Chapter 2: I’ll be alright.

18 year old Aki gripped her long costumes skirts and ran out of the document and permits office and down the street. It was a beautiful April day in Tokyo, the sun shining down on the grass that was still wet with traces of morning dew. Aki, however had no time to admire the warm weather. She clutched her bag and papers in one hand, her skirts in the other. Today was the day she finally traveled back in time to the year of 1492. Currently she was on her way to see Mr. Kaito, the only teacher of Aki’s to not yet sign her permission form.

I wish that they didn’t need all of your teachers signatures in order to time travel.” Aki thought to herself as she ran up to her English professor’s classroom.

“Mr. Kaito?” she asked, knocking in the door.

“Come in.” His deep voice said from inside. Aki pushed the door open with her shoulder and hurried inside.

“I’m leaving for 1492 today and I need you to sign my forms.” Mr. Kaito looked up at her.

“I’ve been over this before. I am not signing that form. That is the absolute final condition.” He folded his hands in his lap. Aki shook her head fervently.

“Sir, I have to go to the past. You know yourself that in college in order to have a history degree  you have to go back to the past twice. I have to go. Just sign the form.” Aki pushed it towards him.

“All of my other teachers have signed it. Please!” Mr. Kaito frowned.

“I have told you that you are too young! An 18 year old is not old enough to go to the past. I myself didn’t go until I was 27.” Aki put her head in her hands.

“I can’t wait until I’m 27 to go to the past! I have to go at least twice before I’m 22. Besides, I have taken all of the protections. I have immunity for every sickness, have learned 6 different languages, have learned how to do old Chinese dancing and writing, AND I am going under the name of Yoko, daughter of a highly regarded citizen. If you want you can watch me leave.” Aki stopped and waited for Mr. Kaito to say something. He didn’t but wordlessly signed the paper, pushing it back towards her.

“I can watch you go?” He asked. Aki nodded.

“Yes, and I’m sure that you will realize that I will be safe.”

“When do we leave?” Mr. Kaito asked. Aki smiled.

“Right now sir.” She answered, and gripped his hand and pulled him up and out of the classroom. The two half ran half walked down the main street and turned when they reached the lab. Inside the domed building was a short man wearing goggles and a lab coat that reached his ankles. The man waved at Aki as she rushed over to him. She shoved the papers at him and he flipped through them.

“Good. Everything seems to be in order” The man said. He pulled on a pair of gloves and removed a small metal device from a square box.

“This, is a machine that allows you to slip a whole in the space time continuum. Hit this button to indicate which year you will be going, and hit the button at the bottom when the coordinates are set. You will feel dizzy for about 3 minutes after traveling, so sit down for about that time when you arrive.” Aki eagerly took the machine. The man led her into a small clear box in the middle of the room surrounded by many tables and graphs. Aki stepped inside.

“Hit the button when we flash two green lights. Got it?” The man asked her. Aki grinned and nodded.

“Yes sir.” The man shut the door to the box and pulled his goggles over his eyes. He handed a pair to Mr. Kaito.

“Will she be completely safe?” Mr. Kaito asked, following the scientist, who said

“Absolutely, she has all of the necessary skills and has had the entirety of possible precautionary measures taken.” Mr. Kaito looked uneasy as he sat in the chair. The scientist flashed one green light and Aki grinned. She set the coordinates. Just before the second light flashed she mouthed,

“I’ll be alright.”
