Chapter 1: Murder and sister

A hotel staff called the authorities and reported that two people had been shot in a hotel room. Within minutes, the paramedics and Chicago Police Department arrived on the scene. Paramedics pronounced both the man and woman, found to be were shot, dead. Then twenty-four years-old rookie Detective Maggie Preyval came to look at the bodies and was so shocked that she froze then dropped to her knees. She discovered that the deceased were her parents, her father Adam Preyval and her estranged mother Tara Moremoon who was divorced from her father. Not long after Maggie started crying and tears were flowing down her face like water coming down a waterfall. Later fifty years old veteran Police Commander Detective Frank Growlern went to scene and was just as shocked as Maggie was because he was a long time friend of both Adam and Tara and was not expecting to see them dead. Frank froze for while then he saw Maggie on her knees right him so he patted Maggie on her shoulder to offer her some comfort while the rest of investigation team combed the area for clues.

Being the professional police officer he was, Frank put aside his emotions and carry out the investigation like how he would usually do. “Maggie, I know you must be devastated but please can you exit the scene so that we conduct a proper investigation” Frank told Maggie nicely even though he knew that he could have simply ordered her to do so because he was her commanding officer. Maggie complied and went out of the hotel as Frank and his team continued with their work. Maggie sat in the left front seat of a police car and grieved over the death of her parents, tears were in eyes and emotions overwhelmed her completely. Maggie’s emotions was so overpowering that it made her forget that she actually had a job to do. Suddenly Maggie’s boyfriend cum co-worker, Toby, saw Maggie in the police car and approached her. Upon approach, Toby put his hand on Maggie’s shoulder and offered her some comforts. Both of them wanted to hug each other but it was physically impossible due to the small size of the car window. “Hey I feel sorry about what happened to your parents” said Toby then he added “I hope you are feeling better” “I’ll be fine, thank for the concern” Maggie replied in a soft, diminished and sorrowful tone. “Hey Toby come over here and look at this” one of the officers yelled to Toby and Toby told Maggie “I gotta to go” then as he walked away, Toby looked back and told Maggie “don’t worry, Chief and I will make sure we bring the killer of your parents to justice”. That line from Toby awakened Maggie from overwhelming feeling of sadness and grief and she was reminded that she was a police officer with a job to do. The case then became both a professional and personal task that Maggie knew she got to do.

Later at the police headquarter, Frank sat in his office and looked at some of the photos of the crime scene and thought deeply about it when Maggie suddenly entered his office. “I want in on the investigation of my parent” said Maggie and Frank replied “you sure about this?” “Yes, sir” Maggie answered in calm and assertive manner. “Okay, come with me, I scheduled to question someone that you should have met but never met” Frank told Maggie then they walked out of the office and headed toward the questioning room. “Who are we going to question?” Maggie asked Frank and he replied “your sister”. Maggie was completely stunned by the answer as she always thought that she was their only child so she responded “what? I don’t have a sister” “Eh…. Oh yes you do” Frank replied then he adjusted his glasses and explained “when your mom left your dad about seventeen years ago, she was pregnant. After your parents were officially divorced, your mom went to New York City and gave birth there”. “All these while, I had a sister and I was told nothing about it” said Maggie then Frank replied “well, you going to see her” and he opened the door of the questioning room.

Upon entering the questioning room, Maggie saw a teenage girl with long blond hair and tears in her blue eyes sitting in a wheelchair on the other side of the desk and stared at her. Then Frank noticed how surprised Maggie was then he looked at Maggie and told her “Oh sorry. totaIly forgot to inform you that your sister was born with cerebral palsy” “Elisa Moremoon, I am Frank Growlern, a long time friend to both your parents and I am here to do some question” said Frank and Elisa looked up and whimpered “I know, my mom told me about you ,feel free to ask anything” “Before I ask anything, the woman beside me is Maggie Preyval, the first child of your father Adam Preyval and your mother Tara Moremoon. In other words, she is your sister” Frank told Elisa and she was shocked to the extent whereby her mouth opened slightly and she exhaled heavily.  “I didn’t know I have a sister, I knew who my father is and my mom had told me a lot about him but she never mentioned that I have a sister” said Elisa in an uncertain and still shock tone. Then Frank explained “when your mother is pregnant with you, your parents already had an eight years-old child with them. However their marriage failed and they divorced even you were born, hence leaving your sister in the care of your father and you with your mother.” “But why didn’t my mom tell me anything about my sister? And if they already had a daughter and expecting another why would they just settle their problems with a divorce?” Elisa asked Frank and Frank replied in an assertive tone “I believed that I’m here to question you and not the other around.” That reply caused both Elisa and Maggie to suspect that Frank knew more what he was telling them.  Then Frank and Maggie began questioning Elisa. After they are done with questioning Elisa, Frank went out of the questioning room to get a cup of coffee and Maggie stood in the questioning room with Elisa.

