. Chapter 3

I set there on the ground. The man I had grown to hate in only the last ten minutes was standing right in front of me, but there wasn’t much I could do. My face felt like it had been hit with a cinderblock and my ankle was clearly broken. Maybe if it the big guy, Luke, wasn’t there I could somehow squirm past him and into the elevator. I did the only thing I could think to do in that moment. It wasn’t much but it made me feel better.

I spit in his face. He dropped his hand and did something I didn’t expect. He smiled. “I like you,” He laughed and lifted his and to wipe my spit off his cheek. He looked to be in his forties and Luke in his thirties.

“John, sir, I’m so sorry. He attacked me.” I turned to see Noland running down the hallway toward us. He was still holding his nose.

John stood up. “It’s quite alright. If I had just been told I was being kept against my will to take part in something like this I would have done something similar,” He smiled. “Besides even if we would have happened to not be using the elevator it only works with a key, and Luke he keeps it safe.” I looked at Luke to see him swirling a large key on his finger.

I had never felt more trapped in my life. I was a hundred floors above the ground level and my ankle was broken. Even if it wasn’t I would have to steel the only key out of here from a man who makes the hulk look like a kitten. I wasn’t going anywhere.

Nolan ran over and helped me up. He put my arm around him so I could put weight on him to talk. I didn’t fight anymore. I knew there was no point. For now at least, I had to play along with what they wanted. Maybe somewhere down the line I would find a way out, but not today.

“Take him back to the medical room and get his ankle in a cast. Then take him to his room. Tomorrow I will personally brief him on what comes next and we will finally begin.” John said. He turned from us and walked to one of the doors. He pulled out a key and unlocked it.

“Hey!” I shouted before him and Luke could pass into the next room.

They turned to look at me. “Yes?”

“One day I am going to get out of here!” I pointed to John. “When I do I’m going to take Lukey-boy down for breaking my ankle and I’ll be sure to run this company, Accel, straight into the ground!”

No one spoke. It was a very surreal moment, two born enemies staring into each other’s soul. For now I would go along with what they wanted from me, but this was a battle. If there were any doubts about that I just made it very clear.

“I’m looking forward to it,” He finally spoke after a long moment of silence. That was all he said. He opened the door and left me alone in the long hallway with my personal assistant Nolan.

He had finally dropped his hand from his nose. It looked like it had stopped bleeding but there was dried blood all over his face. “Let’s go,” He sighed.

We walked down to the same medical room we had been in before. He helped me to the bed before he walked over to a small sink. Turned the water on and used a rag to clean the blood off his face.

“You hit hard for someone that spends most of his time playing videos games,” He laughed.

“How do you know so much about me?” I asked. It was aggravating to have people who you have never met know everything about you.

“I was given a file a month ago. It was all about you. They told me to read up since I was going to be your assistant.” He was done wiping his face. He walked back over to me and pulled a chair up next to the bed. “Let’s see that ankle.”

I lifted my leg up so he could see it. He started to feel around my ankle. Everything he did hurt, I cringed in pain.

“Yep it’s defiantly broken,” He said. He lowered my leg back down and walked over to a drawer. He pulled out a roll of casting material. “That Luke is crazy. There was no way you ever getting pass him, he didn’t need to go and break you ankle.”

“What’s that guy’s story,” I asked. Nolan had returned and set back beside me.

“You know honestly I’m not really sure. He is very secretive. All I know is that he is John’s body guard. Beyond that I have no idea.” He reached up and grabbed my ankle. “Back to the problem at hand, your ankle. Lucky for you it isn’t really that bad. This is going the hurt,” He said and twisted my foot.

There was a loud crack as my bone was set back into place. Pain shot up my body. I let out a small whimper, but clinched my teeth to keep from shouting.

“That’s it! The hard parts done,” Nolan said. He pulled up the role of casting material and began to cast my ankle. He looked like he really knew what he was doing.

“Do you have medical training?” I asked.

“You could say that. I went to school to become a doctor. It is one of my many talents,” He said with a small smile on his face. “Okay that’s it. You are all done.” He knocked on the cast. It was hard as a rock.

I set up, “So now what?”

He grabbed my arm and helped me up. I may have had a cast on but it still hurt a lot to put weight on my ankle. “You heard The Director. I am taking you to your room.”

