Chapter One:

Rain:
The smell of pine and dew filled my nose intoxicating me as I ran through the forest. My paws hit the moist grass and dirt hardly sinking in because I was practically flying through the forest. The air breezed through my black fur and vaguely into my pointy ears that I had back against my head. I wasn’t after anything. I smelt a few deer in the distance but wasn’t after them. I was running just to experience the sense of freedom which I so much loved. I was coming to the stream that hid deep in the woods and feeling the power in my back legs was about to jump over it. But I woke up.
I stared into the darkness up to my ceiling. I still could smell the pine as if it lingered in the air and I was just running. I felt my wolf struggling inside me practically whining begging me to let her out. I turned over in my bed and looked out my window. It was still dark outside but felt like early morning. I sniffed the air and smelt the scent of rain that the wind was carrying through the cracks erasing what was left of the pine from my dream. From the looks of my wet window it had already rained. I sat up and looked at my clock. It blinked 4:27AM from across the room where I kept it because I wouldn’t wake up if it was next to me and I’d be able to hit snooze. I stood and walked to it and turned down the brightness of the numbers that were emanating off it and then walked out of my room. I passed my reflection in the hall mirror and stopped to take a look. I didn’t need the light to be on to see my dark brown blackish hair that went to my chest lay messily on my shoulders. I stared at the reflection of my grey green eyes staring back into my own. I could sense my wolf there staring back at me from behind my surface. Stepping away I made my way downstairs by jumping over the railing. I didn’t feel like walking all the way down the steps, after all I was thirsty. Landing with an almost inaudible thud I made my way to the kitchen and went to the fridge. I poured some orange juice in a glass and turned to leave. I was startled when I saw a shadow out of the corner of my eye. I looked and was relieved to see my brother standing there outside the doorway of the kitchen. I could see in the darkness he too had on a dark long sleeve shirt and blue and green plaid pajama bottoms. His dark hair was sticking up as well as he got closer coming into the kitchen. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Will you stop gawking? I know what you’re laughing at.” He said picturing his hair in his mind that he took from mine.
“Sorry, why are you wearing the same thing as me?” I asked still laughing at his hair.
“We must have gotten dressed at the same time and accidently influenced each other again.” He said referring to all the other times we had matched outfits.
“Whoops.” I said shrugging stopping my laughter as I brought the sweet smelling juice to my lips.
“So why are you up?” he asked climbing onto the island in our kitchen.
“Just woke up…” I said as I sat on the counter across from him.
“Nightmare?” he asked concerned and automatically trying to go through my mind. He got what he was looking for.
“Oh. She wants out huh. Yeah… mine too.” He said smiling and shaking his head. I searched his mind and saw he had a similar dream. Only it was raining in his and he was running nowhere in particular also but he was getting soaked.
“It was raining…” I said pointing to the window.
“Yeah I know. I’m surprised you slept through it.” He said smiling at me.
“Yeah, me too.” I said surprised that I actually slept while it rained. Usually I went to lay with him because I and my wolf both don’t like big thunderstorms. Which was probably why I didn’t wake.
“Yeah you’re right… it wasn’t a thunderstorm. It just sprinkled a little.” He said reading my mind.
“I’m a little hungry.” I said setting my glass down and looking towards the pantry. Last time I checked, which was yesterday, we were low on groceries.
“We can eat later. Let’s go running.” he said with a large smile on his face. Automatically my wolf jumped for joy inside me and got antsier.
“Alright, alright. Geez!” I said walking towards the backdoor. I turned towards Nicholas one last time.
“Race you!” I thought to him just before I turned, ran into the cold air, dived off the porch and phased.
My paws hit the moist soggy ground trying to sink in. I didn’t give them the chance. I kept running sensing Nicholas right on my tail—literally. It smelt like rain as we ran. We reached the forest and darted around the trees and over the logs and rotted tree carcasses. He was now next to me. I looked over slightly and saw his tongue was hanging out the side of his mouth as he ran, like he always did when we raced and he had to work overtime. I kicked myself into gear once he started to pass me. Lowering my head and pressing my ears harder and moving my legs in longer strides I was able to pass him. I sped up faster and saw the trees pass by me turning them into somewhat a blur. My eyes were fixated on the opening that was coming up that would lead to the stream and also lead to a nice long drink. It felt good to feel the wind brush through my fur and have the wet pine scent feel my nostrils. Nicholas was no longer right behind me and was few paces away. I was coming up to the opening fast. I felt the familiar strength go to my legs as I had felt inside my dream and lunged myself off the log that was slightly over the stream. I hit the other bank and turned to see Nicholas jet out of the woods and nearly jump right on me. I jumped out of the way. Once he landed on his paws he turned to face me.
“Alright, let’s go!” he though kneeling so his head was down closer the ground and his tail was up in the air wagging like crazy. He was still panting but the bared his teeth in his playful grin.
“Stop being a sore loser. I won.” I thought standing up straight and raising my tail.
He stood up too losing his grin. He started to walk away towards the stream for a drink when I jumped him. I tackled him to the grown and began biting on his ear. He tried shaking me off but I wouldn’t let go. He threw his body onto the floor landing on me. He growled as he bit playfully at my neck while I growled playfully biting at his ear. I hit him with my back legs off me and turned myself over and jumped up. I lowered my head ready to attack again. He mimicked my position and we faced off. We began circling around each other.
“Afraid you’ll lose?” He asked taunting me as he bared his teeth.
“No. I just don’t think it’s fair I bruise your ego so early in the morning.” I thought returning the taunt.
“Well I think I’ll live.” He thought as he lunged at me.

I dodged him and managed to get my jaws right on the back of his neck. He yelped in surprise as I made him lower to the floor by applying pressure. Once he was on the floor I let go. I took a couple steps back as he turned and glared at me. He hated when I did that during a fight even just messing around. I got from the bond he was feeling overpowered and less dominant. I felt bad. I shut the bond as he rose and he got ready to attack me again. As he came at me I purposely made the wrong decision and dodged over his left shoulder. He was better at catching the dodge on his left than right. Before my paws hit the floor I felt his teeth on my neck. He tossed me to the ground with ease and I landed with a painful thud in a muddy puddle causing mud to splash up around me. He went at the back of my neck like I did his and applied little pressure. He wanted surrender. I swallowed my own pride and lowered my tail putting it between my legs. As he let go I rolled onto my back and showed my stomach.
“Alright, alright! Geez!” I thought as I looked up to him staring down.
If it wasn’t a play fight I would have looked away. But since it was I stared straight into his eyes absorbing his emotion. He was surprised he caught me and I submitted. I usually was pretty stubborn. But I sent him the pain I was feeling from when he practically threw me against the ground.
“Are you okay?” He asked picking his ears up and forward and leaning down to me. I felt the guilt and worry coming from him. I stood ignoring the pain in my leg and began wagging my tail.
“Of course, I’ll heal. Want to go again?!” I asked kneeling down in my ready position but hoping for a no.
“No that’s okay. I’m thirsty…” He said hesitantly turning away from me towards the stream.
I followed. When we got to the stream we knelt down our heads and took a drink. He was lapping at the water like it was the most delicious. Through the bond I felt that for him it was. He was parched. It made me thirstier. I began lapping up the water just like he did. Once our thirst was quenched we sat on the damp ground. We listened as the birds started to awaken and make noise. The sun would be up soon. And school would start soon after that. He got my thoughts and let out a huff growl. I leaned into him nudging my head into the fur of his neck. I let out a low growl that was more of a purring hum. Who said wolfs didn’t have a form of purring?
He returned the low rumble and we both stood and headed back to the house.