Immediately after Frank left the room, Maggie tried to start a conversation with Elisa by telling her “actually I don’t think dad knew mom was pregnant when she left him” Later Maggie explained “because if he did, he wouldn’t put his hands on her” then she elaborated “On the night when I was only eight, mom and dad arguing in their room but their quarrel were so loud that I could hear them from my room. So I went over to their room and I saw mom came out of the room crying with bruises on her so I went over to her.”  Maggie added “then she hugged me, said that she was sorry and told me that she is leaving me and dad. I hugged and begged her to stay. But no matter how hard I tried or how badly I cried, mom still took her bags with her and went out of the apartment.” Maggie continued her story and said “later I went into the room and saw dad sitting on a chair next to the bed with a look of regret on his face.” As Elisa was still listening, Maggie told Elisa “I could tell he was upset and regretted what he had done but I still blame him for what happened and have not really forgiven him for me losing a mother.” “Maybe if dad knew that mom was pregnant, they wouldn’t have divorced and we would have already met” said Maggie then Elisa replied “neither have I ever seen dad in person nor did I ever talked to him in my entire life. Never thought the day that I could see him in person is when he died”. Maggie realized that her sister is still considered legally underage and wondered what would happen to Elisa because she had lost both her parents. Not long after, Frank returned with drinks for the young women. He passed a cup to each of them and said “I heard from both of your parents that the both of you like drinking coffee so I got the you’ol some from the vending machine” then he added “I know that losing your parents is not easy. Trust me, my mom left me when I was eight and I lost my dad even before I could finish high school.” Right after, Frank told Maggie and Elisa “I feel your pain but I hope the both of you would be strong if not for yourself, at least for each other.”

Suddenly there is a knock on door and Frank went to get the door and realized there were two men in suits by the door. Then one of them asked Frank “are you Frank Growlern?” Frank replied “yes, I am” and the man replied “I’m Adam Preyval’s attorney” then the other man told Frank “I am Tara Moremoon’s attorney”. “Can I help the both of you?” Frank asked both the men and Tara’s attorney replied “is Maggie Preyval and Elisa Moremoon here?” “Yes, they are at the desk. What do both of you want with them?” Frank replied. “We would like to talk with both of them and you regarding their parents’ will”. Hence they entered the room and Frank announced “Maggie, Elisa, these are your parents’ lawyers. They have something to discuss with the both of you”. Frank and Maggie went over to Elisa’s side of desk and sat beside her whereas the attorneys sat on the other side of the desk.

“We are here to let all about a will that was made about eight years ago” said one of the attorneys then the other told them “the will state that the assets would be split fifty-fifty among the two daughters, Maggie and Elisa. Each daughter would a fifty percent share of their combined asset provided both the daughters are of legal age”. Then he added “but if both of the daughters are underage, Frank Growlern would be appointed as the trustee in charge of the asset until both of the daughters reaches the legal age and they will receive their share of the asset. Frank would also be given the custody of both of the daughters” Then Maggie asked the attorneys “what if one of their daughter is of legal age?” Then one of the attorneys answered “the will also state that if Maggie Preyval is of legal age but Elisa Moremoon is still underage, Maggie would get her share of the asset and would be appointed as trustee in charge of Elisa’s share of the asset. She would also be given the custody of Elisa.” “But I have a job that required me to be on-call twenty-four seven, I don’t have the time to take care of a handicap person” Maggie responded in a loud, displeased and insensitive tone. Elisa was stunned and appalled by how completely insensitive and indiscreet her alleged sister was and how Maggie did not want anything to do with her. Immediately, Elisa gave Maggie a look of disappointment and told her “who need you take care of me anyways?” then Elisa, being upset, pushed herself away from Maggie and went out of the room in a hurry.

