated her like crap, but that never lasted long.  Besides, Lyla never really liked Brooke.  Lyla did as everyone wanted and was beautiful, in the same way that a stripper was beautiful.  Guys would always gawk at her whenever she walked by.  She was the girl that everyone wanted to get with…for one night…and have some fun.  Now Brooke, on the other hand, never did as others wanted and was a completely random being.  Plus, she was beautiful, in the same way that nature was beautiful.  She was asked out from various guys almost every other day.  Brooke, even though completely independent and free willed, was one of the easiest people in the entire school to get along with.  The only reason you wouldn’t get along with her was if you were jealous, like Lyla was.

“No…she’s not here.  I saw her run off to her class.” Roxxanne lied.

“Okay, now what the hell do you want from me?  I’m really not in the mood to hear you bitch.”

“I’m not going to yell at you.  I just wanna know why you hate Brooke so much.”  Lyla paused.

“Because that little skank thinks she can get whatever she wants.  All the guys love her, and she takes advantage of that. You know she does!”  Her voice lowered.  “I don’t even know why you hang out with her, I know you think the same way I do.  Why don’t you stop being her body guard, you can do better than her.”  Roxxanne didn’t answer her.  “You know that she’s nothing more than a selfish little whore.”

“Yes, she may be selfish at times, but I know that she doesn’t take advantage of peoples’ feelings.  She-“

“That’s a lie and you know it!” Lyla interrupted.  “That’s not that you said the other day.  You were going on about all the crap that she does.  Don’t start pulling this good friend bullshit!”  Brook heard the footsteps of her former friend slowly make their way out of the bathroom.  She hesitated to leave the safety of the stall.

“You can come out now, she’s gone.” Roxxanne informed her.  Brooke slowly pushed the stall door open and walked out.  “I’m sorry.  You weren’t supposed to hear all that.”

“You really said all that?” Brooke asked in disbelief.  Roxxanne nodded.  “why?  How could you?”

“I was mad.  I didn’t mean to say anything.”  Roxxanne gestured to calm Brooke down.  “I all just happened to come out.  I guess Lyla was nearby when I said it.”

“Stop lying to me!  What else have you been saying?”  Roxxanne didn’t reply.  “Tell me!”

“Nothing,” she stuttered.  “I didn’t say anything else about you, I promise.”

“How can I believe you?”  Before Roxxanne had the time to state her case, Brooke stormed out of the bathroom.  Roxxanne made an attempt to catch up with her, but when the bell rang for first period to end, she decided to head to her next class.  Brooke needed to be left alone to clear her head.
