Chapter 2

I was going to be late for class, again. I couldn't let this happen. This was going to be the fifth time this month. One more time and I was going to be suspended. Brittani was still talking about how fine this new boy was and getting more and more excited each minute. She stopped to take a breath. I took this opportunity to get in a word. \"Hey, Brit. Um, I got to take off. Can't be late for Bakerman's class again.\" She nodded and headed off for her class in the opposite direction. Mr. Bakerman was the main reason of my impending suspension. He was the only teacher who took the time to write up students for being late. I was late for his class everyday because it was my first class/homeroom. Everybody knows you can be late for your first class, but apparently not him.

I took a deep breath and took off in a sprint down the hall. I had 30 seconds to make it there. I dodged every obstacle in my way: lost-looking freshman, jocks, cheerleaders and the like. I was 3 feet away and it looked like I was going to make it. When I tripped. Yes, I tripped, over a kid. He was bent down in the middle of the hallway, tying his shoe. The bell rung.

I sighed, exasperated. I was just about to chew the kid out when he stood up. He had the whitest set of teeth, I had ever seen in my life and of course I have to mention he was gorgeous. He smiled at me and ran his hand through his hair. I unconsciously sighed too.

\"Hey, I'm lost. Do you mind pointing me in the direction of the main office\" He asked. Any other less sexy guy would have gotten the finger and I would have continued to class. But this guy was stunning. I supposed he was the new guy Brittani had been raving about earlier. He looked evil, I realized with a shock but he seemed so nice. I pointed,

\"It's that way. Keep going straight and it's right there.\" I said. He smiled at me again.

\"Thanks.\" he mumbled and followed my gesture. I stood watching him walk away, mesmerized, for a second then made my way to Mr. Bakerman's class.

Upon entering, Mr. Bakerman stopped teaching and glared at me. \"Sorry, Mr. Bakerman.\" I mumbled and started toward my desk.

\"Stop right there, young lady.\" he said. I glanced around to make sure he was talking to me. Turning around to face him, I said,

\"Me, sir. What'd I do?\"

\"Don't play games, Ms, Bitters. Come get your suspension slip and head for Principal O'Donald's office.\" He said, waving a sheet of paper at me.

\"I've only been late 5 times, Mr. Bakerman.\" I informed him. Without a word, he stuck hishandup to tell me to stay, and opened one of his desk's drawers. He pulled out an ancient looking copy of our school handbook and turned to one of the folded up pages.

\"A student must be sent to the office with a suspension slip after 6 times late for a class OR being late two times in succession.\" He read verbatim from the handbook.

\"You were late yesterday, Ms. Bitters.\" My mouth dropped open as I took the slip and headed back out the classroom.

The walk down the hallway to the principal's office seemed longer than usual.I made my way dragging my feet and my shoulders slumped. I looked like a female version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I walked in the office and was told by the secretary, Mrs. Coldman, to go on in. I knocked once and entered. There were only two chairs in front of the principal's desk and one of them was being occupied by the boy I had met in the hall earlier. I took the seat next to him and he glanced my way and his smile immediately brightened 20 watts.

Principal O'Donald was sitting behind his desk with a grim expression and the vein in his forehead that appeared only when he was frustrated, throbbing. He sighed. \"Can anyone explain why a new kid is in my office.\" He whispered. He seemed to be talking to himself. I handed him my suspension slip and the vein in his forehead got bigger. He ran his hand over his bald scalp. He signed the suspension slip, gave me the evil eye, and dismissed me.

I had to call my mom and I knew she was not going to be happy. I was just about to make my way out when the principal spoke up.

\"Alexa,\" he said, \"Take that to Mr. Bakerman and tell him I didn't suspend you.\"

I looked over at the new boy and he was staring at Principal O'Donald and he seemed to be concentrating. I didn't question it.

\"And you're free to go to, Blank.\" he added. I made my way out, my face puzzled.

\"Alexa, wait up.\" I heard. It was the new boy running up to catch me. I eyed him curiously and asked,

\"Is your name really Blank.\" He laughed.

\"Yes, let me walk you to class.\" he said taking my hand and holding it. I didn't resist but his hand was cold, unnaturally cold. He steered me the wrong way and when I told him he laughed again and said, \"I know, I want to take the long way.\"