Maggie realized how careless she was and regretted her action then she called out “Elisa” but Elisa ignored her sister’s call. Frank looked to Maggie and started shaking his head slowly and methodically to show how not surprise of he was of Maggie then he looked to the two attorneys and told them “Can the both of you give a moment to talk to my rookie?” The attorneys nodded and Frank told Maggie “your sister may be handicap but she has never needed any help to deal with anything”. Then Frank explained “Elisa used to have a nanny to take care of her and the domestic chores at home but when she was seven, nanny got sick and was unable to work. Since then Tara never bothered to find Elisa another nanny and so Elisa learnt to be independent really fast and was able to take care of herself with zero help from her working mom” and he elaborated “furthermore Tara’s job required her to make frequent travels to Chicago and so she was almost never home. Hence your mother pretty much left all the household chores to her ‘little housewife’. But I’m sure that that I need no further explanation about Elisa actually do. After all, you probably know how Elisa’s life was like” Maggie was surprised to learn how similar her sister’s life was to hers and she was even more surprised that Frank knew about it so she asked “how do you know all this?” “Your parents may be divorced but they are not as separated as you think” Frank replied in a mysterious tone and Maggie could not understand what Frank was trying to hint but she knew there is a problem.

Frank noticed the look of confusion on the face of Maggie so he explained “for a long period of time, your mother had been working as a legal advisor to your father. Neither you nor your sister knew about it but I do and I even got several chances to talk to them although there was a period of time whereby our friendship were really on the rock” “So all the while, my dad and mom have been seeing each other? And mom has been working for dad all this time?” Maggie replied. Frank answered “yes, she was his legal advisor” then Frank joked “did your mom offer your dad any other services other than legal services? I’m not really sure about that” and he added “but I’m sure of is that is nowhere your sister can go on her own”. This time Frank noticed the look of concern on the face of Maggie and he told her “Elisa and your mom just move from New York to Chicago recently and they haven’t bought a place to live in so they were staying in the hotel where your parents were killed in. But since your parents are killed and I don’t think Elisa has enough money to stay another night in that hotel” and he added “since your parents wished that you can be the legal guardian to your sister, why don’t you just let her move in with you?” “I am sure the apartment where you are co-habiting with your boyfriend can be good home for your younger sister provided you always remember to close your bedroom door” said Frank then he added “besides, any home would better than letting her sleep on the street.” Then Maggie went out of the questioning room to look for Elisa whereas Frank continued to have a conversation with the two attorneys.

Once out of the questioning room, Maggie realized that Elisa was not there then she looked out the window and saw Elisa on the street just below the police headquarter so she quickly entered the elevator and try to get to Elisa before she leaves. Not long later, Elisa got herself in a taxi and the driver took Elisa’s wheelchair, folded it and put it in the trunk of the car. “Elisa” Maggie called out to Elisa but Elisa was still mad at Maggie for how she reacted earlier and Elisa responded with a pout. “Elisa, where are you going?” Maggie asked Elisa. “Why, does it matter? After all you had stated very clear that you don’t want anything to do with me” Elisa answered in a displeased tone. “That’s not true, but if I made you feel that way then I’m sorry” Maggie replied then she explained “I was really stunned to have a sister out of the sudden and I was even more shocked that I was appointed to be your legal guardian. I really don’t think that I can take of anybody right now.” “I don’t need you to take care of me; I’m completely capable of taking care of myself” said Elisa and Maggie replied “I know, Chief told me about that. But where are you going to go when you don’t have a place to stay” Elisa did not answer and Maggie seized the opportunity and told her “I’m currently living with my boyfriend in a small two bedrooms apartment but we have an extra bedroom for you, why don’t you come and stay with us?” Elisa remained silent then Maggie told Elisa “since I was appointed as your legal guardian, you don’t really have much of a choice to comply” “Okay, but first I need to pack my belongings which is back at the hotel before I can go anywhere” Elisa replied and Maggie was elated by Elisa’s response and told her “so I’ll see you at the hotel after work”

