I spotted Lina making her way to Todd's Jeep after the seventh period bell rang, and Ipractically ran tocatch up to her. I had totalk to her. I had toknow what was going on.
"Lina!" I called, but she didn't hear me. "Lina, wait up!" When she turned around, she looked slightly annoyed.
"What?" I stopped in my tracks at the edge in her voice, but I decided to continue on even if everyone around us could hear.
"Why didn't you sit with us at lunch?" Lina looked around at the upperclassmen heading to their cars, seemily avoiding my question for a few seconds.
"Todd asked me to sit with his friends today, so I did. No biggie." She shrugged as if none of it mattered, but for me it did.
"You didn't speak to us in class today either. Or sit near us for that matter."
"Todd's my boyfriend now. I have to spend time with his friends, too, Avery." She seemed to get more annoyed by the fact that I wasn't understanding where she was coming from. This wasn't the Lina that was my best friend.
"I know, but you could at least act like we're still best friends." I said sarcastically, but Lina didn't think it was funny.
"Todd said you and Ryan would probably act like this, be all upset that I wasn't spending every minute with you two."
My mouth fell open at her words. Where was all of this coming from? She wasn't even acting like the same Lina I had known before the summer. The one who always wanted to hang out with us just as much as we wanted to hang out with her.
"Todd said?" I started, getting angry. "So now Todd knows us so well that he can predict how we'll act when our best friend completely ignores us?"
"Avery, don't be like that."
"No, really. Todd doesn't know me. Heck, he doesn't even know my freakin name apparently! He called me Anna!" The edge growing in my voice told me that I should just walk away. I knew I needed to stop, but I couldn't. She was my best friend!
Lina just rolled her eyes. "It was an accident!"
"But what kind of boyfriend doesn't know her best friend's names?"
Lina dropped her bag and started towards me, pointing her finger. "Don't diss my boyfriend. If you were a true best friend you would except that I'm with Todd. You wouldn't be jealous that I actually got a boyfriend before you!"
She was face to face to me now, and I was speechless. Did she really think I was mad because I was jealous of her? That wasn't it at all, and she didn't even realize it. "You don't even realize what you've done, do you?" I said in such a hoarse whisper I'm not sure she even heard me. I turned away and started towards my car, trying to keep the tears in until I was safely inside. Ryanworked at the local bookstore after school, so I couldn't talk to her until after supper. Lina and I used to hang out after school, but now I was alone.
I was unlocking my car door when I heard someone call my name behind me. I quickly wiped my watery eyes, and turned around to see Grant jogging towards me with his bookbag slung over his left shoulder.
"What now?" I quivered, unable to hide that I was about to cry. He stopped a few feet away, hesitant, and I realize he'd seen and heardthe scene with Lina. Looking around the parking lot at the students loitering, I wandered how many people had heard us.
"I was just wondering if I could get a ride home." He kicked at the gravel, avoiding my gaze like he used to when we were younger. It was the first timehe hadn't made some sarcastic remark.
I opened my door and threw my bookbag in the back seat. "Get in."
He hurried around the car, and I reached across the seat to unlock the door for him. "Thanks," he said, and then he was silent as I turned on the car and began backing out of my parking spot. I saw my red, watery eyes in the review mirror. Great, just great.
We road in silence for a few minutes until Grant spoke.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not really."
"I'm a good listener."
"Grant, you wouldn't understand anything. You just moved back here. You don't know me anymore, quit acting like I'm that same little girl that once thought you were my best friend. We're different people now. You don't know anything about me." I snapped at him, even though I knew I shouldn't have, but I was still upset.
"I can try."
Those three simple words, along with his look of pure concern broke me. I pulled into an old, abandoned parking lots and decided to tell him about Lina. How she used to be our best friend, and how she'd changed over the summer. I'd long given up the strength to not cry.
He listened, not bothering to speak, but just nodding his head sympathetically and rubbing my back. When I was done, he reached across the console and wrapped me in a tight hug. "It's going to be okay." He said soothingly. This was the first time I'd seen him act like the young Grant I used to know. My old friend.
