I remember back in seventh grade everyone in my class was assigned to write a report on a successful person. She had us pick names out of a hat; I pulled out the name Harvey S.
Firestone. Who the hell is that? I had thought. That afternoon when I got home from school, I googled that Harvey S. Firestone. It turned out he was the man
that founded Firestone Tire and Rubber Co.I remember feeling disappointed that I had such a lame person to write a report on.My best friend, Dylan Carpenter, got Winston
Churchill.I was so jealous that she had someone interesting and famous and I just had some guy that founded a tire company.Although I was displeased, I went away to work on
my report. The day before we had to turn in our report, I still hadn't found a good beginning for my paper; quickly, I searched for a quote from Firestone.I didn't expect to
find anything inspiring; when I did, I was shocked."Never be bullied into silence.Never allow yourself to be made a victim.Accept no one's definition of your
life, but define yourself."
That quote opened my eyes.I had never been bullied, nor bullied anyone else.Subsequent to reading Firestone's quote, I vowed never to make anyone feel like that.I vowed never to become anyone's victim.
Right now, I wonder where that courage I had as a seventh-grader went.As a junior in high school, I let myself be Troy Thompson's victim.I let him silence me.I let him define my life.I let it happen since eighth grade.
Right now I sure could use mister Harvey S. Firestone.