After a long day of work, Toby returned home and noticed a stranger on a wheelchair in his home then he approached the stranger asked her “excuse Ma’am, who are you and what you doing here?” “Oh you must be Toby, I am Maggie’s sister” Elisa answered Toby with the greatest of eases. However Toby immediately responded skeptically by saying “lies, Maggie is an only child”. However before Elisa could even explain, Toby pulled out his police badge and flashed it in Elisa’s face then he told Elisa “let me warned that I am actually a police officer and lying to an officer wouldn’t do you any good. So I am to ask you again. Who are you?” “She is my sister” said Maggie as she came out of the kitchen. “But I thought you are only child” Toby replied and Maggie explained “I thought so too but it turned that my mother was actually pregnant then when she left my father. After my parents were officially divorced, my mom moved to New York City and gave birth there. Now both of my parents were killed and because of my sister is still under the legal age, I was appointed to be the legal guardian of my sister, Elisa.” “So she will be staying with us” Maggie added and Toby replied “no problem, after all we got an extra room to spare”. Soon after Maggie looked to Elisa and told her “let me show you to your room” and Maggie brought Elisa to the extra room in the apartment while Toby went into the kitchen to get a drink.

When Maggie and Elisa were in the room, Maggie started a conversation by saying “hope you had no hard feeling from the ungracious welcome that Toby given you earlier.” “Not at all” Elisa replied then Maggie told Elisa “sorry about how Toby actually tried to interrogate you earlier, it is just that he is a really serious police officer and he always ready jump into action and do what he know best.” “And you like that about him?” asked Elisa and Maggie replied “yeah.”  Suddenly Elisa remembered that Maggie was also a police officer so she curious and asked Maggie “why did you choose to be a police officer?” “Well it is because of Toby” said Maggie then she explained “Toby always wanted to be law enforcer since he was young when he lost his mother in a mafia-related homicide .The case soon turn cold and was never solved. Toby wanted to be a law enforcer and I just wanted to be with him so both he and I joined the police academy and became detectives.”  Then Elisa became curious about Maggie’s relationship with her boyfriend so as she asked Maggie “so how long did you two know each other?” “I knew him since college we have been dating for six years now” said Maggie. “So it is like any plans?” Elisa asked Maggie and Toby just happened to pass by the room and overhear what they were saying.

“What do you mean by plan?” Maggie asked Elisa. “Well you two been dating for a long time and you two are already staying with each other. And I bet you probably already slept with him. What you know what I meant by plans” Elisa replied and gave Maggie a very interesting look. Maggie was impressed by how right her sister was as Toby continued to stand by the door and listen in their conversation. “Toby has never really talked about marriage but I think we just need a little more time and he would come around” Maggie answered with some doubts. “I’m perfectly fine with waiting for Toby but there were times when I actually thought that I should propose” Maggie added and both Elisa and Toby was surprised. “I don’t that would be such smart move” said Elisa and Maggie replied “yeah I know, that why I still letting Toby take his time”. After hearing that Toby walked away feeling bad about himself. Toby felt really bad because even a teenager could see that his girlfriend really want to marry him but yet he was still unable to realize until he overheard their conversation.