I wasn’t totally sure what that meant but I went with it, not like I was going anywhere. Nolan helped me out of the medical room and into the hallway. We turned to the right and started down the long hallway. We passed at a lot of doors on the way. All of them were shut tight. They were all blank, no numbers or anything.

After passing around ten doors we got to one that did have a marking. On the front of the door it read SHARP.

“I’m guessing this is our stop,” I said.

“That’s right.” He opened the door and helped me inside. He flipped a switch to the side of the door and the lights came on. The room looked to be the size of an average bed room, which is exactly what it was. There was a large bed in the middle of the room, and that was it. Other than a small room across from where we were standing, a restroom.

“Get a good night sleep alright,” He said and turned to leave. “I will be back in the morning. Tomorrow you will be going back to the future, so you will need your rest.” He didn’t give me time to reply and left the room. I heard the lock on the door click. I may have a broken ankle but they still didn’t trust me with an unlocked door.

The first think I did was use the restroom. I had no idea how long I had been with them, but it felt like awhile. When I was in the restroom I noticed they had left a change of clothes. I didn’t bother messing with them yet.

Before I went to bed I did some push up and sit ups. It was weird working out with a cast on. My ankle was killing me. I had never broken a bone before and they didn’t give me anything for the pain. But it didn’t matter to me, I had to work out. I told The Director that I was going to run Accel into the ground. I didn’t know what tomorrow would hold for me, but I knew sometime soon I would need to be strong. I couldn’t let all my strength disappear while I was here.

After that I turned off the lights and crawled into the large bed. It was actually pretty nice. I laid there for a while. It was hard to fall asleep. A ton of thoughts kept running through my mind. What was going to happen tomorrow? What does Accel have planned for the future that they need me for? Will my ankle heal fast enough for me to try to escape again? Only time held the answers I needed. Before I knew it I was in dream land.

The next morning I woke up before Nolan returned. I was very hungry. I don’t even know when the last time I ate was. I had no sense of what time it was. They didn’t supply me with a clock and I had no windows. Though I was hungry I decided to go ahead and do more push-ups and sit-ups.

Shortly after I started I head the door unlock. I quickly stopped and jump on the bed as fast as someone with only one good leg could. I didn’t really want them to know I was working out. It would be nice if they thought they were keeping me weak.

The door swung open and Nolan walked in. I his hand was a crutch. That would be helpful. He walked over to where I was sitting on the bed. The thought went through my head that may notice I was bit sweaty from working out. I still wasn’t sure if I could trust him or not. He says he is my personal assistant, but he still works for this weird company.

“I’m glad you’re already awake. I was always bad at getting people out of bed.” Nolan said. He handed me the crutch and helped me stand. It didn’t seem like he noticed I had been working out, if he did he didn’t say anything.

In the one night I had been there I already really liked my room. At least things were simple here. I was a bit nervous to leave it.

“Can you tell me what I should expect out of today, any warnings?” I asked.

He smiled. “I can’t say much. Let’s just say it will be exciting.”

I didn’t ask any more questions. I heard The Director last night say he was going to brief me today. I figured we were probably headed to see him. We left the room and headed down the long hallway. Using the crutch to walk helped a lot more than I thought it would. I had never used one before but I figured it out pretty fast.

We didn’t have far to go this time. A few doors down from mine was another marked door. It had a big 7 on the front of it. Nolan opened the door for me. Inside it looked like some type of laboratory. There were wires and large equipment everywhere.

In the middle of the room were five chairs. They looked like they had just been brought in and put there. Three of them were filled. Two by John and Luke, the other was by a young blond man. He was tall and skinny and looked to be in his early twenties. He was sitting very casually, like he wasn’t too worried about whatever was going to happen today. The opposite of me, I was nervous as hell. The three of them had already begun talking.

John looked up and noticed us, “Welcome, please have a seat.” He said and motioned toward the two open chairs.

We both took a seat next to each other. On my other side was the blond guy. “My name’s Colin. Nice to meet you,” The guy said with confidence. He put his hand out to shake.

I took it and tried to grip it as firm as I could, “I’m Ryan, it’s nice to meet you too,” I said trying to sound as confident as him.

“Colin here is a Diver just like you, only he’s been doing it for almost a year,” John said.

“What’s a Diver?” I asked

“Oh sorry I forget to tell you,” Nolan spoke up. “Divers are what we call the people whose minds get sent to the future, or whose minds dive into the future. You are also a Diver.”

