El Mercenario- Lone Wanderer by Trevor Porter

The whole town was awakened by a deafining gunshot. Citizens, armed with anything they could find, rushed to a cabin slighly isolated from the town. One innocent man smashed through the door and took a look around. When he returned outside, the only thing he could do was let out a faint cry and swear to the Gods. The rest of this small villiage began to do the same. One woman even took her own life in desperation. Inside the cabin, in a small studying room, was the body of Reverendo Domingo Martine, a true idol and preacher of this small town. There was a faint sound of a horse galloping somewhere beyond the hot desert before sunrise. The town was still left in misery.

\"And no one saw you?\" asked Rey Alvario before presenting a small peice of paper on a counter. \"No, Mister Alvario, I made it out the window just in time\" said the assassin before snatching the paper, which was actually a bank note. \"Ah, I see that you are anxious Mister.....\" said the town's leader, wondering what to call the assassin. \"Just call me Noche Cazador\" answered the assassin. \"Yes, Cazador, now I believe that you should head over to the bank and get some rest, but please come back soon as my empire must be protected!\" replied Alvario before letting out a short laugh. As Noche left the \"palace\" which was actually just a pretty decent house, he started to think his own thoughts. \"That man is loco, this is no empire, but his money is buena\" he thought to himself as he kissed the front of his note. As Noche entered the bank, everyone cleared the area for the \"hero\" of their \"empire\". Even the richest of townspeople gave Noche compliments as he cashed his check. \"Ah Mister Cazador! How buena it is to see you again!\" cheered the cashier, Pedro. \"Hello Pedro, I was paid again today\" announced Noche in a slightly cocky way before presenting his bank note. \"Wow.... five hundred pesos!\" shouted Pedro, \"Haha .......oh\" said Pedro again slightly looking down. \"Oh.....what's the problem?\" asked Noche Cazador beginning to look serious. \"It appears that Mister Alvario only has three hundred in his reserves. I am sorry Mister Cazador.\" responded Pedro. \"Well couldn't you just take the rest from his personal account?\" asked Noche wanting his money. \"I could but I need permission, so you should go ask\" explained Pedro. Noche left the bank note to Pedro and headed off to Alvario's home. When Noche opened the door he was blinded by the smoke from some strange herb. \"Rey Alvario?!\" shouted Noche. He did not get an answer so he decided to head to the bedroom. When Noche entered the room he found more of the blue smoke and a bottle of imported whiskey from North America. Noche could hear something creaking behind the cloud of smoke. When the smoke cleared, Noche found Rey Alvario with a prostituta, most likely bought with reserve money.

\"Mister Alvario, I noticed that you do not have all of the money to pay me\" said Noche in the most straight forward way. Alvario just mumbled and went back to \"business\". '' If it is fine with you, I can take the rest out of your regular account\" explained Noche. \"Ha! ......no\" slurred Alvario still occupied, \"Just get back to work you guard.\" \"You should know that I am not your personal guard Mister Alvario\" said Noche sternly. \"I am an assassin, a mercenario, and you must pay the fee.\" \"You do NOT tell me what I can and can't do\" shouted the Rey as he pulled out a short knife through the thick smoke. \"Ok,ok forget it\" said Noche calmly, just trying to avoid fighting the town's leader. \"Yeah,,,,we BETTER forget it!\" slurred Alvario again as he glared at Noche before he shut the door on him. Noche made his way back to the bank as quickly as possible still nervous from the confrontation. \"So what do you want to do?\" asked Pedro with the bank note.\"Just give me the reserves\" responded Noche before leaving out of town on his armored black stallion. Once he was out of town, Noche started to go slower and become more relaxed. All of the sudden he heard footsteps and a dog from somewhere. \"Oh it is probably that strange plant from Alvario's\" Noche thought to himself. As he traveled onward, the sound became more realistic. Noche was actually being followed. Noche turned around with his revolver pointing ahead and saw a man with vanilla white skin in a blue uniform with a leash that had a hunting dog. \"Who are you?! How did you find me?\" asked a paranoid Cazador. \"I am just a messenger. Alvario had me follow you with this\" the messenger said as he showed a peice of paper with a fingerprint out of blood on the bottom. Alvario had a policy about keeping blood marks on all of the common people. ''Oh, right'' said Noche calmy holstering his gun. \"What do you have for me?\" \"Alvario said that no matter where you are, he has eyes and ears everywhere across this land, and if you do anything to betray him, you will suffer\" explained the messenger. \"Is that so?\" asked Noche smiling a little. \"Well tell him if he attempts to kill me, his life will be hell.\" \"Well....alright then\" replied the messenger as he started to walk off. As the two groups parted ways, the messenger turned around. \"Oh by the way...\" started the messenger, \"I am some of those eyes and ears\" he said before pulling out a Winchester rifle. Noche, with quick reflexes, pulled out his six shooter and shot the messenger in the kneecap, crippling him. Noche looked as the false messenger begged for his life. Staring with cold dead eyes, Noche said \"I will let you live, now go spread the word\" before riding out into the distance.

As Noche went on he saw a small down up ahead. \"Hm this seems like a good rest stop.\" he thought to himself. So he went and tied his horse to a pole at a nearby saloon and went in. As he entered everyone glanced him but went back to their regular business. \"Hola senor.\" greeted the bartender with his large white moustache and beard shaking with every word, and his glass eye slowly moving to the side. \"What can I get you?\" \"Hola, I would like a glass of whiskey, any whiskey is buena right now\" replied Noche. \"Oh, need to forget something I see.\" said the bartender with sympathy, \"Here, on the house, you're new here.\" he said before presenting a small glass of the toasty brown whiskey. Noche neary downed the whole glass within seconds, the hot liquid slid down his throat with great force. Noche did this until his vision was slightly blurred and he couldn't even think of getting revenge. \" Hey....barkeep\" began Noche, \"is there a r....resting place near here?\" \"Why yes\" answered the bartender. \"Since you are still new to this town, go up the stairs and to the right\" replied the bartender presenting a brass key. \"It is the first one to the left after that.\" \"Oh, gracias sen....senorita.\" slurred Noche, mistaking the bartender for a woman at that point before walking to his room. Once Cazador entered his room he noticed that the room was slightly dirty and very old. \"Well, better than nothing.\" Cazador thought to himself before drifting off into a deep, drunken rest.

\"I'm telling you Ultima, he is too good for any of my soldiers.\" said Alvario with a little disbelief in his soldiers' skill. \"He is very quick, very cunning, and he has killed one of my best men out in the desert!\" exclaimed Alvario. \"You just need the right person for the right job.\" replied Ultima Visto admiring his own skill behind his black hat and his brown leather coat that covered his equpment. \"And I think that is you my amigo.\" replied Alvario with strong belief. \"I'll tell you what, if you can kill this son of a ****, then you can even take my seat in this town. You kill him, and this town is yours.\" \"Heh...sounds like a deal.\" said Ultima before shaking Alvario's hand, while still hiding his face and body. \"Ok then, start out going west.\" said Alvario, \"That is where the body of my soldier was found, it seemed that he tried to retreat, but he did not go far before dying. He was only shot in the knee, so he must have died on the way back with no support\" informed Alvario.

Ultima headed off west until he saw the town up ahead. \"Hm, he must have stopped here once, I should probably ask around\" Ultima said to himself before riding out.