Then Maggie changed the topic by asking Elisa “so I heard that you just moved into Chicago so how long have you been here?” “Less than a week” Elisa answered then she added “but my mom already got me enrolled a school here in Chicago” “How’s school?” Maggie asked Elisa then Elisa answered “I haven’t attended yet” “So how school like when you were in New York?” Maggie asked Elisa and Elisa replied “at first it was quite bad because I was the only disabled student in the entire school but then it turned out okay after a while” “Were you bullied because of your disabilities?” Maggie asked Elisa and Elisa answered “yes, a lot of actually. There is even this one time when a couple of boys thought it would be funny to dismember my wheelchair.” “Whoa what happen then?” said Maggie then Elisa replied “After mom received the call from my school about what happened, she flew all the way from Chicago back to New York City to come to my school and carried me home before getting me a new wheelchair.” “Wow, mom actually did that for you!” said Maggie in a surprised tone. “Even though it is really embarrassing for a fourteen year-old to have her mother carry her home from school while everyone at school watch, I really appreciate what mom did. Although she was always not around, somehow she was always there for me whenever I needed her” Elisa told Maggie.  Then Maggie realized that her mom was really a big part of Elisa and said “losing her now is probably a big blow to you” “Yes, but I guessed I will have to deal with like how I do with everything else” Elisa whimpered then Maggie out her arms around Elisa and embraced her. Being the older sister, Maggie knew that she had to be the pillar of emotional support for her younger sister.

Then there is a knock on the door and Toby went over to answer the door. He opened the door and realized that his commanding officer cum mentor was at the door. “Chief, what are you doing here?” Toby asked Frank and Frank replied “it is regarding the case”. “Can I come in?” Frank asked Toby and Toby answered “sure, come in”. After Frank entered the apartment, Maggie and Elisa came out of Elisa’s room then they noticed Frank and went over to him. “I go some new development for the case” said Frank and Maggie responded “so chief, what’s the new development?” “Well I was told that both Adam and Tara emptied their bank account prior to their death” said Frank then he added “I also found out that Adam had recently sold his home and if I’m not wrong, Tara also sold her apartment in New York City. So with the bank account emptied and their properties sold for cash, I am guessing that their death have something to do with the money.” “What make you so sure?” Maggie asked Frank and Frank replied “well we found eleven or twelve hundred-dollar notes at the scene of the crime. I believe that the murderer killed the both of them and made off with their money in a hurry but carelessly left behind those notes.” “So you think the motive was robbery” said Toby. “Not exactly, I believed the killer knew Adam and Tara and intended to extort them” Frank replied then he added “so that why Adam and Tara would empty their bank account and sold their homes but something went wrong and the killer killed both of them.” “But who would wanna extort dad, after his company failed last year, he was declared bankrupt and have not much money for himself” said Maggie and Frank replied “that why I need to question both you and your sister again.”

“Feel free to ask anything but I hope you don’t mind if I ask some questions?” said Elisa and Frank was surprised then he replied “what do you wanna know?” “Just how well do you our parents” Elisa asked Frank and he replied “well I knew both your parents since college and became quite close friend. In fact, I was both the best man and the maid of honor at your parents’ wedding because my then-girlfriend who was supposed to be Tara’s maid of honor was killed before the wedding day so I took her place.” “So why my mom would leave my dad when they already had a daughter?” Elisa asked Frank then she added “I know my mom and she would not leave her child behind whether she know if she was expecting another or not.” Frank turned away and said “how would I know what is the reason your parents separated?” “You’re lying” said Elisa then she added “you turned away before you answer meaning that you are obviously trying to hide something.” Toby and Maggie suddenly got interested and Maggie asked Frank “chief, you know the real reason why my parent separated?” “So what if I do?” Frank replied and Toby responded “so why would you tell us?” “You all don’t need to know” said Frank and Maggie replied “you’re not going to tell us.” “Nope” said Frank and Toby replied “but chief, maybe the reason why their parents split may help us solve the case and besides Maggie and Elisa deserved to know the real reason behind their parents split”. “Knowing the reason for their parent split will not help the case and Maggie and Elisa don’t need to know the reason for the split” Frank told them and Maggie replied “both me and Toby are police officer and we have the right to know.” “Fine, you win, but first I need Elisa to be out of the building” said Frank and he added “Maggie please take your sister out of the apartment and down to the ground floor while I talked to Toby.” “No way, we need to hear the truths” Maggie replied and Frank told Maggie “that was an direct order, rookie” Maggie knew she was defeated so she compiled but before she could pushed Elisa out of the living room , Elisa yelled “why won’t you tell us what is the reason”. Frank retorted “what if I tell you that you are the reason?” and then there was silence.