“That’s right, now let’s get down to business,” John said. “Ryan your descendent, Mark Crater, got arrested last time you were in the future.”

“Well it didn’t help that I had no idea what was going on,” I spoke up.

“Mark is a low member of the resistance movement in Havok City. That’s the city you were running through by the way, Havok City.” John took a sip of the brown liquid in the cup he was holding. “We didn’t realize till after we sent you that Mark was on the run from the guards. It was meant to be a test run so you could see how things worked in the city, but now you’re descendent is in jail. Before we can go forward we have to bust him out.”

“That’s where I come in,” Colin said.

“I will also be there with you Ryan,” Nolan said. “Sadly my family line ends somewhere in the next thousand years, so I can’t dive. But we found a way to send someone else’s mind along with a Diver when they dive.”

I shot him a look. “How can you do that?”

“You will see. Basically we connect my mind with yours when you dive. We call what I do leaching. The Leach just goes in with the Diver. The thing is only the diver they went in with can see the Leach. The leach can’t affect anything in the future. They basically become a hologram that only the Diver can see,” Nolan explained. “I will be you’re connection to the past. I also know a lot of information about the future. You can ask me anything you need anytime. I will be there to help you.”

“So you really are my own personal assistant,” I laughed. I looked at Colin, “Where’s your assistant?

“Nolan’s my old assistant. I don’t need one any more so they gave him to you.” He looked a bit cocky. He had defiantly done this a few times.

“That’s basically all there is to it.” John said. “Ryan, when you dive you will wake up in a prison. Just sit tight until Colin shows up and busts you out. If you make it out alive Nolan will brief you one what to do next.”

“How will I know who Colin is? He is will be his descendant right?” I asked. I didn’t really want to be a prisoner of Accel, but talking about all this and about the future Havok City was a little exciting.

“Trust me. You will know it’s me.” Colin said. He jumped up, “Enough talk, I’m ready let’s do this!” He walked over to a line of clear tubes that lined one of the walls. He clicked a button beside one of the tubes and it slid open. He stepped inside and looked back, “What are you waiting for?”

Nolan got up and walked to the tubes. I limped after him. He pushed a button next to two of them and the tubes slid open. “This one’s yours,” He said points to the one on the right. “Leave the crutch out.”

I propped my small wooden crutch up against the wall next to my tube. I was nervous but I knew there was nowhere to run. All I could do was step inside the tube. Nolan did the same in the tube to the left.

The Director was now standing in front of us. “Nolan and Colin you already know this, but Ryan when the water fills the tube breathe it in. You will not drown. It’s scary at first but I promise you will be fine. You have actually done this once before, you were just knocked out.”

I didn’t like the sound of that. I knew I had nowhere to run but I didn’t trust these guys.

The director walked over to a very large computer. “Now remember when you get there, this is not a video game. We do not know what will happen if your descendant dies with your mind in there body. We don’t want to find out.”

With those finally words he began pressing buttons on the overly large keyboard. Right away the tubes all slid shut. With one final click I knew they were in place. I was very nervous. This all seemed so alien to me. I was fights back a panic attack.

Things only got worse when some type of water started to fill the bottom of the tubes. It was rising fast. John said to not hold my breath. I needed to breathe it in, easier said than done.
The water quickly reached my face, then past my head. On instinct I help my breath. I knew I was told not to but I could stop it from happening. I have never been submerged and told to breathe before. I looked to my side to see Colin looked like he was asleep. He was also breathing.

I didn’t think about it I just went for it. I pushed all the air out of my lungs so I would have to take a breath in, or die. I don’t know what I expected. I figured since the other two did it so easy that it must be some type of special liquid that felt like breathing in air. It didn’t.

I sucked in a huge about of the liquid. Immediately my lungs felt like they were on fire. I reached my hand up to try and stop from taking any more in, but it was too late. I felt like I was going to drown.

Everything started to get very blurry very fast. I tried to kick the tube with my cast, I thought maybe I could break it open and gasp for air. My leg didn’t respond. My hand fell from where I was trying to hold my nose. I no longer had control of my own body.

Everything became more blurry as my ears started to ring. My body forced me to start breathing. Very breath made me feel like I was a step closer to deaths door. It didn’t take very long for me to completely blackout.
